    Hermitian boson mapping and finite truncation

    Starting from a general, microscopic fermion-to-boson mapping that preserves Hermitian conjugation, we discuss truncations of the boson Fock space basis. We give conditions under which the exact boson images of finite fermion operators are also finite (e.g., a 1+2-body fermion Hamiltonian is mapped to a 1+2-body boson Hamiltonian) in the truncated basis.     Elizabeth Cary and Intersections of Catholicism and Gender in Early Modern England

    Historians have analyzed the life of Elizabeth Cary, Lady Falkland, primarily in the context of her highly publicized conversion to Catholicism and her equally public separation from her Protestant husband, Henry Cary. Through this scrutiny, she has become one among many English Catholic recusant heroines. Literary critics, in contrast, have celebrated Cary\u27s literary corpus both for its challenge to traditional ideals of early modern women as chaste, silent, and obedient and for its reevaluation of women\u27s roles within marriage.1 To circumscribe our understandings of Cary in such ways obscures one of her greatest contributions. Elizabeth Cary, albeit unintentionally, provided an alternative model of Catholic woman hood that sought to negotiate a new balance between religion and gender, thus challenging assumptions about women\u27s roles in English Catholic communities and about the rigid character of Catholicism in the Reformation era

The article does not propose any new definition of chaos but, starting from several topological properties that can be reasonably called chaotic, tries to sketch a theoretical view of chaos. Among the main ideas in this article are the distinction between overall chaos and partial chaos, and the fact that some dynamical properties may be considered more chaotic than others

    The reductive activation of CO2 across a Ti═Ti double bond: synthetic, structural, and mechanistic studies

    [Image: see text] The reactivity of the bis(pentalene)dititanium double-sandwich compound Ti(2)Pn(†)(2) (1) (Pn(†) = 1,4-{Si(i)Pr(3)}(2)C(8)H(4)) with CO(2) is investigated in detail using spectroscopic, X-ray crystallographic, and computational studies. When the CO(2) reaction is performed at −78 °C, the 1:1 adduct 4 is formed, and low-temperature spectroscopic measurements are consistent with a CO(2) molecule bound symmetrically to the two Ti centers in a μ:η(2),η(2) binding mode, a structure also indicated by theory. Upon warming to room temperature the coordinated CO(2) is quantitatively reduced over a period of minutes to give the bis(oxo)-bridged dimer 2 and the dicarbonyl complex 3. In situ NMR studies indicated that this decomposition proceeds in a stepwise process via monooxo (5) and monocarbonyl (7) double-sandwich complexes, which have been independently synthesized and structurally characterized. 5 is thermally unstable with respect to a μ-O dimer in which the Ti–Ti bond has been cleaved and one pentalene ligand binds in an η(8) fashion to each of the formally Ti(III) centers. The molecular structure of 7 shows a “side-on” bound carbonyl ligand. Bonding of the double-sandwich species Ti(2)Pn(2) (Pn = C(8)H(6)) to other fragments has been investigated by density functional theory calculations and fragment analysis, providing insight into the CO(2) reaction pathway consistent with the experimentally observed intermediates. A key step in the proposed mechanism is disproportionation of a mono(oxo) di-Ti(III) species to yield di-Ti(II) and di-Ti(IV) products. 1 forms a structurally characterized, thermally stable CS(2) adduct 8 that shows symmetrical binding to the Ti(2) unit and supports the formulation of 4. The reaction of 1 with COS forms a thermally unstable complex 9 that undergoes scission to give mono(μ-S) mono(CO) species 10. Ph(3)PS is an effective sulfur transfer agent for 1, enabling the synthesis of mono(μ-S) complex 11 with a double-sandwich structure and bis(μ-S) dimer 12 in which the Ti–Ti bond has been cleaved

    Standardized Hepatitis B Virus RNA Quantification in Untreated and Treated Chronic Patients: a Promising Marker of Infection Follow-Up.

