Precursor Lesions of High-Grade Serous Ovarian Carcinoma: Morphological and Molecular Characteristics

    Get PDF
The lack of proven screening tools for early detection and the high mortality of ovarian serous carcinoma (OSC), particularly high grade, have focused attention on identifying putative precursor lesions with distinct morphological and molecular characteristics. The finding of occult invasive and intraepithelial fallopian tube carcinomas in prophylactically removed specimens from asymptomatic high-risk BRCA 1/2-mutation carriers supports the notion of an origin for OSC in the fallopian tube. The intraepithelial carcinomas have been referred to as serous intraepithelial carcinomas (STICs) but our own findings (unpublished data) and recent reports have drawn attention to a spectrum of changes that fall short of STICs that we have designated serous tubal intraepithelial lesions (STILs)

New spectrometer projects for challenging particle-gamma measurements of nuclear reactions

    Get PDF
Two new gamma spectrometer projects are under development, both with some challenging technical characteristics in common, one for the investigation of weakly bound nuclear beam reactions at near barrier energies, and the other for the measurement of double charge exchange reactions in the 15-70 MeV per nucleon range. The first one is being developed and tested at the IFUSP, and the other is going to be built and installed at the LNS, INFN, under the NUMEN collaboration. The main characteristics of the two projects are presented and discussed.Fundacao de Amparo a Pesquisa do Estado de Sao Paulo (FAPESP) 2016/04612-

Dysplastic Ichthyosis Uteri-like changes of the entire endometrium associated with a squamous cell carcinoma of the uterine cervix

Ichthyosis uteri is an exceedingly rare condition in which the entire surface of the endometrium is replaced by stratified squamous epithelium. Originally described as an endometrial response to iatrogenically-introduced caustic substances, similar changes have since been described in association with a variety of inflammatory conditions of the endometrium. We describe herein a heretofore undescribed example of a moderately differentiated squamous cell carcinoma of the uterine cervix associated with extensive ichthyosis uteri-like changes of the entire adjacent endometrium. Additionally, the squamous epithelium of the latter also showed multifocal changes diagnostic of a low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion. The potential genesis of this composite of findings is discussed, as is the neoplastic potential of ichthyosis uteri. It is concluded that a squamous cell carcinoma of the cervix extended proximally into the endometrium, and that there was a colonization of a pre-existing ichthyosis uteri by associated human papillomavirus. The possibility of significant cervical pathology should be considered when plaques of squamous epithelium with low grade dysplastic changes are identified in an endometrial biopsy or curettage

No association between a candidate TCF7L2 variant and risk of breast or ovarian cancer

<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>TCF7L2 is a transcription factor involved in Wnt/β-catenin signaling which has a variant known to be associated with risk of Type 2 diabetes and, in some studies, with risk of certain cancers, including familial breast cancer. No studies of ovarian cancer have been reported to date.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Two clinic-based case-control studies at the Mayo Clinic were assessed including 798 breast cancer cases, 843 breast cancer controls, 391 ovarian cancer cases, and 458 ovarian cancer controls. Genotyping at <it>TCF7L2 </it>rs12255372 used a 5' endonuclease assay, and statistical analysis used logistic regression among participants as a whole and among <it>a priori</it>-defined subsets.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>No associations with risk of breast or ovarian cancer were observed (ordinal model, p = 0.62 and p = 0.75, respectively). In addition, no associations were observed among sub-groups defined by age, BMI, family history, stage, grade, histology, or tumor behavior.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Although the biology of the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway and prior association between rs12255372 and numerous phenotypes warranted examination of this <it>TCF7L2 </it>SNP, no compelling evidence for association with breast or ovarian cancer was observed.</p

Breast-feeding and risk of epithelial ovarian cancer.

Among women who have had the opportunity to breast-feed, ever breast-feeding and increasing durations of episodes of breast-feeding for each breast-fed child are associated with a decrease in the risk of ovarian cancer independent of numbers of births, which may be strongest for the endometrioid subtype

3-benzyl-6-isobutylpiperazin-2,5-dione [cyclo(leucylphenylalanyl)], 3-isobutylpiperazin-2,5-dione [cyclo(-leucylglycyl)] and 3-(sec-butyl-)-6-isobutyl-piperazine-2,5-dione [cyclo(leucylisoleucine)] have been obtained by cyclization of methyl esters of tert-butyloxycarbonyl derivatives of dipeptides, for the synthesis of which both carbodiimide-promoted peptide bond formation and the mixed anhydride method were used.3-бензил-6-изобутилпиперазин-2,5-дион [цикло(лейцилфенилаланил)], 3-изобутилпиперазин-2,5-дион [цикло(лейцилглицил)] и 3-(втор-бутил-)-6-изобутил-пиперазин-2,5-дион [цикло(лейцилизолейцин)] получены циклизацией метиловых эфиров трет-бутилоксикарбонильных производных дипептидов, для синтеза которых был использован как карбодиимидный метод образования пептидной связи, так и метод смешанных ангидридов
