    Studies on combining ability and gene action for yield and quality traits in Baby corn (Zea mays L.)

    An investigation was carried out to assess the combining ability and nature of gene action in baby corn (Zea mays L.) genotypes, by making crosses of eight inbred lines namely, HKI 3209, SML 1, EC 595979, CM 128, VQL 1, G 18 seq C5 F 76-2-2-1-1-2-BBB, HKI 209, in diallel mating design (without reciprocal crosses) by following Griffing Model–I and Method–II during rabi season 2013-14 at the experimental farm of BAC, Sabour, Bhagalpur (Bihar). The crosses were evaluated in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) to assess the combining ability and nature of gene action. Based on general combining ability, parents CM 128 and VQL 1 were best parent forbreeding programme for yield and quality improvement. The specific combining ability also indicates that hybrid CM128 x VQL1 was best specific combiner for baby corn yield (4.11q/ha), fodder yield (50.91q/ha) as well as for better quality. The crosses CM 128 x HKI 209 recorded the high mean (7.35%) and SCA effects (2.57 ºBrix) for quality traits. The gene action analysis also revealed preponderance of non-additive gene action for yield and its contributing characters

    Assessment of the accuracy of MRI in differentiating benign and malignant lesion by different intralesional tissue signal characteristics

    Background:Despite the diversity associated with soft tissue tumour development, all diagnosis carry similar symptoms and treatment options. By systematically using clinical history, lesion localisation, mineralisation on radiographs and signal intensity characteristics on MR images, one can determine the diagnosis for the subset of determinate lesion that have characteristic clinical and imaging features and narrow the differential diagnosis for lesions that demonstrate indeterminate characteristics. Material & Methods:The present retrospective study was conducted at department of Department of Radiology at MRI Centre, M.B. Govt. Hospital, Udaipur. The study duration was September 2012 to March, 2015. The study group of 50 patients, consisted of mainly patients from different parts of Rajasthan and also some from the states like Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh. Results: In the present study, in demographic study youngest age was 6 months female with angiofibroma and oldest was 79 years male with Leiomyosarcoma. Most common age group over all was 31 to 40 years [24%]. Amongst malignant and benign most common age group was again 31- 40 years, 8% in benign and 16% in malignant. Benign lesions were more common in females and malignant were more common in males.Out of total study participants 50 patients, 32 cases were malignant and 18 cases were benign.Most tumors were hypointense on T1W study[58%] and hyperintense on T2W images[86%]. Heterogenous hyperintensity on T2W images was more common in malignant lesions than in benign. Sensitivity and specificity of this characteristic predicting malignancy is as follows. Statistics show that heterogenous hyperintensity has higher sensitivity, specificity, PPV and NPV in predicting malignancy and p value suggests that there is significant difference among the malignant and benign lesions. [Chi = 20.91; p = 0.0001].Conclusion:We concluded from the present study that MRI is the modality of choice for evaluation of soft tissue tumors along with highly sensitive in detection of soft tissue tumors almost 100%. MRI has an important role in determining the origin of these lesions and in defining their extent and relation to adjacent structures. However, it must be emphasized that MRI cannot completely distinguish benign from malignant lesions when radiologic evaluation is non-specific

    Hypothyroidism among Menopausal Women: A Review

    Introduction: Thyroid diseases are public health problem worldwide with hypothyroidism more being more common. Its risk increases during menopause due to hormonal transition among women. There is no Indian guideline related to screening among this population.Methods: Review was undertaken in multiple ways including internet and library. Studies published in English were included.Results: A total of 8 studies were included in the review. The prevalence of hypothyroidism ranged from about 7% to 24% in India and globally across the world.Conclusion: The prevalence is high among menopausal women. There is need for further research into associated factors leading to high risk among these women. Screening guidelines need to be formulated in India for hypothyroidism among menopausal women

    Response of coconut seedlings to elevated CO2 and high temperature in drought and high nutrient conditions

    The interaction effect of climate change variables elevated CO2 and elevated temperature (ET) with drought and nutrients on growth and development of coconut seedlings was studied in an open top chamber (OTC) at Central Plantation Crops Research Institute (CPCRI), Kasaragod. Seedlings were exposed to ambient (normal CO2 and temperature), elevated CO2 (550 and 700 ppm), ET (3 °C above ambient) and ET + elevated CO2 (550 ppm CO2 + 3 °C). In each OTC, a set of seedlings were subjected to drought (50% FC) and another set was maintained at 150 per cent recommended dose of fertilizer (RDF). Seedlings in elevated CO2 treatments accumulated significantly higher biomass. It was 1.13 and 1.98 kg seedling-1 with 550 and 700 ppm CO2 respectively as against 1.10 in ambient treatment. It was the least in ET treatment (0.91). The stomatal conductance (gs) and transpiration (Tr) of plants grown under elevated CO2 was reduced without affecting the photosynthesis. As a consequence, the whole plant WUE of coconut seedlings grown under elevated CO2 was high both under control and drought condition. The WUE significantly reduced both in high temperature and drought stressed plants.     Prevalence of Color Blindness in Undergraduates of Kathmandu University

