    Quenching of the E2 phonon line in the Raman spectra of wurtzite GaAs nanowires caused by the dielectric polarization contrast

    We investigate the Raman intensity of EH2 phonons in wurtzite GaAs nanowire ensembles as well as single nanowires as a function of excitation wavelength. For nanowires with radii in the range of 25 nm, an almost complete quenching of the EH2 phonon line is observed for excitation wavelengths larger than 600 nm. The observed behavior is quantitatively explained by the dielectric polarization contrast for the coupling of light into the GaAs nanowires. Our results define the limits of Raman spectroscopy for the detection of the wurtzite phase in semiconductor nanowires

    Strong Ramsey games: Drawing on an infinite board

    Consider the following strong Ramsey game. Two players take turns in claiming a previously unclaimed edge of the complete graph on n vertices until all edges have been claimed. The first player to build a copy of K5 is declared the winner of the game. If none of the players win, then the game ends in a draw. A simple strategy stealing argument shows that the second player cannot expect to ever win this game. Moreover, for sufficiently large n, it follows from Ramsey’s Theorem that the game cannot end in a draw and is thus a first player win. A famous question of Beck asks whether the minimum number of moves needed for the first player to win this game on Kn grows with n. This seems unlikely but is still wide open. A striking equivalent formulation of this question is whether the same game played on the infinite complete graph is a first player win or a draw. The target graph of the strong Ramsey game does not have to be K5, it can be any predetermined fixed graph. In fact, it can even be a k-uniform hypergraph (and then the game is played on the infinite k-uniform hypergraph). Since strategy stealing and Ramsey’s Theorem still apply, one can ask the same question: is this game a first player win or a draw? The same intuition which lead most people (including the authors) to believe that the K5 strong Ramsey game on the infinite board is a first player win, would also lead one to believe that the H strong Ramsey game on the infinite board is a first player win for any uniform hypergraph H. However, in this paper we construct a 5-uniform hypergraph for which the corresponding game is a draw

    Influence of pre-strain and bake hardening on the static and fatigue strength of a DP600 steel sheet

    The influence of pre-strain on the tensile and fatigue properties of a dual phase DP600 steel was studied. The material was pre-strained by uni-axial tension in rolling and transverse direction. Thereafter, specimens were cut from the deformed plates in parallel or orthogonal to pre-strain direction. It was found that pre-strain increases yield and tensile strength. Results suggested that strain path change primarily affects the elastic-plastic transition during early stage of reloading. Pre-strained specimens showed an increase in high cycle regimes as a consequence of yield strength increment, irrespective of imposed pre-straining direction. A modified stress life equation that accounts for pre-strain was proposed and showed good agreement with experimental data. Bake hardening enhanced both tensile and high cycle fatigue resistance. Walker equation was successfully fitted to account for tensile mean stress. In low cycle fatigue, negligible influence of pre-strain was observed due to cyclic softening and residual stress relaxation

    A systematic comparison of polar and semipolar Si-doped AlGaN alloys with high AlN content

    Abstract With a view to supporting the development of ultra-violet light-emitting diodes and related devices, the compositional, emission and morphology properties of Si-doped n-type Al x Ga1-x N alloys are extensively compared. This study has been designed to determine how the different Al x Ga1-x N crystal orientations (polar (0001) and semipolar (11–22)) affect group-III composition and Si incorporation. Wavelength dispersive x-ray (WDX) spectroscopy was used to determine the AlN mole fraction (x ≈ 0.57–0.85) and dopant concentration (3 × 1018–1 × 1019 cm−3) in various series of Al x Ga1-x N layers grown on (0001) and (11–22) AlN/sapphire templates by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition. The polar samples exhibit hexagonal surface features with Ga-rich boundaries confirmed by WDX mapping. Surface morphology was examined by atomic force microscopy for samples grown with different disilane flow rates and the semipolar samples were shown to have smoother surfaces than their polar counterparts, with an approximate 15% reduction in roughness. Optical characterization using cathodoluminescence (CL) spectroscopy allowed analysis of near-band edge emission in the range 4.0–5.4 eV as well as various deep impurity transition peaks in the range 2.7–4.8 eV. The combination of spatially-resolved characterization techniques, including CL and WDX, has provided detailed information on how the crystal growth direction affects the alloy and dopant concentrations.</jats:p

