Preliminary study on the feasibility of using a zeolite A membrane in a membrane reactor for methanol production
The permeation of a mixture containing H2, CO2 and water through a zeolite membrane was studied under several operating conditions. The aim was to obtain insight on the feasibility of using such membrane in a zeolite membrane reactor for CO2 hydrogenation to methanol. The effects of total pressure (100–270 kPa), water partial pressure (10–18 kPa) and temperature (160–260 °C) were studied. Promising water-permanent gas separation factors were obtained up to 240 °C. A surprisingly high water partial pressure was found in the permeate in some cases, which is explained by the radial temperature gradient in the experimental system. The good capability of this zeolite A membrane to selectively separate water vapor makes it a promising material for its use in a zeolite membrane reactor

Work-related allergy in medical doctors: atopy, exposure to domestic animals, eczema induced by common chemicals and membership of the surgical profession as potential risk factors
Purpose To investigate the risk factors associated with
work-related allergy-like symptoms in medical doctors.
Methods Self-administered questionnaire survey and CAP
test were conducted among medical school students in the
4th grade of their 6-year medical course in 1993–1996 and
1999–2001. Follow-up questionnaires were sent in 2004 to
the graduates. These questionnaires enquired into personal
and family history of allergic diseases, lifestyle, history of
allergy-like symptoms including work-relatedness and
occupational history as medical doctors. Relationships
between allergy-like symptoms and relevant factors were
evaluated by multivariate logistic regression analysis.
Results Of 261 respondents at the follow-up survey, 139
(53.3%) and 54 (20.7%) had a history of any allergy-like
symptoms and any work-related allergy-like symptoms,
respectively. Female gender and family history of allergic
diseases were signiWcantly associated with any allergy-like
symptoms. Personal history of allergic disease, exposure
to domestic animals, eczema caused by rubber gloves,
metallic accessories, or cosmetics during schooling days,
and membership of the surgical profession were signiW-
cant risk factors for work-related allergy-like symptoms.
On the contrary, to work-related allergy-like symptoms,
gender, age, and smoking status were not signiWcantly
related, and consumption of prepared foods was inversely
related.
Conclusions Personal history of atopy and eczema
induced by common goods and the history of keeping
domestic animals may be predictors of work-related
allergy-like symptoms in doctors. After graduation from
medical school, physicians start with exposure to various
allergens and irritants at work, which relate to work-related
allergy-like symptoms, especially for surgeons
The influence of psychiatric screening in healthy populations selection: a new study and meta-analysis of functional 5-HTTLPR and rs25531 polymorphisms and anxiety-related personality traits
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>A genetic liability for anxiety-related personality traits in healthy subjects has been associated with the functional serotonin transporter promoter polymorphism (5-HTTLPR), although the data are somewhat conflicting. Moreover, only one study has investigated the functional significance of the 5-HTTLPR/rs25531 haplotypes in relation to anxiety traits in healthy subjects. We tested whether the 5-HTTLPR polymorphism and the 5-HTTLPR/rs25531 haplotypes are linked to Harm Avoidance (HA) using an association study (STUDY I) and a meta-analytic approach (STUDY II).</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>STUDY I: A total of 287 unrelated Italian volunteers were screened for DSM-IV Axis I disorders and genotyped for the 5-HTTLPR and rs25531 (A/G) polymorphisms. Different functional haplotype combinations were also analyzed. STUDY II: A total of 44 studies were chosen for a meta-analysis of the putative association between 5-HTTLPR and anxiety-related personality traits.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>STUDY I: In the whole sample of 287 volunteers, we found that the SS genotype and S'S' haplotypes were associated with higher scores on HA. However, because the screening assessed by Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview (M.I.N.I.) showed the presence of 55 volunteers affected by depression or anxiety disorders, we analyzed the two groups ("disordered" and "healthy") separately. The data obtained did indeed confirm that in the "healthy" group, the significant effects of the SS genotype and S'S' haplotypes were lost, but they remained in the "disordered" group. STUDY II: The results of the 5-HTTLPR meta-analysis with anxiety-related traits in the whole sample confirmed the association of the SS genotype with higher anxiety-related traits scores in Caucasoids; however, when we analyzed only those studies that used structured psychiatric screening, no association was found.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>This study demonstrates the relevance to perform analyses on personality traits only in DSM-IV axis I disorder-free subjects. Furthermore, we did not find an association between functional serotonin transporter gene polymorphisms and anxiety traits in healthy subjects screened through a structured psychiatric interview.</p
CO2 removal at high temperature from multi-component gas stream using porous ceramic membranes infiltrated with molten carbonates
This work reports on the investigation of CO2 selective membranes for pre-combustion and post- combustion processes, in which CO2 is extracted from multi-component gas streams at intermediate temperature (400 – 600 °C). The dual-phase membranes developed in this work are designed as a porous oxide ion conducting ceramic matrix, which is infiltrated with a molten carbonate phase. Both ex-situ and in-situ characterization methods were used to study disk shaped and tubular membranes. The gas transport properties of disk-shaped membranes were further investigated under various operating conditions relevant for both post-combustion and pre-combustion applications