    The measurement and interpretation of HBV DNA and RNA levels in HBV infected patients treated with antiviral therapy supports the objective of HBV disease management. Here, we quantified circulating HBV RNA through a standardized and sensitive assay in follow-up samples from both naive and treated patients as a marker of infection evolution. HBV DNA (HBV DNA for use in Cobas 6800/8800 Automated Roche Molecular Systems), RNA (Roche HBV RNA Investigational Assay for use in the Cobas 6800/8800; Roche), HBeAg and HBsAg (Elycsys HBsAg chemiluminescence immunoassay by Cobas 8000; Roche), and core-related antigen (Lumipulse G chemiluminescence assay; Fujirebio) levels were measured in cohorts of untreated or nucleos(t)ide treated, HBV-infected subjects in an outpatient hospital setting. HBV DNA levels in untreated people were 3.6 log10 higher than corresponding RNA levels and were stable over 5 years of observation. While only five of 52 treated patients had DNA levels below the lower limit of quantification (10 IU/mL) at the end of follow-up, 13 had HBV RNA levels persistently above this limit, including eight with undetectable DNA. In samples with undetectable core-related antigen we observed a median HBsAg titer 2.7-fold higher than in samples with undetectable RNA (adjusted P = 0.012). Detectable HBV RNA with undetectable HBV DNA was a negative predictor of HBsAg decrease to a level ≤100 IU/mL (P = 0.03). In naive patients the difference between HBV DNA and RNA was higher than previously reported. HBV RNA rapidly decreased during treatment. However, in some cases, it was detectable even after years of effective therapy, being a negative predictor of HBsAg decrease. The investigational RNA assay for use on the Cobas 6800/8800 instruments is a sensitive and standardized method that could be applied in general management of HBV infection. IMPORTANCE This study focused on the quantification of circulating HBV RNA by using a standardized and sensitive assay. Thanks to this system we observed a higher difference between circulating HBV DNA and RNA than previously reported. In treated patients, HBV RNA decreased together with DNA, although some patients presented detectable levels even after years of successful antiviral treatment, suggesting a persistent viral transcription. Of note, the detection of viral RNA when HBV DNA is undetectable was a negative predictor of HBsAg decrease to a level ≤100 IU/mL. This assay could be extremely helpful in HBV patients management to study viral transcription and to identify those treated patients that may achieve sustained viral suppression

    This report summarizes results of the Hybrid Wing Body (HWB) N2A-EXTE model aeroacoustic test. The N2A-EXTE model was tested in the NASA Langley 14- by 22-Foot Subsonic Tunnel (14x22 Tunnel) from September 12, 2012 until January 28, 2013 and was designated as test T598. This document contains the following main sections: Section 1 - Introduction, Section 2 - Main Personnel, Section 3 - Test Equipment, Section 4 - Data Acquisition Systems, Section 5 - Instrumentation and Calibration, Section 6 - Test Matrix, Section 7 - Data Processing, and Section 8 - Summary. Due to the amount of material to be documented, this HWB test documentation report does not cover analysis of acquired data, which is to be presented separately by the principal investigators. Also, no attempt was made to include preliminary risk reduction tests (such as Broadband Engine Noise Simulator and Compact Jet Engine Simulator characterization tests, shielding measurement technique studies, and speaker calibration method studies), which were performed in support of this HWB test. Separate reports containing these preliminary tests are referenced where applicable

