SWORDS AND THE CITY: SOCIAL FUNERARY ARCHAEOLOGY AND THE DISAPPEARANCE OF THE “WARRIOR GRAVE” IN 8th c. BCE ATHENS
Swords and other weapons had been placed into Athenian graves for over 700 years when thepractice was abandoned in the late 8th century BCE. The Greek world during this periodwitnessed several dramatic shifts in political, economic, and cultural realities from centralizedMycenaean authority to the “Bronze Age Collapse”, and four centuries of fragmentation andpopulation decline followed by an unprecedented explosion of literacy, art, and geographicalexpansion in the 8th century. How is it that these so-called “warrior graves” were a persistentfeature of such a dynamic cultural landscape? And if the practice was so persistent throughoutchanging cultural circumstances, why was it finally abandoned? Through a comprehensiveliterature review, this paper recontextualizes swords as bearers of meaning that, when used infunerary contexts from ca.1450-720 BCE, co-constituted Athenian communities’ social realities.Synthesizing and following work in social funerary archaeology and theorizations ofentanglement, this paper argues that burials with swords ceased in late 8th century Athensbecause power was no longer attached to elaborate funerals incorporating swords as multitudesof new objects were being made and traded, and political and religious institutions opened upnovel arenas for display and competition. This case study illustrates that the transformation andrecasting of time-honored traditions is part of the complexity of living culture, and does notreflect loss of authenticity or corruption of heritage. These insights are relevant to the fiercecontemporary debates surrounding decolonization of the political, economic, and academicinstitutions that shape public discourse and policy
Dužinsko-maseni odnos crvenoperke Rutilus rutilus (Linnaeus, 1758) u jezeru Volvi (sjeverna Grčka)
Length-weight relations (LWRs) and different indices of condition factor for roach from Lake Volvi (Northern Greece) were estimated. Results showed that roach are heavier of a given length in Lake Volvi than in other areas worldwide, with females exhibited higher weight than males of the same length. Significant differences (P<0.05) of LWRs were also exhibited between sexes depending on month. CLARK condition factor peaked at the end of summer displaying no significant difference between sexes, whereas the other three estimated condition factors (Allometric, FULTON, LE CREN) peaked in winter. The estimation of different proxies of condition factor disaggregated by sex might reduce the uncertainty raised by the estimation of fish growth.
Examining phonological awareness in deaf children who are learning to read in a transparent orthography: evidence from Greek*
This paper investigates the development of phonological awareness in Greek deaf children. A battery of phonological awareness tasks that assessed syllable, rhyme and phoneme awareness was administered to one group of deaf preschoolers (n = 13, CA = 5;9), one group of deaf children in primary school (n = 11, CA = 7;8) and two hearing comparison groups. The results showed that deaf preschoolers did not have phonological awareness at any linguistic level. After an average of 21 months of literacy instruction, deaf children had developed syllable awareness
Creativity in primary schools: exploring perspectives on creativity within a Scottish primary school classroom
This thesis explores children’s and teachers’ perspectives on creativity, and its
implementation, within one primary school classroom in Scotland. The
data collection phase of the research employed an ethnographic approach, involving four
and a half months of fieldwork in the primary school classroom. Data were generated from
participant observation/informal conversations with children and teachers and one round
of semi-structured interviews with twenty-five children (aged eleven to twelve) and two
teachers.
Creativity within primary education has been mainly studied through psychological
research, which is mainly based on theories of developmental psychology. Such theories
view creativity solely as an individual trait. Despite recognition of the importance of sociocultural
issues to the flourishing of children’s creativity, the study of their collaborative
creativity has been neglected – particularly in relation to socio-cultural power dynamics.
This thesis specifically analyses the balance between individual and collective creativity
in the primary classroom, examines how collaborative creativity can acknowledge
childhood diversity, and poses questions about how we include children with differing and
complex identities in creative processes.
Furthermore, this research has been carried out in Scotland, within the context of a fairly
new curriculum, the Curriculum for Excellence. This curriculum has been viewed by some
as a progressive, modern and motivating curriculum that enables children’s autonomy, and
by others as one that has been highly influenced by accountability and performativity
regimes, which leave limited space for children’s and teachers’ autonomy. This thesis
examines how the Curriculum for Excellence is interpreted in everyday practice and the
extent to which it enables the cultivation of children’s creativity. The thesis does so by
shedding light on the practical interconnections between children’s and teachers’ agency,
structural enablers/barriers, and cultural processes.
The findings of this study show that children perceive, perform and embody creativity not
only as an individual trait, but also as a collaborative process. However, the findings also
show that collaborative creativity entails many complexities and that cultural barriers to
creativity may emerge when power among people (children and teachers) operates in ways
that create cultures of exclusion. The thesis concludes that the multiple identities of the
Curriculum for Excellence, its multiple interpretations, and lack of coherence regarding
what is expected of teachers, leads to a blurred landscape of implementation. The thesis
argues that lack of a clear plan, strategy and framework for enabling creativity inhibits the
founding principles of the Curriculum for Excellence from being achieved. The thesis also
argues that environmental and structural barriers within the research setting inhibit the
flourishing of children’s creativity, but that the structural barriers can sometimes be
overcome through the construction of enabling cultures. The thesis is able to define
enabling cultures as cultures that value diversity, promote inclusion, and view space not
as static, but as a dynamic process.
