A methodology for monitoring the behaviour and size of sand after a beach nourishment process is presented herein. Four sampling campaigns (before and just after the nourishment, after six months and one year later) were performed on four beaches of the Gulf of Cadiz (Spain). D50 and sorting size parameters were analysed. Among the results, it should be noted that differences of up to 20% between native and nourished sand values disappear only one year after the nourishment

Use of the ANKI Software in Coastal Engineering Courses: Methodology and Results

    Get PDF
Many people believe that engineering subjects require only mathematical and physical abilities as well as space perception. However, some aspects of the syllabus, must be memorized to achieve optimal academic results. The pandemic situation has meant a reduction in face-to-face classes, which has made it difficult to highlight (through repetition by teachers) those concepts that must be learnt by heart due to their importance. As is well known, the Notecard Question and Answer Technique (NQAT, based on Leitner’s system) helps students to learn those important ideas that must be kept in the long term memory to remember when needed. Therefore, an educational project is presented here that contemplates the creation of a database of question-answer cards to facilitate the memorization of concepts, formulas and key values of different parameters essential for understanding coastal engineering problems. The methodology was experimented in different courses, related to Coastal and Port Engineering. These courses are included in the third year of the Marine Sciences and Civil Engineering Bachelor degrees as well as in the MSc degree in the University of Cadiz. The program chosen was the ANKI, of broad application, easy to use and free to access. As a collateral advantage, students became familiar with this software and were able to use it in other subjects. Through a selective distribution of the different topics, all the students participated in the task of preparing the cards. Their use was encouraged by a series of online tests and a “supplementary bonus” to the final examination. The results obtained between the current course (with flash cards) and the previous one (without flash cards) did not show any substantial change in the number of students who pass the subject. However, students reported that it took less time to memorize formulations and key concepts

Audiovisual Resources in Laboratory Practices for Hydraulic Engineering

    Get PDF
During the laboratory practices of a subject, students write all the data, methodology, development and final results for later study at home. When a certain period of time passes since the essay was carried out, there are details that many of the students forget. They do not relate the methodology and development with the laboratory equipment used. The use of audiovisual resources can help students to better study the practical part of the subject. The new teaching resources will be applied in a block of the Hydraulics subject, which is included in the second year of the degree in Civil Engineering, at the Algeciras School of Engineering and Technology. The subject has a theoretical-practical part and another of laboratory practices. The course is divided into three blocks: Hydrostatics, Hydrokinematics and Hydrodynamics. The article will focus on the improvement of the teaching resources of the part of the laboratory practices, of the hydrostatics block. Audio-visual resources will consist of explanatory videos with the development of laboratory practices. The videos show for each of the tests the initial data, the methodology to be applied and the development of the practice. These videos help students to reinforce the knowledge acquired in the laboratory. In addition, the use of these resources helps Erasmus students (for language reasons) to understand the practices. Additionally, the generated material can be used as a resource in the case of non-face-toface practices (as in previous courses due to the Covid-19 pandemic). For the implementation of this initiative, a teaching innovation project has been developed. Eventually, the students show a great interest in the virtualization of the laboratory practices and a high degree of satisfaction with the available videos. Moreover, their academic results improved slightly with this new methodology

Effects of saline reclaimed waters and deficit irrigation on Citrus physiology assessed by UAV remote sensing

The aim of our research was to discover the effects of the long-term irrigation with saline reclaimed (RW) and transfer (TW) water and different irrigation strategies: control (C) and regulated deficit irrigation (RDI) on yield and fruit quality of grapefruit at harvest and during cold storage. TW-RDI treatment decreased tree canopy (TC) and crop load, resulting in a 21% reduction of fruit yield. Regarding fruit quality, RW notably decreased peel thickness at harvest (about 8%); however, this difference was not remained during cold storage. Sugar/acid ratio was mainly increased by RDI, but also by RW, due to an important increase in soluble solid content (11% of average value for TW-RDI, RW-C and RW-RDI). In addition, RDI combined with RW, significantly increased the number of fruits in small category 5 at the end of cold storage. Finally, neither ratio yield/TC nor irrigation water productivity were affected by any irrigation treatments. This study was supported by two CICYT (AGL2010-17553 and AGL2013-49047-C2-482 515 2-R) projects and SIRRIMED (KBBE-2009-1- 2-03, PROPOSAL N◦245159) 483 project. Detection of very high energy radiation from the BL lacertae object PG 1553+113 with the MAGIC telescope

