    Being in a Position to Know is the Norm of Assertion

    This paper defends a new norm of assertion: Assert that p only if you are in a position to know that p. We test the norm by judging its performance in explaining three phenomena that appear jointly inexplicable at first: Moorean paradoxes, lottery propositions, and selfless assertions. The norm succeeds by tethering unassertability to unknowability while untethering belief from assertion. The PtK‐norm foregrounds the public nature of assertion as a practice that can be other‐regarding, allowing asserters to act in the best interests of their audience when psychological pressures would otherwise prevent them from communicating the knowable truth

    An ultra-weak sector, the strong CP problem and the pseudo-Goldstone dilaton

    In the context of a Coleman-Weinberg mechanism for the Higgs boson mass, we address the strong CP problem. We show that a DFSZ-like invisible axion model with a gauge-singlet complex scalar field S, whose couplings to the Standard Model are naturally ultra-weak, can solve the strong CP problem and simultaneously generate acceptable electroweak symmetry breaking. The ultra-weak couplings of the singlet S are associated with underlying approximate shift symmetries that act as custodial symmetries and maintain technical naturalness. The model also contains a very light pseudo-Goldstone dilaton that is consistent with cosmological Polonyi bounds, and the axion can be the dark matter of the universe. We further outline how a SUSY version of this model, which may be required in the context of Grand Unification, can avoid introducing a hierarchy problem.Comment: 9 page

    Collaborative Collective Algorithms to Coordinate UGVs

    Sentel/Brilliant Innovations has developed autonomous UGVs (unmanned ground vehicles) capable of generating a map of an unknown location through exploration using local software and the power of Google Tango technology. This project was tasked with developing an efficient and capable map-stitching solution allowing multiple UGVs to coordinate their movements and share information in order to greatly improve the speed at which these drones can be used to generate maps. The solution utilizes the processing power of a Raspberry Pi to pull maps from a Redis server and stitch them together. Once stitched, the maps are redistributed via the Redis server back through the network, providing every UGV the opportunity to obtain the global map. All of this stitching is performed on a single UGV, freeing the other drones to focus on generating and uploading their own unique maps to the server. The drones can use this new information to better inform their next move to prevent multiple drones from generating a map of the same location. In the future, Sentel/Brilliant Innovations hopes to take this technology and attach more advanced sensors to the drones, allowing them to add greater detail of the environment to the map rather than simply drawing boundaries.     The Higgs boson mass may arise from a portal coupling to a singlet field σ\sigma which has a very large VEV fmHiggsf \gg m_\text{Higgs}. This requires a sector of "ultra-weak" couplings ζi\zeta_i, where ζimHiggs2/f2\zeta_i \lesssim m_\text{Higgs}^2 / f^2. Ultra-weak couplings are technically naturally small due to a custodial shift symmetry of σ\sigma in the ζi0\zeta_i \rightarrow 0 limit. The singlet field σ\sigma has properties similar to a pseudo-dilaton. We engineer explicit breaking of scale invariance in the ultra-weak sector via a Coleman-Weinberg potential, which requires hierarchies amongst the ultra-weak couplings.Comment: 6 page

    Rational Uniqueness and Religious Disagreement

    This paper argues for extreme rational permissivism—the view that agents with identical evidence can rationally believe contradictory hypotheses—and a mild version of steadfastness. Agents can rationally come to different conclusions on the basis of the same evidence because their way of weighing the theoretic virtues may differ substantially. Nevertheless, in the face of disagreement, agents face considerable pressure to reduce their confidence. Indeed, I argue that agents often ought to reduce their confidence in the higher-order propositions that they know or rationally believe disputed content. I argue, however, that when the subject matter is difficult, there is more flexibility for agents to simultaneously believe that p while withholding belief about whether such belief is rational or known. This allows for modest steadfastness on hard questions in, e.g., philosophy and religion

    Characterization of Transient Heating in Power Electronic Devices and its Implications for Die Attached Reliability

    Military and commercial interest in the use of power electronics for applications requiring extreme operating conditions and/or placement in extreme environments is driving research to identify and develop packaging technologies that can withstand these conditions. Specifically, there is an interest in the development of packaging technology than can function reliably under transient high power loading conditions. This thesis addresses the unique packaging considerations required for this type of application, with a focus on the implications on the durability of the die attach layer. Simulations of the thermal conditions experienced at the die attach layer for different power pulse magnitudes and durations are presented. A test apparatus and experimental test plan for studying the reliability of die attach materials under high power transient loading is discussed. Studies conducted to validate the test apparatus and characterize die attach reliability are described along with recommendations for further investigation of the reliability issues associated with high power, transient loading conditions

    Effects of Cocaine Sensitization on Drug Self-Administration, Mesocorticolimbic SAPAP Levels, and Prefrontal Ionotropic Glutamate Receptors

    Towards the goal of improving the knowledge base of how drugs of abuse function to create addicts and using currently uninvestigated areas of this knowledge base, we focused our research studies the male albino rat, and strived to explain how cocaine sensitization alters particular molecular mechanisms in the mesocorticolimbic system related to glutamate receptors, SAPAPs, and affects drug self-administration. Taking all the previously discussed research studies into consideration, we hypothesized that low-dose cocaine self-administration would yield a significant elevation in drug seeking behavior for psychostimulant sensitized animals. For specific changes at the PSD, we hypothesized that acute cocaine exposure and/or cocaine sensitization would alter iGluRs levels in the mPFC, and SAPAP levels in multiple sites of the mesocorticolimbic system. To test these hypotheses, we investigated the effects of psychostimulant sensitization on various parameters of self-administration by infusing a lowdose cocaine reward proven to not induce sensitization during self-administration (reported here as 0.3 mg/kg/infusion). Although drug exposure did not significantly alter self-administration behavior, we did find that more drug exposed subjects acquired self-administration behavior when compared to drug naïve controls. We also investigated the effects of acute cocaine exposure and/or cocaine sensitization on iGluRs in the mPFC and SAPAPs in the entire mesocorticolimbic circuit thru western blotting, immunolabeling of proteins of interest, and comparing protein levels to those found in cocaine naïve controls. A limited self-administration protocol also tested if SAPAP levels were altered by self-administration of a low-dose cocaine reward. For these experiments, we found that SAPAP protein levels are altered in multiple regions of the mesocorticolimbic system in response to contingent and non-contingent cocaine exposure, and that iGluR receptor subunits are altered in the prefrontal cortex in response to noncontingent cocaine exposure

    The Effect of Collective Bargaining on the Use of Innovative Police Policy

    While there have been numerous studies examining certain aspects of the effects of collective bargaining, there have yet to be any empirical studies on the effects of collective bargaining on the use of police policy. This study looks to address this issue by examining the impact of collective bargaining on the use of three currently innovative police policies: early warning systems, civilian review boards, and the use of in-car cameras. Using data from the 2003 Law Enforcement Management and Administrative Statistics (LEMAS) survey, we look at municipal agencies with over 100 officers. Using bi-variate analyses we compare each of the three dependent variables to the independent variable, collective bargaining. Our study found significant findings for the use of civilian review boards and the use of in-car camera systems. Our study found that agencies engaged in collective bargaining were less likely to use the given program. This is important because no study has yet to examine the use of collective bargaining and its effect on policy use. Future studies should look closer at these types of issues using more complex analyses