    Scientific Perspectives, Feminist Standpoints, and Non-silly Relativism

    Defences of perspectival realism are motivated, in part, by an attempt to find a middle ground between the realist intuition that science seems to tell us a true story about the world, and the Kuhnian intuition that scientific knowledge is historically and culturally situated. The first intuition pulls us towards a traditional, absolutist scientific picture, and the second towards a relativist one. Thus, perspectival realism can be seen as an attempt to secure situated knowledge without entailing epistemic relativism. A very similar motivation is behind feminist standpoint theory, a view which aims to capture the idea that knowledge is socially situated, whilst retaining some kind of absolutism. Elsewhere I argue that the feminist project fails to achieve this balance; its commitment to situated knowledge unavoidably entails epistemic relativism (though of an unproblematic kind), which allows them to achieve all of their feminist goals. In this paper I will explore whether the same arguments apply to perspectival realism. And so I will be asking whether perspectival realism too is committed to an unproblematic kind of relativism, capable of achieving scientific goals; or, whether it succeeds in carving out a third view, between or beyond the relativism/absolutism dichotomy

    Impact of substrate on tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy: A comparison between field-distribution simulations and graphene measurements

    Tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS) has reached nanometer spatial resolution for measurements performed at ambient conditions and subnanometer resolution at ultrahigh vacuum. Super-resolution (beyond the tip apex diameter) TERS has been obtained mostly in the gap mode configuration, where a conductive substrate localizes the electric fields. Here we present experimental and theoretical TERS to explore the field distribution responsible for spectral enhancement. We use gold tips of 40 +/- 10 nm apex diameter to measure TERS on graphene, a spatially delocalized two-dimensional sample, sitting on different substrates: (i) glass, (ii) a thin layer of gold and (iii) a surface covered with 12 nm diameter gold spheres, for which 6 nm resolution is achieved at ambient conditions. The super-resolution is due to the field configuration resulting from the coupled tip-sample-substrate system, exhibiting a nontrivial spatial surface distribution. The field distribution and the symmetry selection rules are different for nongap versus gap mode configurations. This influences the overall enhancement which depends on the Raman mode symmetry and substrate structure

    Strong Ramsey games: drawing on an infinite board

    We consider the strong Ramsey-type game R(k)(H,ℵ0), played on the edge set of the infinite complete k-uniform hypergraph KkN. Two players, called FP (the first player) and SP (the second player), take turns claiming edges of K^k_N with the goal of building a copy of some finite predetermined k-uniform hypergraph H. The first player to build a copy of H wins. If no player has a strategy to ensure his win in finitely many moves, then the game is declared a draw. In this paper, we construct a 5-uniform hypergraph H such that R(5)(H,ℵ0) is a draw. This is in stark contrast to the corresponding finite game R(5)(H,n), played on the edge set of K5n. Indeed, using a classical game-theoretic argument known as \emph{strategy stealing} and a Ramsey-type argument, one can show that for every k-uniform hypergraph G, there exists an integer n0 such that FP has a winning strategy for R(k)(G,n) for every n≥n0

    A role of oligodendrocytes in information processing

    Myelinating oligodendrocytes enable fast propagation of action potentials along the ensheathed axons. In addition, oligodendrocytes play diverse non-canonical roles including axonal metabolic support and activity-dependent myelination. An open question remains whether myelination also contributes to information processing in addition to speeding up conduction velocity. Here, we analyze the role of myelin in auditory information processing using paradigms that are also good predictors of speech understanding in humans. We compare mice with different degrees of dysmyelination using acute multiunit recordings in the auditory cortex, in combination with behavioral readouts. We find complex alterations of neuronal responses that reflect fatigue and temporal acuity deficits. We observe partially discriminable but similar deficits in well myelinated mice in which glial cells cannot fully support axons metabolically. We suggest a model in which myelination contributes to sus- tained stimulus perception in temporally complex paradigms, with a role of metabolically active oligodendrocytes in cortical information processing
