SiO and H2O Maser Observations of Red Supergiants in Star Clusters Embedded in the Galactic Disk
We present the result of radio observations of red supergiants in the star
cluster, Stephenson's #2, and candidates for red supergiants in the star
clusters, Mercer et al. (2005)'s #4, #8, and #13, in the SiO and HO maser
lines.The Stephenson's #2 cluster and nearby aggregation at the South-West
contain more than 15 red supergiants. We detected one at the center of
Stephenson's #2 and three in the south-west aggregation in the SiO maser line,
and three of these 4 were also detected in the H2O maser line. The average
radial velocity of the 4 detected objects is 96 km s^{-1}, giving a kinematic
distance of 5.5 kpc, which locates this cluster near the base of the
Scutum-Crux spiral arm. We also detected 6 SiO emitting objects associated with
the other star clusters. In addition, mapping observations in the CO J=1--0
line toward these clusters revealed that an appreciable amount of molecular gas
still remains around Stephenson's #2 cluster in contrast to the prototypical
red-supergiant cluster, Bica et al.'s #122. It indicates that a time scale of
gas expulsion differs considerably in individual clusters.Comment: high res. figures available at

Planetary nebulae detected in the Spitzer Space Telescope GLIMPSE 3D Legacy Survey
Due to interstellar extinction, optical census of Galactic planetary nebulae (PNs) is highly incomplete, and some compact H ii regions might have been mis-classified as PNs. The problem is particularly severe in the Galactic plane where the extinction in the optical is significant and hampers the detections of PNs. Unlike optical observations, infrared (IR) observations are hardly affected by interstellar extinction, and provide a good opportunity to study highly obscured PNs. Morphokinematic properties of the 21 micron source IRAS 22272+5435
We obtained a high-resolution CO map of IRAS 22272+5435 in the CO J=2-1 line using CARMA. The target exhibits a second biggest angular size of the circumstellar molecular envelope among known 21 μm sources. In the preliminary results, we found that the CO properties of IRAS 22272+5435 is clearly different from those of IRAS 07134+1005, which is another well-investigated 21 μm source. For example, elongations seen in the mid-infrared and CO images are extended in mutually perpendicular directions, although in case of IRAS 07134+1005 the CO feature coincides well with the mid-infrared structure. © 2012 International Astronomical Union.published_or_final_versio
Computationally efficient solutions for tracking people with a mobile robot: an experimental evaluation of Bayesian filters
Modern service robots will soon become an essential part of modern society. As they have to move and act in human environments, it is essential for them to be provided with a fast and reliable tracking system that localizes people in the neighbourhood. It is therefore important to select the most appropriate filter to estimate the position of these persons.
This paper presents three efficient implementations of multisensor-human tracking based on different Bayesian estimators: Extended Kalman Filter (EKF), Unscented Kalman Filter (UKF) and Sampling Importance Resampling (SIR) particle filter. The system implemented on a mobile robot is explained, introducing the methods used to detect and estimate the position of multiple people. Then, the solutions based on the three filters are discussed in detail. Several real experiments are conducted to evaluate their performance, which is compared in terms of accuracy, robustness and execution time of the estimation. The results show that a solution based on the UKF can perform as good as particle filters and can be often a better choice when computational efficiency is a key issue
Fabrication and Characterization of Topological Insulator BiSe Nanocrystals
In the recently discovered class of materials known as topological
insulators, the presence of strong spin-orbit coupling causes certain
topological invariants in the bulk to differ from their values in vacuum. The
sudden change of invariants at the interface results in metallic, time reversal
invariant surface states whose properties are useful for applications in
spintronics and quantum computation. However, a key challenge is to fabricate
these materials on the nanoscale appropriate for devices and probing the
surface. To this end we have produced 2 nm thick nanocrystals of the
topological insulator BiSe via mechanical exfoliation. For crystals
thinner than 10 nm we observe the emergence of an additional mode in the Raman
spectrum. The emergent mode intensity together with the other results presented
here provide a recipe for production and thickness characterization of

