    The diet of Common Gulls (Larus canus) breeding on the German North Sea coast

    The diet of Common Gulls Larus canus was analysed from pellets and faeces during the breeding period in 1995. Three geographically well-separated colonies were selected: one located close to the open North Sea (Amrum Island), one at the inner edge of the Wadden Sea (Nordstrandischmoor Island}, and one in the tidal river Elbe (Liihesand Island). The birds fed upon a large variety of food types. 1n the two colonies adjacent to the sea, prey types from the tidal flats were most numerous (mainly crustaceans, polychaetes, bivalves). Gadids and Smelt Osmerus eperlanus were the fish identified most often, whereas discards from fisheries were relatively important during the early incubation period on Amrum and Nordstrandischmoor. Terrestrial food was also taken (earthworms, insects) but was less important. On Liihesand, in contrast, Common Gulls fed predominantly on terrestrial food (earthworms, insects, mammals and fruits). These birds hardly utilised the river Elbe and associated freshwater tidal flats. The diet changed in all three colonies over the breeding period. The proportion of mammals increased while that of fish and bivalves (only the two colonies close to the coast) decreased. On Liihesand, a considerable proportion of the pellets consisted of cherry stones during the chickrearing period. Common Gulls were relatively widely distributed in the inner German Bight but all major concentrations were located close to land, chiefly in front of the mouths of the rivers Elbe and Weser.     Plasticity versus repeatability in seabird migratory behaviour

    Pelagic seabird populations can use several discrete wintering areas, but it is unknown if individuals use the same wintering area year after year. This would have consequences for their population genetic structure and conservation. We here study the faithfulness of individuals to a moulting area within and among years in a small pelagic seabird, the Thin-billed prion, which moult their primary feathers during the early part of the non-breeding period. According to stable carbon isotope ratios (δ13C) of these feathers, 90% of Thin-billed prions moult in Antarctic and 10% in South American waters. Repeated samples from individuals in 2 or 3 years indicated that several birds changed between Antarctic and South American moulting areas or vice versa. However, individuals moulting in an area in one year were more likely to do so again. Four out of five adults maintained highly conserved δ13C over the extended moulting period. One bird, however, had systematic changes in δ13C indicating latitudinal movements between the two areas during moult. Thus, the present data show that this seabird species has a highly flexible migratory strategy, not only at the population level, but also at the individual level, enabling these seabirds to exploit a highly unpredictable environment

    Understanding distribution patterns, activities, and foraging behaviours of seabirds requires interdisciplinary approaches. In this paper, we provide examples of the data and analytical procedures from a new study in the German Bight (North Sea) tracking northern gannets (Morus bassanus) at their breeding colony on the island of Heligoland. Individual adult northern gannets were equipped with different types of data loggers for several weeks, measuring geographic positions and other parameters mostly at 3–5 min intervals. Birds flew in all directions from the island to search for food, but most flights targeted areas to the (N)NW (north–northwest) of Heligoland. Foraging trips were remarkably variable in duration and distance; most trips lasted 1–15 h and extended from 3 to 80 km from the breeding colony on Heligoland. Dives of gannets were generally shallow, with more than half of the dives only reaching depths of 1–3 m. The maximum dive depth was 11.4 m. Gannets showed a clear diurnal rhythm in their diving activity, with dives being almost completely restricted to the daylight period. Most flight activity at sea occurred at an altitude between the sea surface and 40 m. Gannets mostly stayed away from the wind farms and passed around them much more frequently than flying through them. Detailed information on individual animals may provide important insights into processes that are not detectable at a community level

    Relationships between seabird breeding and food supply have been subject to much study, but we know little about the influence of food suply in winter on survival and subsequent breeding performance of seabirds, or about the extent to which migrations and winter home ranges of seabirds are influenced by food abundance. The Great Skua Stercorarius skua is a colonially breeding seabird that displays a wide range of feeding techniques during and outside the breeding season. We deployed satellite PTTs and data loggers to determine migration routes and winter quarters of breeding adult Great Skuas. We also studied dietary preferences by direct observations and by use of fatty acid and stable isotope signatures, and measured body condition and breeding performance of individually colour marked birds. Our objective was to develop methods to investigate whether winter foraging conditions may influence subsequent breeding performance, and to collect data to assess whether migrations and winter ranges differed between individuals in ways that may relate to fitness. We found large differences in the winter home ranges of individual Great Skuas, with some wintering off Iberia and others off west Africa. The latter behaviour was unexpected and may represent a new habit to exploit waste from fisheries that have recently developed on the west African continental shelf. Fatty acid signatures provide a clear signal of the presence of demersal fish from fishcry discards in skua diet and can be used to assess the feeding preference of individuals. Stable isotopes of C and N in primary feathers show changes in diet of individuals through the period of moult, which is thought to be from September to December. These approaches show that combining the use of data loggers and sampling of forensic markers of colour ringed adults permits the winter diet of individuals to be related to their geographic location in winter and to their subsequent breeding performanc

    Land or sea? Foraging area choice during breeding by an omnivorous gull

    Background:Generalist predators may vary their diet and use of habitat according to both internal state (e.g. breeding stage) and external (e.g. weather) factors. Lesser black-backed gulls Larus fuscus (Linnaeus 1758) are dietary generalists, foraging in both terrestrial and marine habitats during breeding. We investigate what affects the gulls’ propensity to forage at sea or on land. We assess the importance of terrestrial foraging to gulls in the Baltic Sea (sub. sp. L. f. fuscus), looking especially at their use of agricultural fields.Results:Through the GPS tracking of 19 individuals across 3 years we tracked 1038 foraging trips and found that 21.2 % of foraging trips were predominantly terrestrial, 9.0 % were a mix of terrestrial and marine, and 68.5 % were exclusively marine. Terrestrial trips were (1) more frequent when departing around sunrise, whereas marine trips occurred throughout the day. Additionally, trips with mostly land-based foraging decreased as the breeding season progressed, suggesting dietary switching coincident with the onset of chick provisioning. (2) During cloudy and cold conditions terrestrial foraging trips were more likely. (3) We found no differences between sexes in their land-based foraging strategy. (4) Gull individuals showed great variation in foraging strategy. Using observations of agricultural fields, carried out for one year, we found that (5) gulls preferentially foraged on fields with short vegetation, and there was a positive association with occurrence of waders and other species of gulls. (6) The availability and use of these preferred fields decreased through the breeding period.Conclusions:This study found high prevalence of terrestrial foraging during early breeding as well as support for dietary switching early in the breeding season. The overall tendency for marine or terrestrial foraging was consistent within individuals, with gull identity accounting for much of the variation observed in foraging trips. Our results suggest that anthropogenic terrestrial food sources may play a role in the low breeding success of these gulls through either variation in quantity and/or quality. Finally, our study demonstrates the potential of combining data from GPS-tracking of individual animals with the ‘ground-truthing’ of habitat visited to elucidate the otherwise nebulous behavior of a generalist predator
