A Micro Molecular Bipolar Outflow From HL Tau
We present detailed geometry and kinematics of the inner outflow toward HL
Tau observed using Near Infrared Integral Field Spectograph (NIFS) at the
Gemini-North 8-m Observatory. We analyzed H2 2.122 um emission and [Fe II]
1.644 um line emission as well as the adjacent continuum observed at a <0".2
resolution. The H2 emission shows (1) a bubble-like geometry to the northeast
of the star, as briefly reported in the previous paper, and (2) faint emission
in the southwest counterflow, which has been revealed through careful analysis.
The emission on both sides of the star show an arc 1".0 away from the star,
exhibiting a bipolar symmetry. Different brightness and morphologies in the
northeast and southwest flows are attributed to absorption and obscuration of
the latter by a flattened envelope and a circumstellar disk. The H2 emission
shows a remarkably different morphology from the collimated jet seen in [Fe II]
emission. The positions of some features coincide with scattering continuum,
indicating that these are associated with cavities in the dusty envelope. Such
properties are similar to millimeter CO outflows, although the spatial scale of
the H2 outflow in our image (~150 AU) is strikingly smaller than the mm
outflows, which often extend over 1000-10000 AU scales. The position-velocity
diagram of the H2 and [Fe II] emission do not show any evidence for kinematic
interaction between these flows. All results described above support the
scenario that the jet is surrounded by an unseen wide-angled wind, which
interacts with the ambient gas and produce the bipolar cavity and shocked H2

Electrophysiological Guidance of Epidural Electrode Array Implantation over the Human Lumbosacral Spinal Cord to Enable Motor Function after Chronic Paralysis.
Epidural electrical stimulation (EES) of the spinal cord has been shown to restore function after spinal cord injury (SCI). Characterization of EES-evoked motor responses has provided a basic understanding of spinal sensorimotor network activity related to EES-enabled motor activity of the lower extremities. However, the use of EES-evoked motor responses to guide EES system implantation over the spinal cord and their relation to post-operative EES-enabled function in humans with chronic paralysis attributed to SCI has yet to be described. Herein, we describe the surgical and intraoperative electrophysiological approach used, followed by initial EES-enabled results observed in 2 human subjects with motor complete paralysis who were enrolled in a clinical trial investigating the use of EES to enable motor functions after SCI. The 16-contact electrode array was initially positioned under fluoroscopic guidance. Then, EES-evoked motor responses were recorded from select leg muscles and displayed in real time to determine electrode array proximity to spinal cord regions associated with motor activity of the lower extremities. Acceptable array positioning was determined based on achievement of selective proximal or distal leg muscle activity, as well as bilateral muscle activation. Motor response latencies were not significantly different between intraoperative recordings and post-operative recordings, indicating that array positioning remained stable. Additionally, EES enabled intentional control of step-like activity in both subjects within the first 5 days of testing. These results suggest that the use of EES-evoked motor responses may guide intraoperative positioning of epidural electrodes to target spinal cord circuitry to enable motor functions after SCI
Probing the Central Regions of Nearby Compact Elliptical Galaxies
K-band spectroscopic observations recorded with NIFS+ALTAIR on Gemini North
are used to probe the central arcsec of the compact elliptical galaxies NGC
4486B, NGC 5846A, and M32. The angular resolution of these data is ~0.1 arcsec
FWHM. The central stellar contents of NGC 4486B and NGC 5846A are similar, in
the sense that they occupy the same regions of the (Ca I, 12CO), (Na I, 12CO)
and (13CO, 12CO) diagrams. The NGC 4486B and NGC 5846A observations depart from
the sequence defined by solar neighborhood giants in the (Na I, 12CO) diagram,
in a sense that is consistent with both galaxies having non-solar chemical
mixtures. For comparison, the M32 data is consistent with a chemical enrichment
history like that in the Galactic disk; M32 could not have formed from the
stripping of a larger elliptical galaxy. The behaviour of the near-infrared
line indices as a function of radius is also investigated. The radial gradients
that are present in NGC 4486B and NGC 5846A at large radii break down or
reverse within the central few tenths of an arcsec. Evidence is presented that
the nuclear regions of NGC 4486B and NGC 5846A harbour intermediate age

Probing the Early Stages of Low-Mass Star Formation in LDN 1689N: Dust and Water in IRAS 16293-2422A, B, and E
We present deep images of dust continuum emission at 450, 800, and 850 micron
of the dark cloud LDN 1689N which harbors the low-mass young stellar objects
(YSOs) IRAS 16293-2422A and B (I16293A and I16293B) and the cold prestellar
object I16293E. Toward the positions of I16293A and E we also obtained spectra
of CO-isotopomers and deep submillimeter observations of chemically related
molecules with high critical densities. To I16293A we report the detection of
the HDO 1_01 - 0_00 and H2O 1_10 - 1_01 ground-state transitions as broad
self-reversed emission profiles with narrow absorption, and a tentative
detection of H2D+ 1_10 - 1_11. To I16293E we detect weak emission of
subthermally excited HDO 1_01 - 0_00. Based on this set of submillimeter
continuum and line data we model the envelopes around I16293A and E. The
density and velocity structure of I16293A is fit by an inside-out collapse
model, yielding a sound speed of a=0.7 km/s, an age of t=(0.6--2.5)e4 yr, and a
mass of 6.1 Msun. The density in the envelope of I16293E is fit by a radial
power law with index -1.0+/-0.2, a mass of 4.4 Msun, and a constant temperature
of 16K. These respective models are used to study the chemistry of the
envelopes of these pre- and protostellar objects.
The [HDO]/[H2O] abundance ratio in the warm inner envelope of I16293A of a
few times 1e-4 is comparable to that measured in comets. This supports the idea
that the [HDO]/[H2O] ratio is determined in the cold prestellar core phase and

