    RACIAL PREJUDICE IN WILL EISNER’S FAGIN THE JEW GRAPHIC NOVEL

    This study discusses  racial prejudice issue experienced by main character in a graphic novel entitled Fagin The Jew by Will Eisner (2003).  This study aims to explore the racial prejudice through the prejudice scale as the manifestation of prejudice action and also reveal the ego defense as the response to prejudice.  The method used in conducting this study is qualitative approach and the theory of prejudice by Allport (1954) is used to analyze the data.  The results  show  that there are four scales of prejudice act occur within the story.  These scales are verbal rejection (antilocution), avoidance, discrimination, and physical attack. Moreover, the study exposes that the victims did some ego defenses mechanism, namely denial of membership, slyness and cunning and enhanced striving

    The Semiotics Analysis on the Environment in “The Journey to Atlantis” Picture Book

    This study aimed (1) to describe the semiotic process of environment symbols in The Journey to Atlantis, (2)to generate the meaning of identified symbols which are shown through verbal and non-verbal contained in The Journey to Atlantis. This is a descriptive qualitative study trying to identify and analyze semiosis process of environment symbols, and describe the found verbal and nonverbal symbols in Elisabetta Dami’s The Journey to Atlantis Picture Book using semiotic theory by Charles Sanders Peirce (1991).  The data for the finding and analysis were taken from Elisabetta Dami’sThe Journey to Atlantis (2012) Picture Book. The study shows that there are 40 icons in form of words and 36 onomatopoeia as verbal symbols, and 40 picture decribe Atlantis environment and 18 color as nonverbal symbols which are related to the environment

    PATRIARCHAL SOCIETY AND WOMEN’S POSITION IN ACTION MOVIE GENRE: CASE STUDY OF PIERRE MOREL’S TAKEN

    Action movie has established itself as one of the leading movie genres which has been present in the film industry for a long time. However, action movie genre has been characterized as male-oriented. This study aims to reveal the issue of patriarchal society and women's position represented in action movie entitled Taken, directed by Pierre Morel. Research problems in this study are related to: (a) how is the superiority of men depicted in the movie, and (b) how is women represented as the secondary subject. To analyze the movie, this study used the theory of Simone de Beauvoir especially in her book, The Second Sex. The result of this study showed that Taken movie reproduce the stereotype of action movie genre as male-oriented and women is considered as the secondary subject.Keywords: Taken, Action Movie Genre, Patriarchal Society, Secondary Subject, Simone de Beauvoir

    IMPROVING THE STUDENTS’ LISTENING COMPREHENSION BY USING DISCUSSION WITH AUDIO-VISUAL MEDIA (VIDEO)

    This research focuses on the use of audio-visual media (video) to improve the students' listening skill for the seventh-grade students of SMP PGRI Curug in the academic year of 2019/2020. Aim of this study is to find out whether the use of audio-visual media (video) can improve the students‟ listening skill and how far the improvement in students listening skill by using audio-visual media (video). The method of this research is action research. The technique of data analysis is qualitative research. Each cycle comprises planning, acting, observation, and reflecting. The researcher stated that there is an improvement of students‟ listening skill using audio-visual media (video). It can be seen from the number of students who pass the passing grade (KKM) in cycle I and cycle II. The passing grade is 70. The result of a listening test in a pre- cycle without using video got an average score of 64,80 or 33 % of students to get a good score or the passing grade (KKM). In the cycle, I, the result of the listening test using video, got an average score of 71,07. or 66 % of students get a good score or the passing grade (KKM). The students were easier to listen to. Although they still found it difficult to focus while watching a video. The result of the listening test got better in cycle II. The students were more understanding in doing their activity using video. In this cycle, they got an average score of 76,93 or 100 % of students to get a good score or the passing grade (KKM)

    The goal of this study is to find out the effectiveness of using Total Physical Method in teaching English Basic Skills for kindergarten students, especially in Docto Rabbit Kindergarten School, Telaga Golf, Sawangan, Depok. The method used is quantitative method and to analyze the data, SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Scientist) 16 regarding T-Test is used.  The finding of this study is the fact that using Total Physical Response method is effective in teaching English basic skills for young learners because it suit with their characters. TPR method, developed by Dr. James Asher tries to introduce some language skills in an action in which a teacher serves three roles: an order taker, a model provider, and an action monitor in which learners serve as models and action performers until they feel ready to speak out and enjoy studying English. Key words: young learners, total physical response (TPR), English Basic Skill

