    Periodicities in data observed during the minimum and the rising phase of solar cycle 23; years 1996 - 1999

    Three types of observations: the daily values of the solar radio flux at 7 frequencies, the daily international sunspot number and the daily Stanford mean solar magnetic field were processed in order to find all the periodicities hidden in the data. Using a new approach to the radio data, two time series were obtained for each frequency examined, one more sensitive to spot magnetic fields, the other to large magnetic structures not connected with sunspots. Power spectrum analysis of the data was carried out separately for the minimum (540 days from 1 March 1996 to 22 August 1997) and for the rising phase (708 days from 23 August 1997 to 31 July 1999) of the solar cycle 23. The Scargle periodograms obtained, normalized for the effect of autocorrelation, show the majority of known periods and reveal a clear difference between the periodicities found in the minimum and the rising phase. We determined the rotation rate of the `active longitudes' in the rising phase as equal to 444.4 ±\pm 4 nHz (26\fd0 \pm 0\fd3). The results indicate that appropriate and careful analysis of daily radio data at several frequencies allows the investigation of solar periodicities generated in different layers of the solar atmosphere by various phenomena related to the periodic emergence of diverse magnetic structures.Comment: 15 pages, 8 figure

    Assessment of competitive investment attractiveness of enterprises of hotel and restaurant business

    Hotel and restaurant business in Ukraine is able to provide gradual dynamic development of the tourism industry and make it competitive on the world market. Improving the competitiveness of the hotel involves the introduction of new elements, closing old ones, upgrading existing ones. In other words, the update that requires a qualitative analysis. Scientific solving of problems of creating a system of indicators for assessing the investment attractiveness of hotel and restaurant enterprises will further provide effective development of the tourism industry. It is assumed that creating a system of evaluation of investment attractiveness of hotel and restaurant business will form for business hotel – restaurant industry trends of effective coordination of investment processes and activities that provide investment management processes for criterion of maximum efficiency. Theoretical foundations and development of scientific and methodological tools of formation and evaluation of investment policy of hotel industry enterprises in modern conditions. The study uses general scientific methods of system analysis – to systematize the types of investment types and investment policy of enterprises; methods of economic and statistical analysis for determining factors in the formation of investment environment; method of technical and economic calculations – for justification of the investment policy and the definition of investment attractiveness of enterprises. Proposed criteria for evaluating the effectiveness of the investment policy of the company, which includes: the profitability of the object, the ratio of profit and risk, improve the quality and competitiveness of enterprises, social and environmental performance. In accordance with the established criteria, systematized indicators that are combined into several groups: the performance of investment activities involved in the company; indicators characterizing the financial and economic performance; indicators that define the technical level of service, intensity of play of assets; quality of investment activity. The proposed criteria for evaluating the effectiveness of the investment policy of the company as a tool of evaluation will determine the classes of investment attractiveness of hotel facilities of different ownership from different regions of Ukraine

    Glutamate Cysteine Ligase-Modulatory Subunit Knockout Mouse Shows Normal Insulin Sensitivity but Reduced Liver Glycogen Storage.

    Glutathione (GSH) deficits have been observed in several mental or degenerative illness, and so has the metabolic syndrome. The impact of a decreased glucose metabolism on the GSH system is well-known, but the effect of decreased GSH levels on the energy metabolism is unclear. The aim of the present study was to investigate the sensitivity to insulin in the mouse knockout (KO) for the modulatory subunit of the glutamate cysteine ligase (GCLM), the rate-limiting enzyme of GSH synthesis. Compared to wildtype (WT) mice, GCLM-KO mice presented with reduced basal plasma glucose and insulin levels. During an insulin tolerance test, GCLM-KO mice showed a normal fall in glycemia, indicating normal insulin secretion. However, during the recovery phase, plasma glucose levels remained lower for longer in KO mice despite normal plasma glucagon levels. This is consistent with a normal counterregulatory hormonal response but impaired mobilization of glucose from endogenous stores. Following a resident-intruder stress, during which stress hormones mobilize glucose from hepatic glycogen stores, KO mice showed a lower hyperglycemic level despite higher plasma cortisol levels when compared to WT mice. The lower hepatic glycogen levels observed in GCLM-KO mice could explain the impaired glycogen mobilization following induced hypoglycemia. Altogether, our results indicate that reduced liver glycogen availability, as observed in GCLM-KO mice, could be at the origin of their lower basal and challenged glycemia. Further studies will be necessary to understand how a GSH deficit, typically observed in GCLM-KO mice, leads to a deficit in liver glycogen storage

    Thermal–electrical transport of high purity, melt impregnated, polycrystalline MgB2

    In the polycrystalline superconductor MgB2 the fraction of cross section that carries electrical current was previously shown to be obtained from the normal state electrical resistivity. The latest single crystal measurements show the thermal transport properties of MgB2 to be dominated by electrical transport. For the first time we apply the electrical cross section to the thermal conductivity of three polycrystalline samples with different grain size and porosity. It is found that the results can be readily discussed in the context of granular thermal–electrical properties consisting of common temperature dependent transport properties independent of grain size and porosity. The result gives an alternative interpretation to the temperature dependent thermal transport than given in previous publications

    The historical review of the Institute of General and Inorganic Chemistry of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus considers all periods of the Institute’s evolution, starting with its organization in 1959, forming the main structural divisions and areas of research and development (1959–1968), structuring these areas and accelerating their development (1969–1990), optimization and headway with a primary focus on the scientific support of important tasks of industry and the agricultural complex of the Republic of Belarus (1991–2019). The information on the formation and development of scientific schools at the Institute, their outstanding achievements and examples of successful implementation of developments in enterprises and organizations of the national economic complex is presented. In chronological order, the results of the activities of the Institute scientists structured by the main scientific areas are reviewed, and references to their published books and monographs are given.В историческом обзоре деятельности Института общей и неорганической химии НАН Беларуси рассматриваются все этапы развития Института, начиная с его организации в 1959 году, формирования основных структурных подразделений и направлений научных исследований и разработок (1959–1968 гг.), структурирования этих направлений и их ускоренного развития (1969–1990 гг.), оптимизации и поступательного движения с преимущественной ориентацией на научное обеспечение важных задач отраслей промышленности и сельскохозяйственного комплекса Республики Беларусь (1991–2019 гг.).     Response of beam-to-column web cleated joints for FRP pultruded members

    Physical testing is used to characterize the structural properties of beam-to-column joints, comprising pultruded fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) H-shapes of depth 203 mm, connected by 128 mm-long web cleats and two M16 bolts per leg. Testing is performed on two batches of nominally identical specimens. One batch had web cleats of pultruded FRP and the other had structural steel. The structural behavior of the joints is based on their moment-rotation responses, failure modes, and serviceability vertical deflection limits. Joints with FRP cleats failed by delamination cracking at the top of the cleats, and when the cleats were of steel, the FRP failure occurred inside the column members. Neither failure mode is reported in the design manuals from pultruders. At the onset of the FRP damage, it was found that the steel joints were twice as stiff as the FRP joints. On the basis of a characteristic (damage) rotation, calculated in accordance with Eurocode 0, the serviceability deflection limits are established to be span/300 and span/650 for the joints with FRP and steel cleats, respectively. This finding suggests that appropriate deflection limits, in relation to cleated connections, should be proposed in manufactures’ design manuals and relative design standards and design codes. Failure to address the serviceability, by the engineer of record, could lead to unreliable designs
