Adapting the large neighborhood search to effectively solve pickup and delivery problems with time windows

Pickup and delivery problems with time windows (PDP-TW) are challenging combinatorial optimization problems widely occurring in modern distribution and transportation industry. A previous proposal successfully adapted and combined the well-known push forward insertion heuristic (PFIH) with a new repair-based swap operator as a computationally reduced version of the Large Neighborhood Search (LNS) to efficiently solve the PDP-TWs. In this paper, we focus on a more systematic scheme to adapt the LNS in order to effectively solve PDP-TWs. Up to our knowledge, this work represents the first attempt to systematically adapt LNS for solving PDP-TWs. Besides, the empirical results obtained by our search proposals affirmed the attractive capability of the LNS approach to effectively reduce the total distance traveled in solving PDP-TWs, with similar results also achieved by the original LNS method in tackling the conventional vehicle routing problems with time windows. Lastly, our proposal of adapting LNS to solve hard combinatorial problems opens up many possible directions for future investigations. © 2004 IEEE.published_or_final_versio

Enhanced mobility for pentacene TFT built on NH3-annealed thermally grown SiO2

    Get PDF
We have enhanced the mobility of pentacene OTFTs using NH 3-annealed SiO2 as gate dielectric and this annealing method is often applied in the semiconductor industry for inorganic transistors. The device has field-effect mobility higher than 0.5 cm2/Vs, with on/off current ratio larger than 106, and subthreshold slope less than 2.5 V per decade. When compared with the control sample, which uses N 2-annealed SiO2, the mobility of the proposed pentacene OTFT increases by over 50%. © 2005 IEEE.published_or_final_versio

The Effect of Empty Space on Choice Deferral

    Get PDF
Visual space is a fundamental component in visual communications. In five experiments, we demonstrate that the blank margin of a choice set increases the extent to which consumers defer choices. Our findings show that this effect is driven by the enhanced salience of alternatives instead of processing difficulty and fluency

Comparison of different dosing regimens (once weekly vs. twice weekly, and once weekly vs. once every two weeks) with epoetin delta in patients with chronic kidney disease: a randomized controlled trial

Abstract

Background

Anaemia is a common complication of chronic kidney disease and prevalence increases with declining renal function. Renal anaemia has significant implications for the well-being and quality of life of patients and impacts on morbidity and mortality. Anaemia can be well managed by therapy with erythropoiesis-stimulating agents (ESAs). Previous clinical trials have shown that the only human cell-line-derived ESA, epoetin delta, is well tolerated and effective in maintaining haemoglobin levels in anaemic patients with chronic kidney disease. The half-life of epoetin delta suggests that administration of this agent is feasible once weekly and once every two weeks. We report on the design and rationale of a trial to compare once weekly <it>vs</it>. twice weekly, and once weekly <it>vs</it>. once every two weeks dosing of epoetin delta.

Design and methods

This is a randomized, open-label, multicentre trial. Patients aged 18 years or above with chronic kidney disease (Stages 3–5) are eligible to enter this trial. Two groups of patients form the trial population, those naïve to ESA therapy and those previously stable on ESA therapy. There are two primary objectives of this trial: 1) to demonstrate non-inferiority between twice weekly and once weekly dosing of epoetin delta in previously naïve patients (assessed by haemoglobin at Week 24); 2) to demonstrate non-inferiority between once weekly and once every two weeks dosing in previously stable patients (assessed by average haemoglobin over Weeks 16–24). Among the secondary analyses will be assessments of haematocrit, number(%) of patients meeting predefined targets for haemoglobin and haematocrit levels, and comparisons of average dose. All patients will receive study medication for 24 weeks and dose will be adjusted according to a predefined algorithm to achieve and maintain haemoglobin ≥ 11 g/dL. All patients completing this trial are eligible to enter a 2-year follow-up study to enable monitoring of emergent adverse events, anti-erythropoietin antibody responses, maintenance of efficacy and changes in diabetic retinopathy status.

Discussion

To our knowledge, this trial is the first to randomize ESA-naïve patients to different dosing regimens of the same ESA. Data generated will help in guiding the most appropriate dosing frequency for epoetin delta, particularly in those patients new to epoetin delta therapy.

Trial registration

ClinicalTrials.gov: NCT00450333</p

The Impact of the Oncotype DX Breast Cancer Assay on Treatment Decisions for Women With Estrogen Receptor-Positive, Node-Negative Breast Carcinoma in Hong Kong

Background The Oncotype DX Breast Cancer Assay is validated to assess risk of distant recurrence and likelihood of chemotherapy (CT) benefit in estrogen receptor-positive ESBC in various populations. In Hong Kong, > 80% of breast cancers are early stage breast cancer (ESBC) and > 60% of these women receive CT. This prospective study measured changes in CT type and recommendations, as well as physician impression of assay impact in a homogenous Chinese population. Methods Consecutive patients with estrogen receptor-positive, T1-3 N0-1mi M0 ESBC were offered enrollment. After surgery, physicians discussed treatment options with patients, then ordered the assay, then reassessed treatment recommendation considering assay results. Changes in treatment recommendation, CT utilization, physician confidence, and physician rating of influence on their treatment recommendations were measured. Results A total of 146 evaluable patients received pre- and post-testing treatment recommendations. CT recommendations (including changes in intensity of CT) were changed for 34 of 146 patients (23.3%; 95% confidence interval, 16.7%-31.0%); change in intensity occurred in 7 of 146 (4.8%). There were 27 changes in treatment recommendations of adding or removing CT altogether (18.5% change; 95% confidence interval, 12.6%-25.8%). CT recommendations decreased from 52.1% to 37.7%, a net absolute reduction of 14.4% (P < .001; 27.6% net relative reduction). Pre-assay, 96% of physicians agreed/strongly agreed that they were confident in their treatment recommendation; post-assay, 90% of physicians agreed/strongly agreed with the same statement. Thirty percent of physicians agreed/strongly agreed that the test had influenced their recommendation, similar to the proportion of changed recommendations. Conclusions The Oncotype DX Assay appears to influence physician ESBC adjuvant treatment recommendations in Hong Kong.published_or_final_versio

Sources of pro-cyclicality in east Asian financial systems

    Get PDF
Procyclicality is a normal feature of economic systems, but financial sector weaknesses can exacerbate it sufficiently to pose a threat to macroeconomic and financial stability. These include shortcomings in bank risk management and governance, in supervision and in terms of dependence on volatile sources of funds. The paper tests econometrically for the importance of such features leading to pro-cyclicality in the financial systems of 11 East Asian countries. This analysis makes it possible to identify specific policy measures for East Asian countries that could limit the extent to which financial systems exacerbate pro-cyclicality
