    The preparation of BP single crystals by high pressure flux method

    Single crystals of BP, a III-V compound semiconductor, were obtained by the high pressure flux method. Cu3P and Ni12P5 powders were used as the flux, and mixed with BP powder. Two kinds of mixtures were prepared: (1) 1.8g (BP) + 35 G (Cu3P) and (2) 1.7 g (BP) + 25 g (Ni12P5). They were compressed into pellets, heated at 1300 C for 24 h in an induction furnace under a pressure of 1 MPa using Ar-P2 gas, and slowly cooled to room temperature. In case (1), BP single crystals grew along the (III) plane, and in case (2) they grew as an aggregate of crystallites. The cathodoluminescence spectra of the synthetic BP crystals showed peaks near 680 nm (1.82 eV) for case (1), and 500 nm (2.47 eV) for case (2). By using the high pressure flux method conventional sized crystals were obtained in a relatively short time

    Thermoelectric Properties of Silicon Carbide Nanowires with Nitrogen Dopants and Vacancies

    The thermoelectric properties of cubic zincblend silicon carbide nanowires (SiCNWs) with nitrogen impurities and vacancies along [111] direction are theoretically studied by means of atomistic simulations. It is found that the thermoelectric figure of merit ZT of SiCNWs can be significantly enhanced by doping N impurities together with making Si vacancies. Aiming at obtaining a large ZT, we study possible energetically stable configurations, and disclose that, when N dopants locate at the center, a small number of Si vacancies at corners are most favored for n-type nanowires, while a large number of Si vacancies spreading into the flat edge sites are most favored for p-type nanowires. For the SiCNW with a diameter of 1.1 nm and a length of 4.6 nm, the ZT value for the n-type is shown capable of reaching 1.78 at 900K. The conditions to get higher ZT values for longer SiCNWs are also addressed.Comment: 9 pages, 10 figure

    Abortion in the United States' bible belt: organizing for power and empowerment

    Over the last 30 years, conservative power in the United States, financed and organized by Christian fundamentalist sects, the Catholic Church, and conservative corporate and political leadership, has become more threatening and potentially destabilizing of progressive democratic principles and practices. Powerful interlocking political, financial and social forces are arrayed against women in many Southern and Western states. They are having destructive effects on women's ability to control their fertility and maintain bodily integrity and health. Poor women and women of color are disproportionately affected by restrictions on abortion services. Strategically developed interventions must be initiated and managed at every level in these localities. It is urgent to coordinate and empower individuals, multiple organizations and communities to engender effective changes in attitudes, norms, behavior and policies that will enable women to obtain reproductive health services, including abortion care. This paper describes contextual factors that continue to decimate U.S. women's right to health and, then, describes a community organizing-social action project in a number of US' states aimed at reversing the erosion of women's right to have or not to have children

    Self-processes in interdependent relationships: Partner affirmation and the Michelangelo Phenomenon

    This essay reviews theory and research regarding the "Michelangelo phenomenon," which describes the manner in which close partners shape one another's dispositions, values, and behavioral tendencies. Individuals are more likely to exhibit movement toward their ideal selves to the degree that their partners exhibit affirming perception and behavior, exhibiting confidence in the self 's capacity and enacting behaviors that elicit key features of the self 's ideal. In turn, movement towards the ideal self yields enhanced personal well-being and couple well-being. We review empirical evidence regarding this phenomenon and discuss self and partner variables that contribute to the process. Ā© John Benjamins Publishing Company

    The Prosocial Versus Proself Power Holder: How Power Influences Sacrifice in Romantic Relationships

    Romantic partners often have to sacrifice their interests to benefit their partner or to maintain the relationship. In the present work, we investigated whether relative power within the relationship plays an important role in determining the extent to which partners are likely to sacrifice. Drawing from both classic theories and recent research on power, we tested two competing predictions on the relationship between power and sacrifice in romantic relationships. We tested whether (a) power is negatively related to sacrifice and (b) power is positively related to sacrifice. Furthermore, we also explored whether the association between power and sacrifice is moderated by commitment and inclusion of the other in the self. To test our hypotheses, we used different methodologies, including questionnaires, diary studies, and videotaped interactions. Results across the five studies (N = 1,088) consistently supported the hypothesis that power is negatively related to tendencies to sacrifice in close relationships

    Education policy as an act of white supremacy: whiteness, critical race theory and education reform

    The paper presents an empirical analysis of education policy in England that is informed by recent developments in US critical theory. In particular, I draw on ā€˜whiteness studiesā€™ and the application of Critical Race Theory (CRT). These perspectives offer a new and radical way of conceptualising the role of racism in education. Although the US literature has paid little or no regard to issues outside North America, I argue that a similar understanding of racism (as a multifaceted, deeply embedded, often taken-for-granted aspect of power relations) lies at the heart of recent attempts to understand institutional racism in the UK. Having set out the conceptual terrain in the first half of the paper, I then apply this approach to recent changes in the English education system to reveal the central role accorded the defence (and extension) of race inequity. Finally, the paper touches on the question of racism and intentionality: although race inequity may not be a planned and deliberate goal of education policy neither is it accidental. The patterning of racial advantage and inequity is structured in domination and its continuation represents a form of tacit intentionality on the part of white powerholders and policy makers. It is in this sense that education policy is an act of white supremacy. Following others in the CRT tradition, therefore, the paperā€™s analysis concludes that the most dangerous form of ā€˜white supremacyā€™ is not the obvious and extreme fascistic posturing of small neonazi groups, but rather the taken-for-granted routine privileging of white interests that goes unremarked in the political mainstream

    An unclear self leads to poor mental health: Self-concept confusion mediates the association of loneliness with depression

    Past research has established that loneliness is associated with both self-concept confusion and depression. The present work ties these disparate lines of research together by demonstrating that self-concept confusion mediates the relationship between loneliness and depression. Three studies, one cross-sectional and two longitudinal, supported this hypothesis. Moreover, the model was supported both in samples of dating and married couples and in samples of noncouples. This research contributes to a greater understanding of why people who feel socially disconnected have poor mental health. Understanding this mechanism has important implications for strategies targeting the early prevention of depression and improving mental health outcomes

    From Ideal to Practice and Back Again: Beginning Teachers Teaching for Social Justice

    The five authors of this article designed a multicase study to follow recent graduates of an elementary preservice teacher education program into their beginning teaching placements and explore the ways in which they enacted social justice curricula. The authors highlight the stories of three beginning teachers, honoring the plurality of their conceptions of social justice teaching and the resiliency they exhibited in translating social justice ideals into viable pedagogy. They also discuss the struggles the teachers faced when enacting social justice curricula and the tenuous connection they perceived between their conceptions and their practices. The authors emphasize that such struggles are inevitable and end the article with recommendations for ways in which teacher educators can prepare beginning teachers for the uncertain journey of teaching for social justice

    Measurement of the spin and magnetic moment of 23Al

    For the first time, we obtained the g factor for the ground state of 23Al by use of a -NMR measurement. 23Al has a small proton separation energy and is a potential proton-halo candidate. The obtained g factor, |g|=1.557Ā±0.088, clearly shows the spin and parity, J=5/2+, for 23Al, which is the same as that of its mirror partner, 23Ne. The possible nuclear structure of 23Al is also discussed