    THE YOUNG LEARNERS’ PERCEPTION TOWARDS ENGLISH INSTRUCTIONAL PRACTICES USING VIRTUAL PLATFORMS

    The popularity of virtual-learning platforms as an alternative for instructional practices during the pandemic is rocketing yet students’ perceptions to the implementation are not optimally gauged especially to young learners. This study explores the students’ perception towards learning English using two popular virtual platforms during Covid-19 pandemic. This is a case study involving 30 students in their third-year study at a private primary-school primary school in Tangerang City, Banten. Interviewing and observing all students respectively were conducted to obtain the data needed. Using descriptive analysis, it was found that the students showed negative perceptions towards the online-based learning process. Not only the media but also the whole learning process was negatively impacted. This is a voice that highlights the issue of recent education is facing. Further studies are therefore suggested to delve into effective and feasible solutions to eradicate the negative perception because the best time to return to classroom-situated instructions remains arguable for no-exact tim

    Tujuan dari kegiatan PKM ini adalah memberikan pelatihan kompetisi Bahasa Inggris untuk peserta didik Jampang English Village (JEV) dan meningkatkan pengetahuan dan pemahaman dalam mempraktikkan bercerita dalam Bahasa Inggris, membaca puisi serta berpidato dalam Bahasa Inggris. Selain itu kompetisi ini bertujuan untuk mengukur kemampuan peserta didik dalam ketrampilannya berbahasa Inggris. Target dalam kegiatan PKM ini adalah peserta didik JEV di Bogor. Metode yang digunakan yaitu dengan pendekatan Total Physical Response (TPR) yang mengedepankan penggunaan bahasa tubuh dalam memberikan tips atau strategi dalam menghadapi kompetisi Bahasa Inggris. Selain itu peserta didik juga diberikan pembekalan dalam berinteraksi dengan penonton ketika berada di depan panggung. Kegiatan pengabdian mulai dari tahap persiapan yakni observasi dan sosialisasi, sedangkan untuk pelaksanaan mulai dari penyajian materi, praktik, refleksi dan evaluasi. Pada akhir pelaksanaan kegiatan PKM, peserta lomba Bahasa Inggris memahami teknik pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris yang berkaitan poetry, storytelling, and speech competition, meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara dan pengucapan yang benar disetiap kata

    Dalam konteks kemajuan sebuah bangsa, secara ideal, pembangunan fisik dan pembangunan karakter manusia seyogianya berjalan dengan beriringan. Pembangunan fisik dan infrastruktur secara masif niscaya akan mendorong tumbuhnya perekonomian secara cepat, yang berimplikasi pada meningkatnya kesejahteraan masyarakat Indonesia. Melihat realitas, pada situasi dewasa ini muncul banyak permasalahan sosial yang pada dasarnya berpangkal pada merosotnya pembangunan karakter bangsa. Oleh karena itu, diperlukan adanya gerakan untuk mengantisipasi hal tersebut. Gerakan untuk membangun karakter masyarakat dan manusia pada dasarnya dapat berangkat dari berbagai macam cara. Universitas, dalam hal ini khususnya Fakultas Sastra, memiliki tanggung jawab moral dan akademik dalam menghadapi situasi tersebut. Sebagai solusi dari paparan permasalahan di atas, maka tim PKM Prodi Sastra Inggris Universitas Pamulang berinisiatif untuk mengadakan kegiatan PKM bertajuk “Pembangunan Karakter dan Pelatihan Storytelling Berbasis Cerita Rakyat/Folklore kepada Kelompok Belajar Al Muhajirin At Taqwa Benda Baru Pamulang”.     This study aims at classifying and finding out the meanings of slang words and/or phrases found in Mean Girls film. Every slang word or phrase from the film was classified into their types by using Eric Partridge’s theory (1954). This is a descriptive qualitative method conducted by portraying the possible meanings and the types of slang words or phrases found in the dialogues of the film. Several slang dictionaries and other related references were used to support this study. This study found that there are several types of slang words found in the film. They are: Public-house Slang, Society Slang, Public School and University and The Church.
