A virtual myoelectric prosthesis training system capable of providing instructions on hand operations
This article proposes a virtual hand and a virtual training system for controlling the MyoBock—the most commonly used myoelectric prosthetic hand worldwide. As the virtual hand is controlled using the method also adopted for the MyoBock hand, the proposed system provides upper-limb amputees with operation sensibilities similar to those experienced in MyoBock control. It can also display an additional virtual hand for the provision of instructions on hand operation, such as the recommended posture for object grasping and the trajectory desirable to reach a target. In virtual hand control experiments conducted with an amputee to evaluate the proposed virtual hand’s operability, the subject successfully performed stable opening and closing with high discrimination rates (89.3±6.65%), thanks to the virtual hand’s incorporation of the MyoBock’s operational characteristics. A training experiment using the proposed system was also conducted with eight healthy participants over a period of 5 days. The participants were asked to perform the box and block test using the MyoBock hand in a real environment on the first and final days. The results showed that the number of blocks transported in 1 min significantly increased and that the participants using the instruction virtual hand changed the orientation of the hand approaching blocks from vertical to lateral. The outcomes of the experiment indicate that the proposed system can be used to improve MyoBock hand control operation both quantitatively and qualitatively.This work was partially supported by a Grant-in-Aid for Young Scientists B Number 26730111 and a Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research C Number 26462242
X-ray study of ferroic octupole order producing anomalous Hall effect
放射光でついに見えた磁気オクタポール --熱を電気に変える新たな担い手--. 京都大学プレスリリース. 2021-09-27.Recently found anomalous Hall, Nernst, magnetooptical Kerr, and spin Hall effects in the antiferromagnets Mn₃X (X = Sn, Ge) are attracting much attention for spintronics and energy harvesting. Since these materials are antiferromagnets, the origin of these functionalities is expected to be different from that of conventional ferromagnets. Here, we report the observation of ferroic order of magnetic octupole in Mn₃Sn by X-ray magnetic circular dichroism, which is only predicted theoretically so far. The observed signals are clearly decoupled with the behaviors of uniform magnetization, indicating that the present X-ray magnetic circular dichroism is not arising from the conventional magnetization. We have found that the appearance of this anomalous signal coincides with the time reversal symmetry broken cluster magnetic octupole order. Our study demonstrates that the exotic material functionalities are closely related to the multipole order, which can produce unconventional cross correlation functionalities
Majorana-fermion origin of the planar thermal Hall effect in the Kitaev magnet α-RuCl₃
磁性絶縁体におけるマヨラナ粒子の決定的証拠 --トポロジカル量子コンピューター実現に向けて前進--. 京都大学プレスリリース. 2024-03-14.The field-induced quantum-disordered state of layered honeycomb magnet α-RuCl₃ is a prime candidate for Kitaev spin liquids hosting Majorana fermions and non-Abelian anyons. Recent observations of anomalous planar thermal Hall effect demonstrate a topological edge mode, but whether it originates from Majorana fermions or bosonic magnons remains controversial. Here, we distinguish these origins from combined low-temperature measurements of high-resolution specific heat and thermal Hall conductivity with rotating magnetic fields within the honeycomb plane. A distinct closure of the low-energy bulk gap is observed for the fields in the Ru-Ru bond direction, and the gap opens rapidly when the field is tilted. Notably, this change occurs concomitantly with the sign reversal of the Hall effect. General discussions of topological bands show that this is the hallmark of an angle rotation–induced topological transition of fermions, providing conclusive evidence for the Majorana-fermion origin of the thermal Hall effect in α-RuCl₃

Clinical significance of disease-specific MYD88 mutations in circulating DNA in primary central nervous system lymphoma
Recent sequencing studies demonstrated the MYD88 L265P mutation in more than 70% of primary central nervous system lymphomas (PCNSL), and the clinical significance of this mutation has been proposed as diagnostic and prognostic markers in PCNSL. In contrast, mutational analyses using cell-free DNAs have been reported in a variety of systemic lymphomas. To investigate how sensitively the MYD88 L265P mutation can be identified in cell-free DNA from PCNSL patients, we carried out droplet digital PCR (ddPCR) and targeted deep sequencing (TDS) in 14 consecutive PCNSL patients from whom paired tumor-derived DNA and cell-free DNA was available at diagnosis. The MYD88 L265P mutation was found in tumor-derived DNA from all 14 patients (14/14, 100%). In contrast, among 14 cell-free DNAs evaluated by ddPCR (14/14) and TDS (13/14), the MYD88 L265P mutation was detected in eight out of 14 (ddPCR) and in 0 out of 13 (TDS) samples, implying dependence on the detection method. After chemotherapy, the MYD88 L265P mutation in cell-free DNAs was traced in five patients; unexpectedly, the mutations disappeared after chemotherapy was given, and they remained undetectable in all patients. These observations suggest that ddPCR can sensitively detect the MYD88 L265P mutation in cell-free DNA and could be used as non-invasive diagnostics, but may not be applicable for monitoring minimal residual diseases in PCNSL
