5D gravitational waves from complexified black rings
In this paper we construct and briefly study the 5D time-dependent solutions
of general relativity obtained via double analytic continuation of the black
hole (Myers-Perry) and of the black ring solutions with a double
(Pomeransky-Senkov) and a single rotation (Emparan-Reall). The new solutions
take the form of a generalized Einstein-Rosen cosmology representing
gravitational waves propagating in a closed universe. In this context the
rotation parameters of the rings can be interpreted as the extra wave
polarizations, while it is interesting to state that the waves obtained from
Myers-Perry Black holes exhibit an extra boost-rotational symmetry in higher
dimensions which signals their better behavior at null infinity. The analogue

Quantifying Privacy: A Novel Entropy-Based Measure of Disclosure Risk
It is well recognised that data mining and statistical analysis pose a
serious treat to privacy. This is true for financial, medical, criminal and
marketing research. Numerous techniques have been proposed to protect privacy,
including restriction and data modification. Recently proposed privacy models
such as differential privacy and k-anonymity received a lot of attention and
for the latter there are now several improvements of the original scheme, each
removing some security shortcomings of the previous one. However, the challenge
lies in evaluating and comparing privacy provided by various techniques. In
this paper we propose a novel entropy based security measure that can be
applied to any generalisation, restriction or data modification technique. We
use our measure to empirically evaluate and compare a few popular methods,
namely query restriction, sampling and noise addition.Comment: 20 pages, 4 figure
Divergent responses of permafrost peatlands to recent climate change
Permafrost peatlands are found in high-latitude regions and store globally-important amounts of soil organic carbon. These regions are warming at over twice the global average rate, causing permafrost thaw, and exposing previously inert carbon to decomposition and emission to the atmosphere as greenhouse gases. However, it is unclear how peatland hydrological behaviour, vegetation structure and carbon balance, and the linkages between them, will respond to permafrost thaw in a warming climate. Here we show that permafrost peatlands follow divergent ecohydrological trajectories in response to recent climate change within the same rapidly warming region (northern Sweden). Whether a site becomes wetter or drier depends on local factors and the autogenic response of individual peatlands. We find that bryophyte-dominated vegetation demonstrates resistance, and in some cases resilience, to climatic and hydrological shifts. Drying at four sites is clearly associated with reduced carbon sequestration, while no clear relationship at wetting sites is observed. We highlight the complex dynamics of permafrost peatlands and warn against an overly-simple approach when considering their ecohydrological trajectories and role as C sinks under a warming climate

FUMEPOC: Early detection of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in smokers
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Currently is not feasible using conventional spirometry as a screening method in Primary Care especially among smoking population to detect chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in early stages. Therefore, the FUMEPOC study protocol intends to analyze the validity and reliability of Vitalograph COPD-6 spirometer as simpler tool to aid screening and diagnosis of this disease in early stages in primary care surgery.</p> <p>Methods / Design</p> <p>Study design: An observational, descriptive study of diagnostic tests, undertaken in Primary Care and Pneumology Outpatient Care Centre at San Juan Hospital and Elda Hospital. All smokers attending the primary care surgery and consent to participate in the study will undergo a test with Vitalograph COPD-6 spirometer. Subsequently, a conventional spirometry will be performed in the hospital and the results will be compared with those of the Vitalograph COPD-6 test.</p> <p>Discussion</p> <p>It is difficult to use the spirometry as screening for early diagnose test in real conditions of primary care clinical practice. The use of a simpler tool, Vitalograph COPD-6 spirometer, can help in the early diagnose and therefore, it could improve the clinical management of the disease.</p

Effects of mannoprotein E1 in liquid diet on inflammatory response and TLR5 expression in the gut of rats infected by Salmonella typhimurium
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Mannoproteins are yeast cell wall componend, and rich in mannose. The use of foods rich in mannose as carbohydrate, could have a bioprotective effect against entrobacteria intestinal infection. Nothing is known about mannoproteins' activity in inflammatory bowel processes induced by entrobacteria.</p> <p>This study investigates the effects of mannoprotein administration via a liquid diet on inflammatory response and TLR5 expression during intestinal tissue injury in a rat model of infection with <it>Salmonella typhimurium</it>.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Adult Wistar male rats were divided into three groups: control, and mannoprotein E<sub>1 </sub>at 10 or 15%. Animals were fed with a liquid diet supplemented or not with mannoprotein E<sub>1</sub>. Groups were infected by intragastrical administration of <it>S. typhimurium</it>. 24 h post-inoculation samples of spleen, ileum and liver were collected for microbiological studies. Gut samples were processed to determine levels of proinflammatory cytokines (mRNA) and TLR5 (mRNA and protein) by quantitative PCR and Western-blot, and the number of proliferative and apoptotic cells determined by immunohistochemistry.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Ininfected levels of proinflammatory cytokines and TLR5 were higher in untreated controls than in the animals receiving mannoprotein. Proliferation was similar in both groups, whereas apoptosis was higher in controls. Curiosly, the mannoprotein effect was dose dependent.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Mannoprotein administration in a liquid diet seems to protect intestinal tissue against <it>S. typhimurium </it>infection. This protection seems to expressed as a lower pro-inflammatory response and TLR5 downregulation in gut epithelium, as well as by an inhibition of apoptosis. Nevertheless, the molecular mechanism by which mannoprotein is able to regulate these responses remain unclear. These results could open up new avenues in the use of mannoproteins as prebiotics in the therapeutic strategy for treatment of inflammatory gut processes induced by microbia.</p

Impact of phenolic-rich olive leaf extract on blood pressure, plasma lipids and inflammatory markers: a randomised controlled trial
Purpose
Dietary polyphenols have been demonstrated to favourably modify a number of cardiovascular risk markers such as blood pressure (BP), endothelial function and plasma lipids. We conducted a randomised, double-blind, controlled, crossover trial to investigate the effects of a phenolic-rich olive leaf extract (OLE) on BP and a number of associated vascular and metabolic measures.
Methods
A total of 60 pre-hypertensive [systolic blood pressure (SBP): 121â140 mmHg; diastolic blood pressure (DBP): 81â90 mmHg] males [mean age 45 (±SD 12.7 years, BMI 26.7 (±3.21) kg/m2] consumed either OLE (136 mg oleuropein; 6 mg hydroxytyrosol) or a polyphenol-free control daily for 6 weeks before switching to the alternate arm after a 4-week washout.
Results
Daytime [â3.95 (±SD 11.48) mmHg, p = 0.027] and 24-h SBP [â3.33 (±SD 10.81) mmHg, p = 0.045] and daytime and 24-h DBP [â3.00 (±SD 8.54) mmHg, p = 0.025; â2.42 (±SD 7.61) mmHg, p = 0.039] were all significantly lower following OLE intake, relative to the control. Reductions in plasma total cholesterol [â0.32 (±SD 0.70) mmol/L, p = 0.002], LDL cholesterol [â0.19 (±SD 0.56) mmol/L, p = 0.017] and triglycerides [â0.18 (±SD 0.48), p = 0.008] were also induced by OLE compared to control, whilst a reduction in interleukin-8 [â0.63 (±SD 1.13) pg/ml; p = 0.026] was also detected. Other markers of inflammation, vascular function and glucose metabolism were not affected.
Conclusion
Our data support previous research, suggesting that OLE intake engenders hypotensive and lipid-lowering effects in vivo
