    EMEEDP: Enhanced Multi-hop Energy Efficient Distributed Protocol for Heterogeneous Wireless Sensor Network

    In WSN (Wireless Sensor Network) every sensor node sensed the data and transmit it to the CH (Cluster head) or BS (Base Station). Sensors are randomly deployed in unreachable areas, where battery replacement or battery charge is not possible. For this reason, Energy conservation is the important design goal while developing a routing and distributed protocol to increase the lifetime of WSN. In this paper, an enhanced energy efficient distributed protocol for heterogeneous WSN have been reported. EMEEDP is proposed for heterogeneous WSN to increase the lifetime of the network. An efficient algorithm is proposed in the form of flowchart and based on various clustering equation proved that the proposed work accomplishes longer lifetime with improved QOS parameters parallel to MEEP. A WSN implemented and tested using Raspberry Pi devices as a base station, temperature sensors as a node and xively.com as a cloud.     A Study On The Clinical Outcome In Ischemic Stroke Patient With Hyperglycemia In A Tertiary Care Hospital Of Southern Bihar

    Background: Previous research has been able to establish an association between diabetes/ increased sugar levels and increased mortality, length of hospital stay, readmission rates, and poorer functional and rehabilitation outcomes after stroke. The present study was done to assess the link of the blood sugar levels with acute stroke and thereby evaluate the severity and prognosis of stroke with reference to hyperglycemia.Materials and method: The blood sugar and HbA1C levels at the time of admission were recorded. The severity of stroke for each patient is calculated based on NIH stroke scale, which takes the clinical findings in to account and each criteria awarded specific points. The Student's t-test was applied for the comparing the mean values, Chi-square test for the comparison of frequencies and Spearman’s correlation test for correlation between the 2 variables.Results: Maximum number of the subjects in the present study belonged to the age group of 51-60 years with predominance among the males. High sugar levels as assessed by Random blood sugar and HbA1C levels was associated with increased severity of stroke as per NIH stroke class severity and poor functional outcome as well as the mortality. Conclusion: There is a linear correlation between admission day hyperglycemia and the severity of ischemic stroke. There is a good correlation between glucose level at the time of admission and the ischemic stroke outcome.   Keywords: Diabetes mellitus, HbA1C level, Blood sugar level, Ischemic Strok

    Self-esteem and wellbeing among tribal and non-tribal adolescent girls

     Background: Adolescent period reports experiences of changes in physical, mental and social functions. Self-esteem has a significant contribution to wellbeing and depression in adolescent. The aim and objective was to evaluate self-esteem and wellbeing among adolescent girls with tribal and non-tribal ethnicity.Methods: The cross-sectional study was conducted in which 2 schools and 1 institute selected using purposive sampling. The total enumeration method of random sampling was obtained to select participants. Total of 360 adolescent girls (180 each tribal and non-tribal adolescent girls) were selected for the study. Socio-demographic datasheet, adolescent wellbeing scale and Rosenberg self-esteem scale were used for the assessment.Results: The adolescent girls with tribal ethnicity found to have low self-esteem and wellbeing (depressive) compared to adolescent girls with non-tribal ethnicity. 33.9% of tribal adolescent girls and 13.3% of non-tribal adolescent girls found in depressive dimension.Conclusions: The deliberate efforts to build self-esteem and wellbeing among tribal adolescent girls can help to promote their mental health. The mental health promotion and wellness programs specific to ethnicity and culture requires to uphold the wellbeing of the adolescent girls with tribal ethnicity

    Effect of Polyethylene Glycol Induced Water Stress on Physiological and Biochemical Responses in Pigeonpea (Cajanus cajan L. Millsp.)

    Water deficit induced by Polyethylene glycol (PEG) affect physiological and biochemical changes in pigeonpea. The plants were subjected to two progressive stresses: moderate (-0.51 MPa) and severe (-1.22 MPa) respectively. The water stress condition was created by irrigating 14 days old grown seedling pot with PEG nutrient solution and decreasing the osmotic potential -0.04 MPa regularly. Relative water content (RWC) content was significantly reduced under water stress condition. Increase in the free proline content during water stress condition suggests that proline is one of the common compatible osmolytes under water stress condition. The genotype exhibited lower accumulation of catalase (CAT) and increased activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and Peroxidase (POD) under stressed condition. The present data suggest a relation between proline content and water stress and a well developed antioxidant defense mechanism activated during water stress

    Discontinuation of modern contraception methods due to side effects and method failure in India: an analysis using reproductive calendar data

    Background: Contraceptive discontinuation for reasons other than the desire to get pregnant is a significant public health concern. This study aimed to understand the elaborated role of side effects and method failure behind modern reversible contraception method discontinuation among married women aged 15-49 years in India.Methods: The analysis was based on 142992 episodes of contraceptive use contributed by 90414 married women aged 15-49 years covered in the National family health survey-4 (2015-2016). Multivariate analyses, discontinuation rates using the multiple/single decrement life table and multi-level multinomial competing risk analyses were performed.Results: Discontinuation rate due to side effects within 12 months of use was highest for injectables (14.7%) and lowest for male condoms (3%) and due to method failure, it was highest for male condoms (3%) and lowest among IUD users (1.2%). Compared to women using IUD, those using pills had 2.3 times and 1.6 times the higher hazard of discontinuation due to method failure and side effects, respectively.Conclusions: The discontinuation rate of all selected methods was higher due to side effects than method failure. The high discontinuation rate of many contraceptive methods and the frequency of contraceptive failure suggest the need for strategies to promote improved contraceptive use following method selection. Improved quality of services through proper counselling of the potential contraceptive users would enhance informed choice, thus increasing modern contraception continuation among women in India

