Diffraction of a plane wave by a three-dimensional corner
By the superposition of the conical solution for the diffraction of a plane pulse by a three dimensional corner, the solution for a general incident plane wave is constructed. A numerical program is presented for the computation of the pressure distribution on the surface due to an incident plane wave of any wave form and at any incident angle. Numerical examples are presented to show the pressure signature at several points on the surface due to incident wave with a front shock wave, two shock waves in succession, or a compression wave with same peak pressure. The examples show that when the distance of a point on the surface from the edges or the vertex is comparable to the distance for the front pressure raise to reach the maximum, the peak pressure at that point can be much less than that given by a regular reflection, because the diffracted wave front arrives at that point prior to the arrival of the peak incident wave
Adversarial Learning of Semantic Relevance in Text to Image Synthesis
We describe a new approach that improves the training of generative
adversarial nets (GANs) for synthesizing diverse images from a text input. Our
approach is based on the conditional version of GANs and expands on previous
work leveraging an auxiliary task in the discriminator. Our generated images
are not limited to certain classes and do not suffer from mode collapse while
semantically matching the text input. A key to our training methods is how to
form positive and negative training examples with respect to the class label of
a given image. Instead of selecting random training examples, we perform
negative sampling based on the semantic distance from a positive example in the
class. We evaluate our approach using the Oxford-102 flower dataset, adopting
the inception score and multi-scale structural similarity index (MS-SSIM)
metrics to assess discriminability and diversity of the generated images. The
empirical results indicate greater diversity in the generated images,
especially when we gradually select more negative training examples closer to a
positive example in the semantic space

Densely distributed and real-time scour hole monitoring using piezoelectric rod sensors
This study aims to validate a piezoelectric driven-rod scour monitoring system that can sense changes in scour depth along the entire rod at its instrumented location. The proposed sensor is a polymeric slender rod with a thin strip of polyvinylidene fluoride that runs through its midline. Extraction of the fundamental frequency allows the direct calculation of the exposed length (or scour depth) of the slender rod undergoing fluid flow excitation. First, laboratory validation in dry conditions is presented. Second, hydrodynamic testing of the sensor system in a soil-bed flume is discussed. Each rod was installed using a three-dimensional-printed footing designed for ease of installation and stabilization during testing. The sensors were installed in a layout designed to capture symmetric scour conditions around a scaled pier. In order to analyze the system out of steady-state conditions, water velocity was increased in stages during testing to induce different degrees of scour. As ambient water flow excited the portion of the exposed rods, the embedded piezoelectric element outputted a time-varying voltage signal. Different methods were then employed to extract the fundamental frequency of each rod, and the results were compared. Further testing was also performed to characterize the relationship between frequency outputs and flow velocity, which were previously thought to be independent. In general, the proposed driven-rod scour monitoring system successfully captured changing frequencies under varied flow conditions
Preferential binding of HIF-1 to transcriptionally active loci determines cell-type specific response to hypoxia
ChIP-chip and microarray expression studies show that, in response to hypoxia, HIF-1 preferentially binds to and up-regulates already active genes
A new complexity bound for the least-squares problem
AbstractFor a least-squares problem of m degree polynomial regression with n measured values (n ≥ m + 1), the traditional methods need O(n2m) arithmetic operations. We prove that the arithmetic complexity of this problem does not exceed O(nlog22m)
The Orphan Nuclear Estrogen Receptor–Related Receptor α (Errα) Is Expressed Throughout Osteoblast Differentiation and Regulates Bone Formation in Vitro
The orphan nuclear estrogen receptor–related receptor α (ERRα), is expressed by many cell types, but is very highly expressed by osteoblastic cells in which it transactivates at least one osteoblast-associated gene, osteopontin. To study the putative involvement of ERRα in bone, we first assessed its expression in rat calvaria (RC) in vivo and in RC cells in vitro. ERRα mRNA and protein were expressed at all developmental stages from early osteoprogenitors to bone-forming osteoblasts, but protein was most abundant in mature cuboidal osteoblasts. To assess a functional role for ERRα in osteoblast differentiation and bone formation, we blocked its expression by antisense oligonucleotides in either proliferating or differentiating RC cell cultures and found inhibition of cell growth and a proliferation-independent inhibition of differentiation. On the other hand, ERRα overexpression in RC cells increased differentiation and maturation of progenitors to mature bone-forming cells. Our findings show that ERRα is highly expressed throughout the osteoblast developmental sequence and plays a physiological role in differentiation and bone formation at both proliferation and differentiation stages. In addition, we found that manipulation of receptor levels in the absence of known ligand is a fruitful approach for functional analysis of this orphan receptor and identification of potential target genes