    Get PDF
In 2005 and 2006, the MAGIC telescope observed very high energy gamma-ray emission from the distant BL Lac object PG 1553 + 113. The overall significance of the signal was 8.8 sigma for 18.8 hr of observation time. The light curve shows no significant flux variations on a daily timescale; the flux level during 2005 was, however, significantly higher compared to 2006. The differential energy spectrum between similar to 90 and 500 GeV is well described by a power law with photon index. Gamma = 4.2 +/- 0.3. The combined 2005 and 2006 energy spectrum provides an upper limit of z = 0.74 on the redshift of the object

MAGIC observations of PG 1553+113 during a multiwavelength campaign in July 2006

    Get PDF
The active galactic nucleus PG1553+113 was observed by the MAGIC telescope in July 2006 during a multiwavelength campaign, in which telescopes in the optical, X-ray, and very high energies participated. Although the MAGIC data were affected by strong atmospheric absorption (calima), they were analyzed after applying a correction. In 8.5 h, a signal was detected with a significance of 5.0 sigma. The integral flux above 150 GeV was (2.6 +/- 0.9) x 10(-7) ph s(-1) m(-2). By fitting the differential energy spectrum with a power law, a spectral index of -4.1 +/- 0.3 was obtained

Very high energy gamma-ray radiation from the stellar mass black hole binary Cygnus X-1

We report on the results from the observations in the very high energy band ( VHE; GeV) of the black E = 100 g hole X- ray binary ( BHXB) Cygnus X- 1. The observations were performed with the MAGIC telescope, for a total of 40 hr during 26 nights, spanning the period between 2006 June and November. Searches for steady gamma - ray signals yielded no positive result, and upper limits to the integral flux ranging between 1% and 2% of the Crab Nebula flux, depending on the energy, have been established. We also analyzed each observation night independently, obtaining evidence of gamma- ray signals at the 4.0 j significance level ( 3.2 j after trial correction) for 154 minutes of effective on- time ( EOT) on September 24 between 20: 58 and 23: 41 UTC, coinciding with an X- ray flare seen by RXTE, Swift, and INTEGRAL. A search for faster- varying signals within a night resulted in an excess with a significance of 4.9 j ( 4.1 j after trial correction) for 79 minutes EOT between 22: 17 and 23: 41 UTC. The measured excess is compatible with a pointlike source at the position of Cygnus X- 1 and excludes the nearby radio nebula powered by its relativistic jet. The differential energy spectrum is well fitted by an unbroken power law described as dN/(dA dt dE) = ( 2.3 +/- 0.6)* 10 ( E/1TeV). This is the first experimental evidence of VHE emission from a stellar mass black hole and therefore from a confirmed accreting X- ray binary

A combined rock-magnetic and paleomagnetic researches were carried out on some pyroclastic rocks and pre-Columbian pottery fragments associated to the Colima Volcanic Complex. A full battery of magnetic measurements was performed in order to estimate magnetic mineralogy and to determine both the directions and absolute intensities of the characteristic remanent magnetization. In this paper we report absolute age determination using magnetic dating for two volcanic eruptions associated to the Colima volcano (Volcán de Fuego). The geomagnetic field prediction model SHA.DIF.14K, based on full vector (declination, inclination and absolute paleointensity), was used for first time in pyroclastic flows deposits and intercalated potteries. The results obtained agree reasonably well with available radiometric (C14) data, them provide a more accurate age determination of the cooling moment for the lava flows.
