Pathway MCQs as an Active Learning Strategy for Students in Microbiology: A Preliminary study
Medical curriculum involves many pathways. Understanding and remembering pathways in Microbiology (esp. pathogenesis) is a challenging task for the students. Pathway MCQ (Dugdale AE, 1998) helps in eliminating this confusion. An effort was made to introduce these Pathway MCQs as a teaching, revising and as an evaluation strategy to enable them to remember the pathways more effectively thereby enhancing understanding of concepts. A total of 106 second year medical students of Melaka Manipal Medical College (Manipal Campus) were included in this study. Pathway MCQs (PMCQs) on specific topics were prepared by the faculty members. Initially, the students were asked to answer the questions in the form of short answer on few topics prior to administration of PMCQs. These short essay answers were evaluated. Later, each student was given a set of Pathway MCQs on the topic administered earlier. Students had to solve the PMCQs and write a short answer thereafter. The PMCQs and the short answers were evaluated by faculty members who were not involved in the study. A class test was conducted after 4 weeks on topics assigned in the semester including the topics that were administered as PMCQs. After evaluation, the marks scored by the students were tabulated and analyzed. A feedback in the form of a questionnaire was collected from students. PMCQs were found to be simple and interesting, helped to remember and understand pathways, enhanced active learning, employed as a revising strategy and as a formative evaluation strategy. Statistical analysis suggested that students’ overall performance in examinations had been enhanced after administration of PMCQs
Role of General Dental Practitioners in Smoking Cessation Programme
Tobacco use is a dental as well as a medical problem. Its use is the root cause of many oral health problems including periodontal disease and tooth loss. In the past few years, there has been an increasing awareness of the role of tobacco use in the prevalence and severity of periodontal disease. Like other health professions, dentistry has taken a stand against cigarette smoking. Dentists can use a variety of smoking cessation techniques to prevent the oral health problems associated with tobacco use. To carry out a minimal programme of antismoking measures, dentists in general practice can serve as a non-smoking role model for their patients, provide information about the health hazards of smoking, give advice and guidance, refer patients to cessation programmes, recommend cessation measures and monitor patients’ effort to quit smoking. Dental practice in 21st century has to increasingly move from a restorative orientation to one of a broader promotion of health and wellbeing
Capability framework implementing pay-per-outcome business model in equipment manufacturing companies
The primary objective of this paper is to enhance our understanding of the capabilities necessary for implementing a pay-per-outcome business model and how equipment manufacturing companies can successfully implement such a business model. Based on systematic literature research, we analysed 12 research publications that discussed pay-per-outcome capabilities in the equipment manufacturing industry. We identified 36 capabilities and formulated a capability framework for pay-per-outcome business models in the equipment manufacturing industry. We also identified that pay-per-outcome business models require specific capabilities related to customer relationship and contracting, compared with other service-based business models (such as pay-per-use business models). Since earlier studies have failed to distinguish the capabilities necessary for pay-per-outcome business models from those for other types of product–service system business models or focused on some specific required capabilities for the former business models, we contribute to current business model literature by uncovering the unique characteristics of pay-per-outcome business models in the equipment manufacturing industry.publishedVersionPeer reviewe
Data Analytics Capability Roadmap for PPO Business Models in Equipment Manufacturing Companies
The objective of this paper is to extend the knowledge of data analytics capabilities and the development process required to implement pay-per-output/-outcome (PPO) business models. To achieve this objective, we conducted qualitative research to study two equipment manufacturing companies in their business model transformation, with a special interest in their data analytics capability development path. The findings were threefold; first we validated the data analytics capabilities necessary for PPO business models synthesised from literature with the selected case companies. Second, two additional data analytics capabilities, namely capability to influence how performance is measured and analysed, and capability to simulate the solution’s financial performance) were identified. Finally, this study presents two different roadmaps on how data analytics capabilities have been developed. The study findings suggest that remote monitoring capability is among the most critical data analytics capability to initiate a PPO business model in the equipment manufacturing industry. This study contributes to business model literature, and information systems literature.Peer reviewe
Review of PPX Business Models : Adaptability and Feasibility of PPX Models in the Equipment Manufacturing Industry
The overall purpose of this study is to understand how manufacturing companies have so far made use of and can make use of pay-per-x (PPX) business models (BMs) largely in capital product markets, and which mechanisms have helped them in the implementation. Through systematic literature approach this study analysed 14 research publications which exclusively focused on PPX business models. The differences between PPX business model patterns were studied from three perspective, namely criticality of product, need of process knowledge and complexity of the process and its output. We find out that the pay-per-outcome business model, is more prevalent for products which are critical, needs extensive process knowledge and are rather complex. In contrarily, pay-per-output business model is more prevalent when these conditions are not met. However, none of these three factors prevents implementing other type of PPX business model but rather specific business model is more feasible when specific conditions are met. This paper contributes a much more in-depth qualitative view on the patterns and related qualitative arguments for the useful application of PPX models in equipment manufacturing industries and helps to understand the differences between PPX business model types.acceptedVersionPeer reviewe
Orchestrating organisational transformation for business model innovation towards servitization in the automotive industry
The objective of this dissertation is to present a firm’s business model innovation (BMI) and organisational change during the servitization process. It mainly aims to produce new knowledge on BMI and the factors that influence the transformation process and organisational change during servitization in the automotive firm. A qualitative, multi- case research design was employed in this research. The data were obtained through secondary sources, including annual reports, press notes, media releases, websites, and auto magazines. A total of 103 public documents were obtained from various sources during the period 2016-2019. The thematic analysis technique was used to analyse the dataL’objectiu de la present tesi doctoral és presentar la innovació en model de negoci d’una empresa i el canvi organitzatiu que l’acompanya en el procés de servitització. FEEDBACK REVIEW SYSTEM USING SENTIMENT ANALYSIS
Sentiment analysis is done to perform text classification on the data given by the students. The proposed system collects the feedback from the students after completion of their respective courses and then determines the nature of the feedback which will help the faculty to get review of the courses and analyze the thoughts of students to improve the course. Before using the proposed system, we validate the application by testing a classified dataset and get the accuracy. We use Naive Bayes classifier to classify the data. The classified dataset is divided into training dataset and testing dataset. These datasets must be processed with set of operations such as tokenization, removing characters, lemmatization and vectorization of the data to make it easier for algorithm to test the dataset. A sentiment analysis model based on the Naive Bayes classifier is trained with training dataset and then we test the testing dataset with the proposed model. The score we got from testing classified dataset determines the validity of our system. Once the proposed system is validated, it will use sentiment analysis to calculate the probability determined by the proposed model and classify the data as either positive review or negative review. This will be useful for professors and faculty to get the review of feedbacks given by students without reading all of them
