    Combining social network analysis and geographic information system for communication research: an application to immigrant communities

    Social Network Analysis and Geographic Information Systems can be combined and applied to communication research to better understand how communication networks are associated with spatial or city characteristics. We use a case study of communication networks of immigrant church members (N = 178) in New Jersey to test theories of spatial versus strategic assimilation, visualize social networks, and city racial composition. The findings demonstrate that church members seeking information from coethnic immigrant networks were more likely to live in cities with a concentration of white residents, whereas members who provided more informational support to other members were less likely to live in whiter areas. Thus, coethnic residential choice may not always be linked to immigrant network use and the case applies more to the pattern of strategic assimilation. Future communication research involving questions related to physical locations and space can benefit from combining Social Network Analysis and Geographic Information System techniques in innovative ways.Financial support was provided by the University of Oklahoma Libraries’ Open Access Fund.Ye

    AMOD: a morpholino oligonucleotide selection tool

    AMOD is a web-based program that aids in the functional evaluation of nucleotide sequences through sequence characterization and antisense morpholino oligonucleotide (target site) selection. Submitted sequences are analyzed by translation initiation site prediction algorithms and sequence-to-sequence comparisons; results are used to characterize sequence features required for morpholino design. Within a defined subsequence, base composition and homodimerization values are computed for all putative morpholino oligonucleotides. Using these properties, morpholino candidates are selected and compared with genomic and transcriptome databases with the goal to identify target-specific enriched morpholinos. AMOD has been used at the University of Minnesota to design ∌200 morpholinos for a functional genomics screen in zebrafish.     The Pathways for Intelligible Speech: Multivariate and Univariate Perspectives

    An anterior pathway, concerned with extracting meaning from sound, has been identified in nonhuman primates. An analogous pathway has been suggested in humans, but controversy exists concerning the degree of lateralization and the precise location where responses to intelligible speech emerge. We have demonstrated that the left anterior superior temporal sulcus (STS) responds preferentially to intelligible speech (Scott SK, Blank CC, Rosen S, Wise RJS. 2000. Identification of a pathway for intelligible speech in the left temporal lobe. Brain. 123:2400-2406.). A functional magnetic resonance imaging study in Cerebral Cortex used equivalent stimuli and univariate and multivariate analyses to argue for the greater importance of bilateral posterior when compared with the left anterior STS in responding to intelligible speech (Okada K, Rong F, Venezia J, Matchin W, Hsieh IH, Saberi K, Serences JT,Hickok G. 2010. Hierarchical organization of human auditory cortex: evidence from acoustic invariance in the response to intelligible speech. 20: 2486-2495.). Here, we also replicate our original study, demonstrating that the left anterior STS exhibits the strongest univariate response and, in decoding using the bilateral temporal cortex, contains the most informative voxels showing an increased response to intelligible speech. In contrast, in classifications using local "searchlights” and a whole brain analysis, we find greater classification accuracy in posterior rather than anterior temporal regions. Thus, we show that the precise nature of the multivariate analysis used will emphasize different response profiles associated with complex sound to speech processin

    Evidence for partial melt in the crust beneath Mt. Paektu (Changbaishan), Democratic People's Republic of Korea and China

    Mt. Paektu (also known as Changbaishan) is an enigmatic volcano on the border between the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) and China. Despite being responsible for one of the largest eruptions in history, comparatively little is known about its magmatic evolution, geochronology, or underlying structure. We present receiver function results from an unprecedented seismic deployment in the DPRK. These are the first estimates of the crustal structure on the DPRK side of the volcano and, indeed, for anywhere beneath the DPRK. The crust 60 km from the volcano has a thickness of 35 km and a bulk VPV_\text{P}/VSV_\text{S} of 1.76, similar to that of the Sino-Korean craton. The VPV_\text{P}/VSV_\text{S} ratio increases ~20 km from the volcano, rising to >1.87 directly beneath the volcano. This shows that a large region of the crust has been modified by magmatism associated with the volcanism. Such high values of VPV_\text{P}/VSV_\text{S} suggest that partial melt is present in the crust beneath Mt. Paektu. This region of melt represents a potential source for magmas erupted in the last few thousand years and may be associated with an episode of volcanic unrest observed between 2002 and 2005.This work was supported by the Richard Lounsbery Foundation.     Cosmological constraints from Gauss-Bonnet braneworld with large-field potentials

    We calculate the spectral index and tensor-to-scalar ratio for patch inflation defined by H2≈ÎČq2VqH^2\approx \beta^2_q V^q and ϕ˙≈−Vâ€Č/3H\dot{\phi}\approx -V'/3H, using the slow-roll expansion. The patch cosmology arisen from the Gauss-Bonnet braneworld consists of Gauss-Bonnet (GB), Randall-Sundrum (RS), and 4D general relativistic (GR) cosmological models. In this work, we choose large-field potentials of V=V0ϕpV=V_0\phi^p to compare with the observational data. Since second-order corrections are rather small in the slow-roll limit, the leading-order calculation is sufficient to compare with the data. Finally, we show that it is easier to discriminate between quadratic potential and quartic potential in the GB cosmological model rather than the GR or RS cosmological models.Comment: 13 pages, title changed, version to appear in JCA

    Pharmacogenetic variants and risk of remdesivir-associated liver enzyme elevations in Million Veteran Program participants hospitalized with COVID-19

    Remdesivir is the first US Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved drug for the treatment of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). We conducted a retrospective pharmacogenetic study to examine remdesivir-associated liver enzyme elevation among Million Veteran Program participants hospitalized with COVID-19 between March 15, 2020, and June 30, 2021. Pharmacogene phenotypes were assigned using Stargazer. Linear regression was performed on peak log-transformed enzyme values, stratified by population, adjusted for age, sex, baseline liver enzymes, comorbidities, and 10 population-specific principal components. Patients on remdesivir had higher peak alanine aminotransferase (ALT) values following treatment initiation compared with patients not receiving remdesivir. Remdesivir administration was associated with a 33% and 24% higher peak ALT in non-Hispanic White (NHW) and non-Hispanic Black (NHB) participants (p < 0.001), respectively. In a multivariable model, NHW CYP2C19 intermediate/poor metabolizers had a 9% increased peak ALT compared with NHW normal/rapid/ultrarapid metabolizers (p = 0.015); this association was not observed in NHB participants. In summary, remdesivir-associated ALT elevations appear to be multifactorial, and further studies are needed