    Bonding in complexes of bis(pentalene)di-titanium, Ti2(C8H6)2

    Bonding in the bis(pentalene)di-titanium ‘double-sandwich’ species Ti2Pn2 (Pn = C8H6) and its interaction with other fragments have been investigated by xdensity functional calculations and fragment analysis. Ti2Pn2 with C2v symmetry has two metal-metal bonds and a low-lying metal based empty orbital, all three frontier orbitals having a1 symmetry. The latter may be regarded as being derived by symmetric combinations of the classic three frontier orbitals of two bent bis(cyclopentadienyl) metal fragments. Electrochemical studies on Ti2Pn†2 (Pn† = C8H4{SiiPr3-1,4}2) reveal a one-electron oxidation, and the formally mixed-valence Ti(II)-Ti(III) cationic complex [Ti2Pn†2][B(C6F5)4] has been structurally characterised. Theory indicates an S = ½ ground state electronic configuration for the latter, confirmed by EPR spectroscopy and SQUID magnetometry. Carbon dioxide binds symmetrically to Ti2Pn2 preserving C2v symmetry, as does carbon disulfide. The dominant interaction in Ti2Pn2CO2 is σ donation into the LUMO of bent CO2 and donation from the O atoms to Ti2Pn2 is minimal, whereas in Ti2Pn2CS2 there is significant interaction with the S atoms. The bridging O atom in the mono(oxo) species Ti2Pn2O, however, employs all three O 2p orbitals in binding and competes strongly with Pn, leading to weaker binding of the carbocyclic ligand, and the sulfur analog Ti2Pn2S behaves similarly. Ti2Pn2 is also capable of binding one, two and three molecules of carbon monoxide. The bonding demands of a single CO molecule are incompatible with symmetric binding and an asymmetric structure is found. The dicarbonyl adduct Ti2Pn2(CO)2 has Cs symmetry with the Ti2Pn2 unit acting as two MCp2 fragments. Synthetic studies show, that in the presence of excess CO a tricarbonyl complex Ti2Pn†2(CO)3 is formed, which optimises to an asymmetric structure with two terminal CO ligands and one semi-bridging.     Hybrid Wing Body Aircraft Acoustic Test Preparations and Facility Upgrades

    NASA is investigating the potential of acoustic shielding as a means to reduce the noise footprint at airport communities. A subsonic transport aircraft and Langley's 14- by 22-foot Subsonic Wind Tunnel were chosen to test the proposed "low noise" technology. The present experiment studies the basic components of propulsion-airframe shielding in a representative flow regime. To this end, a 5.8-percent scale hybrid wing body model was built with dual state-of-the-art engine noise simulators. The results will provide benchmark shielding data and key hybrid wing body aircraft noise data. The test matrix for the experiment contains both aerodynamic and acoustic test configurations, broadband turbomachinery and hot jet engine noise simulators, and various airframe configurations which include landing gear, cruise and drooped wing leading edges, trailing edge elevons and vertical tail options. To aid in this study, two major facility upgrades have occurred. First, a propane delivery system has been installed to provide the acoustic characteristics with realistic temperature conditions for a hot gas engine; and second, a traversing microphone array and side towers have been added to gain full spectral and directivity noise characteristics

    Perioperative and long-term operative outcomes after surgery for trigeminal neuralgia: microvascular decompression vs percutaneous balloon ablation

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Objectives</p> <p>Numerous medical and surgical therapies have been utilized to treat the symptoms of trigeminal neuralgia (TN). This retrospective study compares patients undergoing either microvascular decompression or balloon ablation of the trigeminal ganglion and determines which produces the best long-term outcomes.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A 10-year retrospective chart review was performed on patients who underwent microvascular decompression (MVD) or percutaneous balloon ablation (BA) surgery for TN. Demographic data, intraoperative variables, length of hospitalization and symptom improvement were assessed along with complications and recurrences of symptoms after surgery. Appropriate statistical comparisons were utilized to assess differences between the two surgical techniques.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>MVD patients were younger but were otherwise similar to BA patients. Intraoperatively, twice as many BA patients developed bradycardia compared to MVD patients. 75% of BA patients with bradycardia had an improvement of symptoms. Hospital stay was shorter in BA patients but overall improvement of symptoms was better with MVD. Postoperative complication rates were similar (21% vs 26%) between the BA and MVD groups.</p> <p>Discussion</p> <p>MVD produced better overall outcomes compared to BA and may be the procedure of choice for surgery to treat TN.</p
