Primary Factors Impacting Burnout in Special Education Teachers

    Get PDF
Many factors may lead to burnout of special education teachers. Teachers are faced with overwhelming caseloads, student behaviors, job duties, and a history that has been inconsistent with appropriate supports for students with special needs. The studies that were reviewed offered information that directly correlated with burnout. There was much focus on the three areas addressed by the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Educator Survey (MBI-ES). The three areas of burnout according to this survey were emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and personal accomplishments. Studies completed showed tendencies towards the emotional exhaustion being directly related to the highest rate of reasons for burnout among special education teachers. Some of the articles provided ideas for ways to combat the feelings and reality of burnout. Student needs continue to increase, even within the general education population. With the research from over 20 years all supporting the concerns regarding special education teacher burnout, school districts need to take a look at the support systems in place. There is a multitude of solutions districts can implement to alleviate the burdens special education teachers are facing

Educare alla pace attraverso l’approccio del Service-Learning

    Get PDF
During the course of Florence University, about Pedagogy of Peace and Management of Conflicts, started an experience about Service-Learning (SL) approach (Furco 2001, Fiorin 2016). After the proposal of topics concerning peace education, such as nonviolent education, fight against prejudice, discrimination and anti-Semitism, students became active heroes during the SL steps. During the motivation step, students choose, as main topic, Inclusion/Exclusion in the field of democracy education.

Insight Versus Rehearsal in Cognitive-Behavior Therapy: A Crossover Study with Sixteen Phobics

Although cognitive restructuring (CR) procedures have not proven very helpful for phobics in recent studies, insight and rehearsal components of CR have often been confounded. To seek possible differences in effectiveness between insight and rehearsal, we treated 16 phobics (eight agoraphobics and eight others) with four sessions of each method, using a counterbalanced crossover design with 1-month follow-ups after each treatment component. Significantly fewer sessions were attended by the clients in the rehearsal/insight sequence, and benefit ratings made by project completers significantly favoured insight/rehearsal. Few other treatment group differences were seen, but those that emerged gave the advantage to insight. Rehearsal seemed unhelpful, particularly to non-agoraphobics. Conclusions are (1) that CR methods show some promise in application to phobias, provided that self-exposure homework forms the core of the treatment plan, and (2) that insight followed by rehearsal is the preferred sequence

Bovine CD2(-)/NKp46(+ )cells are fully functional natural killer cells with a high activation status

BACKGROUND: Natural killer (NK) cells in the cow have been elusive due to the lack of specific NK cell markers, and various criteria including a CD3(-)/CD2(+ )phenotype have been used to identify such cells. The recent characterization of the NK-specific NKp46 receptor has allowed a more precise definition of bovine NK cells. NK cells are known as a heterogeneous cell group, and we here report the first functional study of bovine NK cell subsets, based on the expression of CD2. RESULTS: Bovine CD2(- )NK cells, a minor subset in blood, proliferated more rapidly in the presence of IL-2, dominating the cultures after a few days. Grown separately with IL-2, CD2(- )and CD2(+ )NK cell subsets did not change CD2 expression for at least two weeks. In blood, CD2(- )NK cells showed a higher expression of CD44 and CD25, consistent with a high activation status. A higher proportion of CD2(- )NK cells had intracellular interferon-gamma in the cytoplasm in response to IL-2 and IL-12 stimulation, and the CD2(- )subset secreted more interferon-gamma when cultured separately. Cytotoxic capacity was similar in both subsets, and both carried transcripts for the NK cell receptors KIR, CD16, CD94 and KLRJ. Ligation by one out of two tested anti-CD2 monoclonal antibodies could trigger interferon-gamma production from NK cells, but neither of them could alter cytotoxicity. CONCLUSION: These results provide evidence that bovine CD2(- )as well as CD2(+ )cells of the NKp46(+ )phenotype are fully functional NK cells, the CD2(- )subset showing signs of being more activated in the circulation
