Quantum communication cost of preparing multipartite entanglement
We study the preparation and distribution of high-fidelity multi-party
entangled states via noisy channels and operations. In the particular case of
GHZ and cluster states, we study different strategies using bipartite or
multipartite purification protocols. The most efficient strategy depends on the
target fidelity one wishes to achieve and on the quality of transmission
channel and local operations. We show the existence of a crossing point beyond
which the strategy making use of the purification of the state as a whole is
more efficient than a strategy in which pairs are purified before they are
connected to the final state. We also study the efficiency of intermediate
strategies, including sequences of purification and connection. We show that a
multipartite strategy is to be used if one wishes to achieve high fidelity,
whereas a bipartite strategy gives a better yield for low target fidelity.Comment: 21 pages, 17 figures; accepted for publication in Phys. Rev. A; v2:

Optimal purification of thermal graph states
In this paper, a purification protocol is presented and its performance is
proven to be optimal when applied to a particular subset of graph states that
are subject to local Z-noise. Such mixed states can be produced by bringing a
system into thermal equilibrium, when it is described by a Hamiltonian which
has a particular graph state as its unique ground state. From this protocol, we
derive the exact value of the critical temperature above which purification is
impossible, as well as the related optimal purification rates. A possible
simulation of graph Hamiltonians is proposed, which requires only bipartite
interactions and local magnetic fields, enabling the tuning of the system
temperature.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures v2: published versio

Prospective association of occupational and leisure-time physical activity with orthostatic blood pressure changes in older adults
\ua9 2023, The Author(s).Orthostatic hypotension (OH) is common in older people. We examined the influence of self-reported occupational-related physical activity (PA) and leisure-time physical exercise (PE) on orthostatic response in a sample of older people over a 2 year period. Supine and orthostatic systolic blood pressure (sBP), diastolic blood pressure (dBP), and mean blood pressure (mBP) were assessed in response to Active Stand (AS) test in 205 older subjects (> 60 years old) at baseline and 2-year follow-up. OH was found in 24 subjects (11.71%) at baseline and 20 subjects (9.76%) after 2 years, with a significant degree of variability in the occurrence of OH after 2 years. Twenty-two subjects who had OH at baseline were free of it after 2 years, two subjects had persistent OH at baseline and after 2 years. After 2 years, adults with occupational PA showed no significant decrease of blood pressure in response to AS test, while lack of undertaking an occupation-related PA was significantly related with a greater decrease in sBP and mBP in response to AS testing in the 1st min. Occupation-related PA and leisure-time-related PE were related to an increase in the response of BP on AS in change between baseline and after 2 years. High between-subjects variance in OH over 2 years was noted. Occupations that involved continuous physical activity and leisure-time physical exercise in middle age were both protective for BP decline on orthostatic stress test within 2 years

Entanglement entropy of two disjoint intervals in c=1 theories
We study the scaling of the Renyi entanglement entropy of two disjoint blocks
of critical lattice models described by conformal field theories with central
charge c=1. We provide the analytic conformal field theory result for the
second order Renyi entropy for a free boson compactified on an orbifold
describing the scaling limit of the Ashkin-Teller (AT) model on the self-dual
line. We have checked this prediction in cluster Monte Carlo simulations of the
classical two dimensional AT model. We have also performed extensive numerical
simulations of the anisotropic Heisenberg quantum spin-chain with tree-tensor
network techniques that allowed to obtain the reduced density matrices of
disjoint blocks of the spin-chain and to check the correctness of the
predictions for Renyi and entanglement entropies from conformal field theory.
In order to match these predictions, we have extrapolated the numerical results
by properly taking into account the corrections induced by the finite length of
the blocks to the leading scaling behavior.Comment: 37 pages, 23 figure

Aerobic Training in Rats Increases Skeletal Muscle Sphingomyelinase and Serine Palmitoyltransferase Activity, While Decreasing Ceramidase Activity
Sphingolipids are important components of cell membranes that may also serve as cell signaling molecules; ceramide plays a central role in sphingolipid metabolism. The aim of this study was to examine the effect of 5 weeks of aerobic training on key enzymes and intermediates of ceramide metabolism in skeletal muscles. The experiments were carried out on rats divided into two groups: (1) sedentary and (2) trained for 5 weeks (on a treadmill). The activity of serine palmitoyltransferase (SPT), neutral and acid sphingomyelinase (nSMase and aSMase), neutral and alkaline ceramidases (nCDase and alCDase) and the content of sphingolipids was determined in three types of skeletal muscle. We also measured the fasting plasma insulin and glucose concentration for calculating HOMA-IR (homeostasis model assessment) for estimating insulin resistance. We found that the activities of aSMase and SPT increase in muscle in the trained group. These changes were followed by elevation in the content of sphinganine. The activities of both isoforms of ceramidase were reduced in muscle in the trained group. Although the activities of SPT and SMases increased and the activity of CDases decreased, the ceramide content did not change in any of the studied muscle. Although ceramide level did not change, we noticed increased insulin sensitivity in trained animals. It is concluded that training affects the activity of key enzymes of ceramide metabolism but also activates other metabolic pathways which affect ceramide metabolism in skeletal muscles