Current-voltage characteristic and stability in resonant-tunneling n-doped semiconductor superlattices
We review the occurrence of electric-field domains in doped superlattices
within a discrete drift model. A complete analysis of the construction and
stability of stationary field profiles having two domains is carried out. As a
consequence, we can provide a simple analytical estimation for the doping
density above which stable stable domains occur. This bound may be useful for
the design of superlattices exhibiting self-sustained current oscillations.
Furthermore we explain why stable domains occur in superlattices in contrast to

Solitary waves of nonlinear nonintegrable equations
Our goal is to find closed form analytic expressions for the solitary waves
of nonlinear nonintegrable partial differential equations. The suitable
methods, which can only be nonperturbative, are classified in two classes.
In the first class, which includes the well known so-called truncation
methods, one \textit{a priori} assumes a given class of expressions
(polynomials, etc) for the unknown solution; the involved work can easily be
done by hand but all solutions outside the given class are surely missed.
In the second class, instead of searching an expression for the solution, one
builds an intermediate, equivalent information, namely the \textit{first order}
autonomous ODE satisfied by the solitary wave; in principle, no solution can be
missed, but the involved work requires computer algebra.

Diffraction-limited 3 μm spectroscopy of IRAS 04296+3429 and IRAS 05341+0852: Spatial extent of hydrocarbon dust emission and dust evolutionary sequence
We present 3 μm spectroscopy of the carbon-rich protoplanetary nebulae IRAS 04296+3429 and IRAS 05341+0852, conducted with the adaptive optics system at the Subaru Telescope. We utilize the nearly diffraction-limited spectroscopy to probe the spatial extent of the hydrocarbon dust emitting zone. We find a hydrocarbon emission core extending up to 100-160 mas from the center of IRAS 04296+3429, corresponding to a physical diameter of 400-640 AU, assuming a distance of 4 kpc. However, we find that IRAS 05341+0852 is not spatially resolved with this instrumentation. The physical extent of these protoplanetary nebulae, along with the reanalyzed data of IRAS 22272+5435 published previously, suggests a correlation between the physical extent of the hydrocarbon dust emission and the spectral evolution of the aliphatic to aromatic features in these post-AGB stars. Being Healthy: a Grounded Theory Study of Help Seeking Behaviour among Chinese Elders living in the UK
The health of older people is a priority in many countries as the world’s population ages. Attitudes towards help seeking behaviours in older people remain a largely unexplored field of research. This is particularly true for older minority groups where the place that they have migrated to presents both cultural and structural challenges. The UK, like other countries,has an increasingly aging Chinese population about who relatively little is known. This study used a qualitative grounded
theory design following the approach of Glaser (1978). Qualitative data were collected using semi-structured interviews with 33 Chinese elders who were aged between 60 and 84, using purposive and theoretical sampling approaches. Data were analysed using the constant comparative method until data saturation occurred and a substantive theory was generated. ‘Being healthy’ (the core category) with four interrelated categories: self-management, normalizing/minimizing, access to health services, and being cured form the theory. The theory was generated around the core explanations provided by
participants and Chinese elders’ concerns about health issues they face in their daily life. We also present data about how they direct their health-related activities towards meeting their physical and psychological goals of being healthy. Their differential understanding of diseases and a lack of information about health services were potent predictors of non�help seeking and ‘self’ rather than medical management of their illnesses. This study highlights the need for intervention and health support for Chinese elders
The Effect of Splayed Pins on Vortex Creep and Critical Currents
We study the effects of splayed columnar pins on the vortex motion using
realistic London Langevin simulations. At low currents vortex creep is strongly
suppressed, whereas the critical current j_c is enhanced only moderately.
Splaying the pins generates an increasing energy barrier against vortex
hopping, and leads to the forced entanglement of vortices, both of which
suppress creep efficiently. On the other hand splaying enhances kink nucleation
and introduces intersecting pins, which cut off the energy barriers. Thus the
j_c enhancement is strongly parameter sensitive. We also characterize the angle
dependence of j_c, and the effect of different splaying geometries.Comment: 4 figure
