    A computerized analysis of the entire retinal ganglion cell population and its spatial distribution in adult rats

    AbstractIn adult albino (SD) and pigmented (PVG) rats the entire population of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) was quantified and their spatial distribution analyzed using a computerized technique. RGCs were back-labelled from the optic nerves (ON) or the superior colliculi (SCi) with Fluorogold (FG). Numbers of RGCs labelled from the ON [SD: 82,818±3,949, n=27; PVG: 89,241±3,576, n=6) were comparable to those labelled from the SCi [SD: 81,486±4,340, n=37; PVG: 87,229±3,199; n=59].     Hadronic B Decays Involving Even Parity Charmed Mesons

    Hadronic B decays containing an parity-even charmed meson in the final state are studied. Specifically we focus on the Cabibbo-allowed decays BˉDπ(ρ),DDˉs(),DˉsD()\bar B\to D^{**} \pi(\rho), D^{**}\bar D_s^{(*)}, \bar D^{**}_sD^{(*)} and BˉsDsπ(ρ)\bar B_s\to D_s^{**}\pi(\rho), where DD^{**} denotes generically a p-wave charmed meson. The BDB\to D^{**} transition form factors are studied in the improved version of the Isgur-Scora-Grinstein-Wise quark model. We apply heavy quark effective theory and chiral symmetry to study the strong decays of p-wave charmed mesons and determine the magnitude of the D11/2D13/2D_1^{1/2}-D_1^{3/2} mixing angle. Except the decay to D1(2427)0πD_1(2427)^0\pi^- the predictions for BD0πB^-\to D^{**0}\pi^- agree with experiment. The sign of D11/2D13/2D_1^{1/2}-D_1^{3/2} mixing angle is found to be positive in order to avoid a severe suppression on the production of D1(2427)0πD_1(2427)^0\pi^-. The interference between color-allowed and color-suppressed tree amplitudes is expected to be destructive in the decay BD1(2427)0πB^-\to D_1(2427)^0\pi^-. Hence, an observation of the ratio D1(2427)0π/D1(2427)+πD_1(2427)^0\pi^-/D_1(2427)^+\pi^- can be used to test the relative signs of various form factors as implied by heavy quark symmetry. Although the predicted BD1(2420)0ρB^-\to D_1(2420)^0\rho^- at the level of 3×1033\times 10^{-3} exceeds the present upper limit, it leads to the ratio D1(2420)ρ/D1(2420)π2.6D_1(2420)\rho^-/D_1(2420)\pi^-\approx 2.6 as expected from the factorization approach and from the ratio fρ/fπ1.6f_\rho/f_\pi\approx 1.6 . Therefore, it is crucial to have a measurement of this mode to test the factorization hypothesis. For BˉDˉsD\bar B\to \bar D_s^{**}D decays, it is expected that \bar D_{s0}^*D\gsim \bar D_{s1}D as the decay constants of the multiplet (Ds0,Ds1)(D_{s0}^*,D_{s1}) become the same in the heavy quark limit.Comment: 27 pages, Belle's new data on DD_s^{**} productions in B decays and on the radiative decay D_{s1}-> D_s\gamma are updated and discussed.     Diffusive transport and self-consistent dynamics in coupled maps

    The study of diffusion in Hamiltonian systems has been a problem of interest for a number of years. In this paper we explore the influence of self-consistency on the diffusion properties of systems described by coupled symplectic maps. Self-consistency, i.e. the back-influence of the transported quantity on the velocity field of the driving flow, despite of its critical importance, is usually overlooked in the description of realistic systems, for example in plasma physics. We propose a class of self-consistent models consisting of an ensemble of maps globally coupled through a mean field. Depending on the kind of coupling, two different general types of self-consistent maps are considered: maps coupled to the field only through the phase, and fully coupled maps, i.e. through the phase and the amplitude of the external field. The analogies and differences of the diffusion properties of these two kinds of maps are discussed in detail.Comment: 13 pages, 14 figure

    Results from MAGIC's first observation cycle on galactic sources

    During its Cycle I, the MAGIC telescope targeted about 250 hours several galactic sources sought to be, or detected previously by other experiments in the same energy domain, gamma-ray emitters. This paper reviews some results of such MAGIC observations covering, among others, supernova remnants, the Galactic Center and microquasars.     Variation in antiosteoporotic drug prescribing and spending across Spain. A population-based ecological cross-sectional study

    Introduction: Evidence has shown that utilization of antiosteoporotic medications does not correspond with risk, and studies on other therapies have shown that adequacy of pharmaceutical prescribing might vary between regions. Nevertheless, very few studies have addressed the variability in osteoporotic drug consumption. We aimed to describe variations in pharmaceutical utilization and spending on osteoporotic drugs between Health Areas (HA) in Spain. Methods: Population-based cross-sectional ecological study of expenditure and utilization of the five therapeutic groups marketed for osteoporosis treatment in Spain in 2009. Small area variation analysis (SAVA) methods were used. The units of analysis were the 168 HA of 13 Spanish regions, including 7.2 million women aged 50 years and older. The main outcomes were the defined daily dose (DDD) per 1000 inhabitants and day (DDD/1000/Day) dispensed according to the pharmaceutical claims reimbursed, and the expenditure on antiosteoporotics at retail price per woman =50 years old and per year. Results: The average osteoporosis drug consumption was 116.8 DDD/1000W/Day, ranging from 78.5 to 158.7 DDD/1000W/Day between the HAs in the 5th and 95th percentiles. Seventy-five percent of the antiosteoporotics consumed was bisphosphonates, followed by raloxifene, strontium ranelate, calcitonins, and parathyroid hormones including teriparatide. Regarding variability by therapeutic groups, biphosphonates showed the lowest variation, while calcitonins and parathyroid hormones showed the highest variation. The annual expenditure on antiosteoporotics was €426.5 million, translating into an expenditure of €59.2 for each woman =50 years old and varying between €38.1 and €83.3 between HAs in the 5th and 95th percentiles. Biphosphonates, despite accounting for 79% of utilization, only represented 63% of total expenditure, while parathyroid hormones with only 1.6% of utilization accounted for 15% of the pharmaceutical spending. Conclusion: This study highlights a marked geographical variation in the prescription of antiosteoporotics, being more pronounced in the case of costly drugs such as parathyroid hormones. The differences in rates of prescribing explained almost all of the variance in drug spending, suggesting that the difference in prescription volume between territories, and not the price of the drugs, is the main source of variation in this setting. Data on geographical variation of prescription can help guide policy proposals for targeting areas with inadequate antiosteoporotic drug use

    Multiwavelength studies of MHD waves in the solar chromosphere: An overview of recent results

    The chromosphere is a thin layer of the solar atmosphere that bridges the relatively cool photosphere and the intensely heated transition region and corona. Compressible and incompressible waves propagating through the chromosphere can supply significant amounts of energy to the interface region and corona. In recent years an abundance of high-resolution observations from state-of-the-art facilities have provided new and exciting ways of disentangling the characteristics of oscillatory phenomena propagating through the dynamic chromosphere. Coupled with rapid advancements in magnetohydrodynamic wave theory, we are now in an ideal position to thoroughly investigate the role waves play in supplying energy to sustain chromospheric and coronal heating. Here, we review the recent progress made in characterising, categorising and interpreting oscillations manifesting in the solar chromosphere, with an impetus placed on their intrinsic energetics.Comment: 48 pages, 25 figures, accepted into Space Science Review
