Effect of anisotropy distribution on local nucleation field in bistable ferromagntic microwires
Critical parameters defining the local nucleation field in amorphous
ferromagnetic microwires with positive magnetostriction are obtained
analytically through scaling procedures. Exact value of the nucleation field is
obtained numerically as a function of geometric parameters of anisotropy
distribution, which is fully taken into account instead of being averaged out.
It is established that the value of nucleation field depends predominantly on
the steepness of anisotropy change withing the boundary between axial and
radial domains, while the maximal value of anisotropy inside the wire or an
overall average is not relevant.Comment: 12 pages, 4 figure

Is the state ownership of enterprises gaining in importance in a modern economy?
Despite the ongoing privatization, state-owned enterprises (SOEs) still play an important role in many countries. Moreover, some scholars argue that today we are dealing with a possible of return of state-owned enterprises in the global economy. This paper reviews available data on SOEs in the context of the above mentioned thesis. First we review data on the current scope, structure and importance of the state-owned enterprise sector in a modern economy. It can be concluded that the SOEs play a significant role in a modern economy. Primarily this statement can be applied to developing countries. However, in developed countries SOEs constitute an important part of the economy as well. Next we review data on changing importance of SOEs. For this purpose we examine the Fortune Global 500 list, Product Market Regulation (PMR) indicator data and the list of the largest Polish companies. Subsequently we try to explain those ongoing trends. We could say that SOEs play a significant role in a modern economy and there is some evidence that they are gaining in importance. Among the factors responsible for this possible increase of the importance of SOEs in the world economy are: - The changes in the balance of power in the global economy, especially due to the rise of China and other BRIC countries, where government ownership plays a relatively large role in comparison with OECD countries. - Issues related to the control over natural resources. - The increase in government activity in many areas of the economy as a result of the financial crisis. However this process is not leading to a return to the number of SOEs that we saw in the 20th century, but what we see is a change in the way in which SOEs are used by the state owner. Governments are attempting to maintain the control and simultaneously to improve the efficiency of SOEs through better governance and greater reliance on market mechanisms

Cittaslow International Network: An Example of a Globalization Idea?
The strong dynamics of the development of the International Assembly of Cittaslow
Association development (which now focuses not only on European cities, but also on centers located on other continents), has led to discussions about the place of the Cittaslow concept in the modern world and the relationship between the phenomenon of globalization and the Cittaslow development. Research conducted in the cities belonging to the Polish Assembly of Cittaslow Association provided an opportunity to examine the problem not only on the overall scale but gives also an opportunity to respond to this issue on the micro level - the level of individual consciousness of city dwellers. It appears that the original idea has taken on new meanings and serves as a response to the negative effects of globalization. It has acquired a transnational character and now is setting new global trends
Impacts of Globalization on Tourist Preferences and Activity
Mass tourism is widely regarded as one of the visible manifestations of globalization.
Tourism development can be considered in every dimension of these processes: economic, social, cultural and even political. The high importance of tourism in the present global economy makes it a very popular research field, especially in the scope of economic dependence between tourism and globalization at the global or regional levels. Fully appreciating the achievements of research in this domain, the authors of this paper wish to refer to the scale of the unit and indicate how globalization impacts the individual purchasing decisions. The analysis is based on empirical studies within Polish tourist activity preferences. On the basis of these results the authors attempt to answer the following questions: (1) which tourists' attitudes may reveal the impact of globalization on their preferences and purchasing behaviors; (2) which 'mega-trends' of current tourism are visible in the attitude of Polish tourists; (3) are there differences in the model of tourist activity with reference to the sociodemographic features; (4) what is the spatial scope of preferred tourist destinations (i.e. is the compression of space as readily absorbed in the consciousness of the older population as in the younger?)
MRI-based in vivo detection of coronary microvascular dysfunction before alterations in cardiac function induced by short-term high-fat diet in mice
Endothelial dysfunction is one of the hallmarks of vascular abnormalities in metabolic diseases and has been repeatedly demonstrated in coronary and peripheral circulation in mice fed high-fat diet (HFD), particularly after long-term HFD. However, the temporal relationship between development of coronary microvascular endothelial dysfunction and deterioration in diastolic and systolic cardiac function after short-term feeding with HFD has not yet been studied. This study aimed to correlate the changes in coronary microvascular endothelial function and global cardiac performance indices in vivo after short-term feeding with HFD in mice. Short-term feeding with a HFD (60% fat + 1% cholesterol) resulted in severely impaired coronary microvascular function, as evidenced by the diminished effect of nitric oxide synthase inhibition (by L-NAME) assessed using T1 mapping via in vivo MRI. Deterioration of coronary microvascular function was detected as early as after 7 days of HFD and further declined after 8 weeks on a HFD. HFD-induced coronary microvascular dysfunction was not associated with impaired myocardial capillary density and was present before systemic insulin resistance assessed by a glucose tolerance test. Basal coronary flow and coronary reserve, as assessed using the A2A adenosine receptor agonist regadenoson, were also not altered in HFD-fed mice. Histological analysis did not reveal cardiomyocyte hypertrophy or fibrosis. Increased lipid accumulation in cardiomyocytes was detected as early as after 7 days of HFD and remained at a similar level at 8 weeks on a HFD. Multiparametric cardiac MRI revealed a reduction in systolic heart function, including decreased ejection rate, increased end-systolic volume and decreased myocardial strain in diastole with impaired ejection fraction, but not until 4 weeks of HFD. Short-term feeding with HFD resulted in early endothelial dysfunction in coronary microcirculation that preceded alteration in cardiac function and systemic insulin resistance