    Mechanism of action of hydrogen peroxide in wheat thermotolerance - interaction between antioxidant isoenzymes, proline and cell membrane

    Terminal heat stress causes an array of physiological, biochemical and morphological changes in plants, which affect plant growth and development. It has very severe effect on the pollen viability and seed setting in wheat. In the present investigation, an altered expression of H2O2 (0.9 μg/g in C-306 and 0.75 μg/g in HD2329) was observed with the highest accumulation at seed hardening stage and against heat shock (HS) of 42°C for 2 h. With the increase in H2O2 accumulation, an increase in the number of isoenzymes of superoxide dismutase and catalase were observed with high activities under differential heat shock. A decrease in the proline accumulation was observed under differential heat shock. Exogenous application of H2O2 (10 mmole/L) leads to increase in the accumulation of intracellular H2O2 and further an increase in the number of isoenzymes of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) was observed. The tolerant cultivar was more responsive to exogenous application of H2O2 compared to susceptible cultivar. The percentage decrease in cell membrane stability under differential heat shock was low in H2O2 treated plants compared to non-treated. The results from this study suggest a potential role for H2O2 in regulating the activity of antioxidant enzymes and accumulation of proline inside cells and in turn influence the cell membrane stability under heat stress. All the defense associated genes were observed to be very responsive to intracellular H2O2, which gives inference that H2O2 has regulatory role to play in controlling the expression and activities of these proteins under abiotic stresses.Key words: Antioxidant enzymes, wheat, heat stress, H2O2, proline, catalase, superoxide dismutase, cell membrane stability, reactive oxygen species

    Correlation of Clinical Examination, MRI and Arthroscopy Findings in Menisco-Cruciate Injuries of the Knee: A Prospective Diagnostic Study

    Background: The aim of this study was to examine the correlation of the clinical examination, MRI and arthroscopic findings in cruciate ligaments and meniscal injuries of knee and to evaluate the accuracy of clinical examination and MRI with the gold standard arthroscopy. Methods: A prospective diagnostic double-blind study was conducted on 104 consecutive patients admitted to the outdoor/casualty with trauma to the knee complaining of knee pain/locking/ instability, from August 2012 to June 2014. All the patients were subjected to clinical examination, MRI scanning and diagnostic arthroscopy. Variables like sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value and accuracy of clinical examination and MRI against arthroscopy were evaluated. Results: The sensitivity, specificity and accuracy of clinical examination for anterior cruciate ligament tears were 94.7%, 71.4% and 88.5% and for MRI were 94.7%, 78.6% and 90.4%, respectively; for posterior cruciate ligament tears 100%, 100% and 100% for clinical examination and for MRI 80%, 97.9% and 96.2%, respectively. These values for medial meniscus tears were 76.5%, 68.6% and 71.2% for clinical examination and 88.2%, 62.8% and 71.2% respectively for MRI. For lateral meniscus tears, 40%, 94.6% and 78.8% for clinical examination and 46.7%, 89.2% and 76.9% respectively for MRI. Conclusions: A skillfully performed clinical examination establishes a diagnosis on which an arthroscopic procedure can be planned, reserving MRI scans for patients where the clinical examination fails to establish a diagnosis or cannot be performed. Decision to use MRI should be based on the criteria that it would confirm, expand the diagnosis or change diagnosis in such a way that alters the proposed treatment

    Deltamethrin induced alterations of hematological and biochemical parameters in fingerlings of Catla catla (Ham.) and their amelioration by dietary supplement of vitamin C

    The present study was carried out to investigate the sub-lethal toxicity of technical grade deltamethrin (a synthetic pyrethroid) of concentration 1.61 μg/L (1/3rd of 96 h LC50) on hematological and biochemical parameters of catla (Catla catla) fingerlings and its amelioration through dietary vitamin C. The deltamethrin exposed fishes were fed with different levels of supplemented vitamin C such as 50, 250, 500 and 1000 mg/kg diet to see its ameliorating effect by assaying hematological parameters viz. total erythrocyte count (TEC), total leukocyte count (TLC), hemoglobin content (Hb), total serum protein, albumin, globulin, albumin–globulin ratio and biochemical parameters such as lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), acetylcholine esterase (AChE), alanine amino transferase (ALT), aspartate amino transferase (AST), total adenosine triphosphatase (ATPase), magnesium adenosine triphosphatase (Mg2+-ATPase) and sodium potassium adenosine triphosphatase (Na+, K+-ATPase) activities. The finding of this study showed that deltamethrin had negative effect on the hematological and biochemical parameters of Catla catla. The experimental group, which was exposed to deltamethrin and fed with normal diet showed significantly lower values (P ⩽ 0.05) of all parameters studied except ALT activity. This might be due to possible disruption of hematopoiesis and proteosynthesis. However, the fish fed with varied concentration of vitamin C in diets neutralized the toxic effect of deltamethrin, as evidenced by significantly lowered hematological and biochemical response. Vitamin C @ 1000 mg/kg diet was the most effective in amelioration of harmful effect of deltamethrin on hematological and biochemical parameters of catla fingerlings. The result suggests that vitamin C can be effectively used to neutralize the toxic effect of deltamethrin on catla