    Introduction: Color blindness is X-linked recessive inherited disorder that occurs mostly in males and is transmitted through females. Many people with color blindness may remain undetected. Thus the present study aims to evaluate the incidence of color blindness among undergraduates of Kathmandu University. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 825 undergraduates, aged 17-25 years, from June to August 2018, in Kathmandu University, Kavre, Nepal. The Ishihara plates were used to evaluate the color vision of students under natural day light condition. Results: Study revealed that 24 (2.9%) undergraduates were color blind which include 24 male (5%) and no female. Among the color blind, five (20.3%), three (12.5%), two (8.33%) and 14 (58.33%) males were the victims of deuteranomaly, deuteranopia, protanomalia and total color blindness respectively. Color blindness is prevalent among the Brahmin 10 (3.9%), followed by Chettri 10 (2.72%) and Newar 4 (2.24%). Conclusions: Prevalence of color blindness is found to be higher in males 24 (5%) than females 0 (0%). Total color blindness is the most prevalent in our study. Screening enables the students to become aware of limitations and devise ways of overcoming them

    Growth and Characterization of Single Crystals ofl-Histidine Hydrochloride Monohydrate for Nonlinear Optical Applications

    In the present study, we have focused on the growth of semi-organic single crystals, as they play a vital role in the generation of a terahertz pulse and its potential applications. The single crystals ofl-histidine hydrochloride monohydrate (LMHCL) were grown by slow evaporation solution growth by using deionized water as a solvent in a controlled atmosphere. Good quality crystals of the required size were obtained within 2 weeks. To estimate the lattice dimensions and get the structural information, powder x-ray diffraction (PXRD) study was performed in which we have found that the crystal belongs to the orthorhombic crystal system with space groupP2(1)2(1)2(1). The functional groups and the corresponding vibrational mode were confirmed using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and Raman spectroscopy, respectively. To study the optical properties UV-Vis transmission spectrum and photoluminescence (PL) were recorded. It was observed that the single crystal has a high value of transmission over a long range of wavelength which signifies that the crystal is a good candidate for nonlinear optical (NLO) applications. The UV cut-off wavelength is found to be 236 nm. The grown single crystals were studied by time-domain terahertz spectroscopy (THz-TDS) for photonic applications and the refractive indices were calculated and it is found that the refractive index is nearly equal to 3.4

    Substitutional p-type doping in NbS2 -MoS2 lateral heterostructures grown by MOCVD

    Monolayer MoS2 has attracted significant attention owing to its excellent performance as an n-type semiconductor from the transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) family. It is however strongly desired to develop controllable synthesis methods for 2D p-type MoS2, which is crucial for complementary logic applications but remains difficult. In this work, high-quality NbS2-MoS2 lateral heterostructures are synthesized by one-step metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) together with monolayer MoS2 substitutionally doped by Nb, resulting in a p-type doped behavior. The heterojunction shows a p-type transfer characteristic with a high on/off current ratio of approximate to 10(4), exceeding previously reported values. The band structure through the NbS2-MoS2 heterojunction is investigated by density functional theory (DFT) and quantum transport simulations. This work provides a scalable approach to synthesize substitutionally doped TMDC materials and provides an insight into the interface between 2D metals and semiconductors in lateral heterostructures, which is imperative for the development of next-generation nanoelectronics and highly integrated devices

    Plant-Based Antioxidant Extracts and Compounds in the Management of Oral Cancer

    Oral cancer continues to be a leading cause of death worldwide, and its prevalence is particularly high in developing countries, where people chew tobacco and betel nut on a regular basis. Radiation-, chemo-, targeted-, immuno-, and hormone-based therapies along with surgery are commonly used as part of a treatment plan. However, these treatments frequently result in various unwanted short- to long-term side effects. As a result, there is an urgent need to develop treatment options for oral cancer that have little or no adverse effects. Numerous bioactive compounds derived from various plants have recently attracted attention as therapeutic options for cancer treatment. Antioxidants found in medicinal plants, such as vitamins E, C, and A, reduce damage to the mucosa by neutralizing free radicals found in various oral mucosal lesions. Phytochemicals found in medicinal plants have the potential to modulate cellular signalling pathways that alter the cellular defence mechanisms to protect normal cells from reactive oxygen species (ROS) and induce apoptosis in cancer cells. This review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of various medicinal plants and phytoconstituents that have shown the potential to be used as oral cancer therapeutics

    Leishmania donovani: Immunostimulatory Cellular Responses of Membrane and Soluble Protein Fractions of Splenic Amastigotes in Cured Patient and Hamsters

    Visceral leishmaniasis (VL), caused by the intracellular parasite Leishmania donovani, L. chagasi and L. infantum is characterized by defective cell-mediated immunity (CMI) and is usually fatal if not treated properly. An estimated 350 million people worldwide are at risk of acquiring infection with Leishmania parasites with approximately 500,000 cases of VL being reported each year. In the absence of an efficient and cost-effective antileishmanial drug, development of an appropriate long-lasting vaccine against VL is the need of the day. In VL, the development of a CMI, capable of mounting Th1-type of immune responses, play an important role as it correlate with recovery from and resistance to disease. Resolution of infection results in lifelong immunity against the disease which indicates towards the feasibility of a vaccine against the disease. Most of the vaccination studies in Leishmaniasis have been focused on promastigote- an infective stage of parasite with less exploration of pathogenic amastigote form, due to the cumbersome process of its purified isolation. In the present study, we have isolated and purified splenic amastigotes of L. donovani, following the traditional protocol with slight modification. These were fractionated into five membranous and soluble subfractions each i.e MAF1-5 and SAF1-5 and were subjected for evaluation of their ability to induce cellular responses. Out of five sub-fractions from each of membrane and soluble, only four viz. MAF2, MAF3, SAF2 and SAF3 were observed to stimulate remarkable lymphoproliferative, IFN-γ, IL-12 responses and Nitric Oxide production, in Leishmania-infected cured/exposed patients and hamsters. Results suggest the presence of Th-1 type immunostimulatory molecules in these sub-fractions which may further be exploited for developing a successful subunit vaccine from the less explored pathogenic stage against VL
