The anomalous behavior of coefficient of normal restitution in the oblique impact
The coefficient of normal restitution in an oblique impact is theoretically
studied. Using a two-dimensional lattice models for an elastic disk and an
elastic wall, we demonstrate that the coefficient of normal restitution can
exceed one and has a peak against the incident angle in our simulation.
Finally, we explain these phenomena based upon the phenomenological theory of

Improved shaping approach to the preliminary design of low-thrust trajectories
This paper presents a general framework for the development of shape-based approaches to low-thrust trajectory design. A novel shaping method, based on a three-dimensional description of the trajectory in spherical coordinates, is developed within this general framework. Both the exponential sinusoid and the inverse polynomial shaping are demonstrated to be particular two-dimensional cases of the spherical one. The pseudoequinoctial shaping is revisited within the new framework, and the nonosculating nature of the pseudoequinoctial elements is analyzed. A two step approach is introduced to solve the time of flight constraint, related to the design of low-thrust arcs with boundary constraints for both spherical and pseudoequinoctial shaping. The solution derived from the shaping approach is improved with a feedback linear-quadratic controller and compared against a direct collocation method based on finite elements in time. The new shaping approach and the combination of shaping and linear-quadratic controller are tested on three case studies: a mission to Mars, a mission to asteroid 1989ML, a mission to comet Tempel-1, and a mission to Neptune
Simulation of cohesive head-on collisions of thermally activated nanoclusters
Impact phenomena of nanoclusters subject to thermal fluctuations are
numerically investigated. From the molecular dynamics simulation for colliding
two identical clusters, it is found that the restitution coefficient for
head-on collisions has a peak at a colliding speed due to the competition
between the cohesive interaction and the repulsive interaction of colliding
clusters. Some aspects of the collisions can be understood by the theory by
Brilliantov {\it et al.} (Phys. Rev. E {\bf 76}, 051302 (2007)), but many new
aspects are found from the simulation. In particular, we find that there are
some anomalous rebounds in which the restitution coefficient is larger than
unity. The phase diagrams of rebound processes against impact speed and the

Hydrodynamics of driven granular gases
Hydrodynamic equations for granular gases driven by the Fokker-Planck
operator are derived. Transport coefficients appeared in Navier-Stokes order

The Japanese space gravitational wave antenna: DECIGO
DECi-hertz Interferometer Gravitational wave Observatory (DECIGO) is the future Japanese space gravitational wave antenna. DECIGO is expected to open a new window of observation for gravitational wave astronomy especially between 0.1 Hz and 10 Hz, revealing various mysteries of the universe such as dark energy, formation mechanism of supermassive black holes, and inflation of the universe. The pre-conceptual design of DECIGO consists of three drag-free spacecraft, whose relative displacements are measured by a differential Fabry-Perot Michelson interferometer. We plan to launch two missions, DECIGO pathfinder and pre-DECIGO first and finally DECIGO in 2024
DECIGO pathfinder
DECIGO pathfinder (DPF) is a milestone satellite mission for DECIGO (DECi-hertz Interferometer Gravitational wave Observatory), which is a future space gravitational wave antenna. DECIGO is expected to provide fruitful insights into the universe, particularly about dark energy, the formation mechanism of supermassive black holes and the inflation of the universe. Since DECIGO will be an extremely challenging mission, which will be formed by three drag-free spacecraft with 1000 km separation, it is important to increase the technical feasibility of DECIGO before its planned launch in 2024.
