Auxiliary Verbs as Head-adjoined Expressives in Korean: Against the Aspectual Approach

    Get PDF
We examine the nature of the second verb (V2) in auxiliary verb constructions in Korean, in which one clause with two verbs denotes a single event. Arguing against the previous analyses that treat the V2 as an Aspect head, we propose that the V2 is head-adjoined to the v of the first verb (V1) and marks the speaker’s commitment toward the event described in the sentence

Image Segmentation by Edge Partitioning over a Nonsubmodular Markov Random Field

Edge weight-based segmentation methods, such as normalized cut or minimum cut, require a partition number specification for their energy formulation. The number of partitions plays an important role in the segmentation overall quality. However, finding a suitable partition number is a nontrivial problem, and the numbers are ordinarily manually assigned. This is an aspect of the general partition problem, where finding the partition number is an important and difficult issue. In this paper, the edge weights instead of the pixels are partitioned to segment the images. By partitioning the edge weights into two disjoints sets, that is, cut and connect, an image can be partitioned into all possible disjointed segments. The proposed energy function is independent of the number of segments. The energy is minimized by iterating the QPBO-α-expansion algorithm over the pairwise Markov random field and the mean estimation of the cut and connected edges. Experiments using the Berkeley database show that the proposed segmentation method can obtain equivalently accurate segmentation results without designating the segmentation numbers

The Impact of Service Recovery Communication Channel on Perceived Quality of Service Recovery and Consumer Behavior

    Get PDF
Consumers often encounter service failure, which consequently leads to consumer dissatisfaction, negative word-of-mouth, and the collapse of consumer loyalty (Kuo & Wu, 2012). As the critical negative impact of service failure has been revealed, service recovery—the process to solve consumer problems as a result of service failure (Miller, Craighead, & Karwan, 2000)—has recently been considered a crucial marketing strategy for researchers and service providers in maintaining customers relationships (Maxham, 2001). This study primarily aims to identify effective service recovery processes that positively influence consumer satisfaction, word-of-mouth intention, and loyalty intention based on the disconfirmation paradigm theory

The Effects of Customer Age on Service Recovery Evaluation Process in Retail

    Get PDF
As consumers are becoming more demanding and are responding to service providers\u27 failures in more negative ways, it is imperative to understand the impact of service failure and the importance of service recovery. Thus, researchers have examined customers\u27 process of evaluating service recovery, but customers\u27 personal characteristics have not been considered as relevant factors. Thus, this study investigates the effects of customer age on the customer service recovery evaluation process including service failure severity, service recovery expectations, perceived justice, and perceived emotions toward service recovery. The results showed that customer age significantly affects customer perception of service failure severity and service recovery expectations that they have before they received any service recovery activities, but customer age does not affect customers\u27 perception and evaluations after they received service recovery. Thus, companies should carefully consider customer age in order to meet their expectations and demands so as to compensate their loss and solve any problems caused by the service failure

The Use of Middle School Atlases in the Social Studies Classroom in South Korea

    Get PDF
Middle school atlases are supplementary textbooks for social studies learning in South Korea. Although atlases are developed and designed to provide various useful resources for students’ social studies learning, especially geography, atlases have not been frequently used in actual social studies classrooms, and sometimes they are never used. This study reports the causes of low adoption rates of middle school atlases in Korean social studies classrooms through the analysis of survey responses from both teachers and students. This study also addresses ways of increasing the use of atlases in the classroom

Prediction of Giant Spin Motive Force due to Rashba Spin-Orbit Coupling

Magnetization dynamics in a ferromagnet can induce a spin-dependent electric field through spin motive force. Spin current generated by the spin-dependent electric field can in turn modify the magnetization dynamics through spin-transfer torque. While this feedback effect is usually weak and thus ignored, we predict that in Rashba spin-orbit coupling systems with large Rashba parameter αR\alpha_{\rm R}, the coupling generates the spin-dependent electric field [\pm(\alpha_{\rm R}m_e/e\hbar) (\vhat{z}\times \partial \vec{m}/\partial t)], which can be large enough to modify the magnetization dynamics significantly. This effect should be relevant for device applications based on ultrathin magnetic layers with strong Rashba spin-orbit coupling.Comment: 4+ pages, 2 figure

Fluoroquinolone-mediated inhibition of cell growth, S-G2/M cell cycle arrest, and apoptosis in canine osteosarcoma cell lines.

Despite significant advancements in osteosarcoma research, the overall survival of canine and human osteosarcoma patients has remained essentially static over the past 2 decades. Post-operative limb-spare infection has been associated with improved survival in both species, yet a mechanism for improved survival has not been clearly established. Given that the majority of canine osteosarcoma patients experiencing post-operative infections were treated with fluoroquinolone antibiotics, we hypothesized that fluoroquinolone antibiotics might directly inhibit the survival and proliferation of canine osteosarcoma cells. Ciprofloxacin or enrofloxacin were found to inhibit p21(WAF1) expression resulting in decreased proliferation and increased S-G(2)/M accumulation. Furthermore, fluoroquinolone exposure induced apoptosis of canine osteosarcoma cells as demonstrated by cleavage of caspase-3 and PARP, and activation of caspase-3/7. These results support further studies examining the potential impact of quinolones on survival and proliferation of osteosarcoma

Second Generation Christian Korean Canadians: Exploring their Lived Experiences of Mental Health Issues and Services

Abstract This study explores the lived experiences of second-generation Christian Korean Canadian young adults with mental health issues (MHI) and their use of health services (MHS). In addition, this study asked this cohort to discuss their beliefs about the views their parents held about MHI and MHS. All research participants were born and raised in Canada by Korean born immigrant parents. This study was descriptive, phenomenological, and qualitative in nature; it consisted of in-depth interviews with six male and six female participants. In their experience with MHI, seven participants experienced fear and sadness (depression and anxiety) and three of them felt uncared for due to their MHI. Of the participants who reached out for MHS, seven expressed their wish for mental health services (psychotherapy) to be integrated with spiritual care; prayer and trust were the key themes that emerged. Five participants trusted faith-based mental health professionals more than secular mental health professionals; some (N=3) said that prayer support helped their healing process and added meaning to it. Lastly, most participants believed that their parents held the opinion that MHI and MHS were shameful. A few (N=3) were influenced by their parent’s beliefs: one feared being diagnosed; the others feared talking about MHI with a stranger. However, most of the participants had experienced supportive care with their choice of MHS, thereby, allowing them to hold very different beliefs (less shame) than they felt their parents held about MHI and MHS. This key findings from this study suggests that spiritually integrated psychotherapy may be helpful for some Christian Korean Canadian young adults