In so doing, the findings of this study emphasise the interconnected importance of: viewing
creativity as an individual trait; perceiving creativity as a collaborative process; and
thinking in spatial terms, for example, in ways that create the space for children to perceive,
perform and embody creativity in their diverse, but equally valuable ways. This finding
enables this study to argue that there is a need for future policies and curricula which
promote and encourage greater flexibility in teaching and learning practices, in order to
enhance children’s and teachers’ agency and thus allow them to collaboratively create the
types of enabling environments, originally envisaged by the Curriculum for
Excellence, that will allow children’s creativity to flourish
The most common cancer of the human body is non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC), with basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) accounting for 95% of primary skin tumors. Radiation therapy is an effective treatment option, especially in cases where surgical removal cannot be applied, due to a particular anatomical point of the tumor or comorbidity of the patient. The main side effect of radiotherapy is acute radiodermatitis, which affects the quality of life of patients and their compliance to therapy. Despite the growing number of clinical trials, that have been conducted worldwide, there is still no regimen fulfilling our needs and expectations, in order to prevent such a disturbing side effect.
This clinical study was designed based on encouraging pharmacological and toxicological results, which emerged from previous preclinical and clinical research, during the application of Pinus halepensis bark extract (PHBE) in skin inflammation. The long-term preclinical research was conducted in Small Animal Laboratory of Pharmaceutical Technology Department of National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, while the previous clinical studies, same as the present study, were conducted in the Radiotherapy Oncology Department of Andreas Syggros Hospital of Cutaneous and Venereal Diseases.
Based on a previous study, PHBE nanofiber polymeric patch was produced by electrospinning, composed of Sodium Alginate (SA), Cellulose Acetate (CA), Polyethylene Oxide (PEO) and the active ingredient, bark extract of the plant Pinus halepensis (26,2% w/w). Purpose of this study was to formulate the PHBE patch, as well as, examine its efficacy and safety, in order to prevent acute radiodermatitis in patients with non-melanoma skin cancer undergoing radiotherapy. The action of PHBE patch was evaluated in comparison to a commercially available medical device.
According to the inclusion criteria, twelve volunteer patients were selected and randomly assigned to two groups, applying daily either PHBE patch or reference product. Evaluation of radiation-induced skin reactions was made according to RTOG grading scale, patients reported outcomes (VAS scale), biophysical measurements and image analysis (Antera 3D), during radiotherapy time and one month afterwards.
Statistical analysis showed PHBE patch to be more effective at ameliorating skin condition during radiotherapy time, as well as, one month afterwards preventing inflammation, reducing subjective discomfort and achieving better scores in biophysical measurements.
PHBE patch showed significant anti-inflammatory activity and maintenance of the normal skin properties. Examining further these results, two possible models of acute radiodermatitis progression were observed in intervention group. The first model is characterized by slowing acute radiodermatitis progression and finally symptom reduction, while the second one by acute radiodermatitis prevention.
No adverse event was reported in intervention group, indicating that PHBE patch is a safe topical prophylactic treatment for radiodermatitis. Future studies on greater sample size should be executed, in order to confirm these results
The thesis focuses on the study of the basic social group during the Neopalatial period in minoan Crete. The domestic group is perceived as the smallest social formation, which is studied as to its composition and structure and also as to its activities and character. Despite their variability and multiple forms, the domestic groups, during the centuries and in many different civilizations, similarly express the same needs, the identity and the effort of their members. The thesis uses as a case study one of the biggest and most important buildings of the settlement at Zakros, the “Strong Building”, which is mainly dated in the LM IB phase (1600/1500-1490/1470 B.C. or 1480-1425 B.C.). The architectural elements and the finds are used equally in order to track down the domestic group of the Strong Building as completely as possible. The number of the residents is around 10-15 to 19-20 individuals, an estimation that is further supported by the high quantity of objects and the storage capacity of the vessels. Furthermore, the existence of twin rooms with similar characteristics and functions suggests the double structure of the group, which formed a flourishing household, with multiple activities and in close interaction with the palace. In correlation with the Strong Building, other houses of the settlement at Zakros are examined too (Building of the Cyclopean Tower, Building F, Building of the Dithyra, Building G, Building H, Building of the Pottery Deposits, Oblique Building, Building A Hogarth, Building of the Polythyra, Building of the Niches, House I/J Hogarth, House A at Agios Antonios, House B at Agios Antonios, House Δα at Agios Antonios). In the aforementioned houses, we can discern a certain similarity concerning the composition of the domestic groups but, on the other hand, there are differences in their expression, their activities and their association with the palatial centre. We also locate the possible transformations of the domestic groups and the architectural modifications that took place during the LM IB phase. In a wider scale, various sites (Petras, Gournia, Mallia, Knossos, Phaistos, Palaikastro, Mochlos, Pseira, Galatas, Agia Triada, Kommos, Achladia, Klimataria, Profitis Ilias Praissou, Chalinomouri, Sklavokampos) are taken under consideration, in order to ascertain whether our conclusions upon the Strong Building and the settlement at Zakros can find a general application. In the selected sites, there seem to be similarities in the structure of the domestic groups, and moreover in their activities and the multiple aspects of their lives. Finally, the picture is verified and completed by the burial practices of the Neopalatial period, although the available data are incomplete. In the course of time, until recently, the bonds of the domestic groups in Crete remain extremely powerful and form the main regulating factor in their function. The first volume of the thesis includes the text and the bibliography, while the second volume contains the catalogue of the finds of the Strong Building, the mentions from the excavation diary, statistic tables concerning the number and the dispersion of the finds, excavation and recent photographs of the building, drawings and photographs of the finds, and additionally relevant material for other buildings of the settlement at Zakros and in Crete