The NOD2-Smoking Interaction in Crohn's Disease is likely Specific to the 1007fs Mutation and may be Explained by Age at Diagnosis:A Meta-Analysis and Case-Only Study
Background: NOD2 and smoking are risk factors for Crohn's disease. We meta-analyzed NOD2-smoking interactions in Crohn's disease (Phase 1), then explored the effect of age at diagnosis on NOD2-smoking interactions (Phase 2).
Methods: Phase 1: MEDLINE and EMBASE were searched for studies (n = 18) providing data on NOD2 and smoking in Crohn's disease. NOD2-smoking interactions were estimated using odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) calculated using random effects models. Phase 2: A case-only study compared the proportion of smokers and carriers of the 1007 fs variant across ages at diagnosis (≤16, 17–40, >40 years).
Findings: Phase 1: Having ever smoked was less common among carriers of the 1007 fs variant of NOD2 (OR 0.74, 95%CI:0.66–0.83). There was no interaction between smoking and the G908R (OR 0.96, 95%CI:0.82–1.13) or the R702W variant (OR 0.89, 95%CI:0.76–1.05). Phase 2: The proportion of patients (n = 627) carrying the 1007 fs variant decreased with age at diagnosis (≤16 years: 15%; 17–40: 12%; >40: 3%; p = 0.003). Smoking was more common in older patients (≤16 years: 4%; 17–40: 48%; >40: 71%; p < 0.001).
Interpretation: The negative NOD2-smoking interaction in Crohn's disease is specific to the 1007Â fs variant. However, opposing rates of this variant and smoking across age at diagnosis may explain this negative interaction
Gemini Observations of Disks and Jets in Young Stellar Objects and in Active Galaxies
We present first results from the Near-infrared Integral Field Spectrograph
(NIFS) located at Gemini North. For the active galaxies Cygnus A and Perseus A
we observe rotationally-supported accretion disks and adduce the existence of
massive central black holes and estimate their masses. In Cygnus A we also see
remarkable high-excitation ionization cones dominated by photoionization from
the central engine. In the T-Tauri stars HV Tau C and DG Tau we see
highly-collimated bipolar outflows in the [Fe II] 1.644 micron line, surrounded
by a slower molecular bipolar outflow seen in the H_2 lines, in accordance with

Stochastic Resonance in Ion Channels Characterized by Information Theory
We identify a unifying measure for stochastic resonance (SR) in voltage
dependent ion channels which comprises periodic (conventional), aperiodic and
nonstationary SR. Within a simplest setting, the gating dynamics is governed by
two-state conductance fluctuations, which switch at random time points between
two values. The corresponding continuous time point process is analyzed by
virtue of information theory. In pursuing this goal we evaluate for our
dynamics the tau-information, the mutual information and the rate of
information gain. As a main result we find an analytical formula for the rate
of information gain that solely involves the probability of the two channel
states and their noise averaged rates. For small voltage signals it simplifies
to a handy expression. Our findings are applied to study SR in a potassium
channel. We find that SR occurs only when the closed state is predominantly
dwelled. Upon increasing the probability for the open channel state the
application of an extra dose of noise monotonically deteriorates the rate of

Comparison of Technetium-99m-MIBI imaging with MRI for detection of spine involvement in patients with multiple myeloma
BACKGROUND: Recently, radiopharmaceutical scanning with Tc-99m-MIBI was reported to depict areas with active bone disease in multiple myeloma (MM) with both high sensitivity and specificity. This observation was explained by the uptake of Tc-99m-MIBI by neoplastic cells. The present investigation evaluates whether Tc-99m-MIBI imaging and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) perform equally well in detecting myelomatous bone marrow lesions. METHODS: In 21 patients with MM, MRIs of the vertebral region TH12 to S1 and whole body scans with Tc-99m-MIBI were done. RESULTS: Tc-99m-MIBI scanning missed bone marrow infiltration in 43 of 87 vertebrae (50.5%) in which MRI showed neoplastic bone marrow involvement. In patients with disease stage I+II, Tc-99m-MIBI scanning was negative in all of 24 vertebrae infiltrated according to MRI. In patients with disease stage III, Tc-99m-MIBI scanning detected 44 of 63 (70%) vertebrae involved by neoplastic disease. CONCLUSION: Tc-99m-MIBI scanning underestimated the extent of myelomatous bone marrow infiltration in the spine, especially in patients with low disease stage
