Two-color interference stabilization of atoms
The effect of interference stabilization is shown to exist in a system of two
atomic levels coupled by a strong two-color laser field, the two frequencies of
which are close to a two-photon Raman-type resonance between the chosen levels,
with open channels of one-photon ionization from both of them. We suggest an
experiment, in which a rather significant (up to 90%) suppression of ionization
can take place and which demonstrates explicitly the interference origin of
stabilization. Specific calculations are made for H and He atoms and optimal
parameters of a two-color field are found. The physics of the effect and its
relation with such well-known phenomena as LICS and population trapping in a
three-level system are discussed.Comment: the paper includes 1 TeX file and 16 picture
New non-unitary representations in a Dirac hydrogen atom
New non-unitary representations of the SU(2) algebra are introduced for the
case of the Dirac equation with a Coulomb potential; an extra phase, needed to
close the algebra, is also introduced. The new representations does not require
integer or half integer labels. The set of operators defined are used to span
the complete space of bound state eigenstates of the problem thus solving it in
an essentially algebraic way
Interfering resonances in a quantum billiard
We present a method for numerically obtaining the positions, widths and
wavefunctions of resonance states in a two dimensional billiard connected to a
waveguide. For a rectangular billiard, we study the dynamics of three resonance
poles lying separated from the other ones. As a function of increasing coupling
strength between the waveguide and the billiard two of the states become
trapped while the width of the third one continues to increase for all coupling
strengths. This behavior of the resonance poles is reflected in the time delay
function which can be studied experimentally.Comment: 2 pages, 3 figure
Relativistic precession and spin dynamics of an elliptic Rydberg wave packet
Time evolution of wave packets built from the eigenstates of the Dirac
equation for a hydrogenic system is considered. We investigate the space and
spin motion of wave packets which, in the non-relativistic limit, are
stationary states with a probability density distributed uniformly along the
classical, elliptical orbit (elliptic WP). We show that the precession of such
a WP, due to relativistic corrections to the energy eigenvalues, is strongly
correlated with the spin motion. We show also that the motion is universal for
all hydrogenic systems with an arbitrary value of the atomic number Z.Comment: Latex2e, uses IOP style files (included), 10 pages, 5 jpg figures, 1

Phase transitions in open quantum systems
We consider the behaviour of open quantum systems in dependence on the
coupling to one decay channel by introducing the coupling parameter
being proportional to the average degree of overlapping. Under critical
conditions, a reorganization of the spectrum takes place which creates a
bifurcation of the time scales with respect to the lifetimes of the resonance
states. We derive analytically the conditions under which the reorganization
process can be understood as a second-order phase transition and illustrate our
results by numerical investigations. The conditions are fulfilled e.g. for a
picket fence with equal coupling of the states to the continuum. Energy
dependencies within the system are included. We consider also the generic case
of an unfolded Gaussian Orthogonal Ensemble. In all these cases, the
reorganization of the spectrum occurs at the critical value of
the control parameter globally over the whole energy range of the spectrum. All
states act cooperatively.Comment: 28 pages, 22 Postscript figure
R-matrix Floquet theory for laser-assisted electron-atom scattering
A new version of the R-matrix Floquet theory for laser-assisted electron-atom
scattering is presented. The theory is non-perturbative and applicable to a
non-relativistic many-electron atom or ion in a homogeneous linearly polarized
field. It is based on the use of channel functions built from field-dressed
target states, which greatly simplifies the general formalism.Comment: 18 pages, LaTeX2e, submitted to J.Phys.
Relativistic treatment of harmonics from impurity systems in quantum wires
Within a one particle approximation of the Dirac equation we investigate a
defect system in a quantum wire. We demonstrate that by minimally coupling a
laser field of frequency omega to such an impurity system, one may generate
harmonics of multiples of the driving frequency. In a multiple defect system
one may employ the distance between the defects in order to tune the cut-off
frequency.Comment: 9 pages Latex, 8 eps figures, section added, numerics improve

Collinear helium under periodic driving: stabilization of the asymmetric stretch orbit
The collinear eZe configuration of helium, with the electrons on opposite
sides of the nucleus, is studied in the presence of an external electromagnetic
(laser or microwave) field. We show that the classically unstable "asymmetric
stretch" orbit, on which doubly excited intrashell states of helium with
maximum interelectronic angle are anchored, can be stabilized by means of a
resonant driving where the frequency of the electromagnetic field equals the
frequency of Kepler-like oscillations along the orbit. A static magnetic field,
oriented parallel to the oscillating electric field of the driving, can be used
to enforce the stability of the configuration with respect to deviations from
collinearity. Quantum Floquet calculations within a collinear model of the
driven two-electron atom reveal the existence of nondispersive wave packets
localized on the stabilized asymmetric stretch orbit, for double excitations
corresponding to principal quantum numbers of the order of N > 10.Comment: 13 pages, 12 figure
