Review of Recent Literature Relevant to the Environmental Effects of Marine and Hydrokinetic Energy Devices; Task 2.1.3: Effects on Aquatic Organisms - Fiscal Year 2012 Progress Report
A literature search was conducted by using the Web of Science® databases component of the ISI Web of KnowledgeSM to identify recent articles that would be useful to help assess the potential environmental effects of renewable energy development in the ocean, with emphasis on seabirds and fish. Several relatively recent general review articles that included possible effects on seabirds and fish were examined to begin the search process. From these articles, several general topics of potential environmental effects on seabirds and fish were derived. These topics were used as the primary search factors. Additional sources were identified by cross-checking the Web of Science databases for articles that cited the review articles. It also became clear that the potential effects frequently

Design and simulation of a self-powered neutron spectrometer
A self-powered neutron detector (SPND) is a device that, coupled with a current meter, provides a readout proportional to neutron population. This thesis discusses the design parameters of an array of such devices, their characteristics, and the use of these devices as a self-powered neutron spectrometer (SPNS) to provide information about the energy distribution in a neutron radiation field. Neutron absorption in an appropriate material produces subsequent beta emissions. In a SPND, some of these beta particles will cross a non-conducting region and stop in a collector material. A net exchange of charge between these regions can be read as a current flowing between the emission region and the collector region. One potential SPNS design was modeled using a Monte Carlo simulation of the device's interaction with a radiation field. The Monte Carlo program used predicts the beta flux which is proportional to the current that would be produced by an actual device. Various beta emitting materials were considered for this device, and a sensitivity study of each was included. The design considered is comprised of a concentric set of these cylindrical SPND detector elements which, in themselves, are currently available technology
Stress in agile software development : practices and outcomes
Stress is an important workplace issue, affecting both the health of individuals, and the health of organizations. Early advocacy for Agile Software Development suggested it might help avoid stress, with practices that emphasize a sustainable pace, and self-organizing teams. Our analysis of a 2014 survey, however, suggested that stress might still be commonplace in Agile teams, especially for those with less experience. We also noticed that newcomers to Agile emphasized technical, rather than collaborative, practices, and speculated this might explain the stress. We explored this in our analysis of a follow-up survey conducted in 2016, and report our findings in this paper. We show that there are a variety of factors involved, and that avoiding stress is associated with both collaborative and technical practices, and a range of outcomes
The Value of PIC Cystography in Detecting De Novo and Residual Vesicoureteral Reflux after Dextranomer/Hyaluronic Acid Copolymer Injection
The endoscopic injection of Dx/HA in the management of vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) has become an accepted alternative to open surgery. In the current study we evaluated the value of cystography to detect de novo contralateral VUR in unilateral cases of VUR at the time of Dx/HA injection and correlated the findings of immediate post-Dx/HA injection cystography during the same anesthesia to 2-month postoperative VCUG to evaluate its ability to predict successful surgical outcomes. The current study aimed to evaluate whether an intraoperatively performed cystogram could replace postoperative studies. But a negative intraoperative cystogram correlates with the postoperative study in only 80%. Considering the 75–80% success rate of Dx/HA implantation, the addition of intraoperative cystograms cannot replace postoperative studies. In patients treated with unilateral VUR, PIC cystography can detect occult VUR and prevent postoperative contralateral new onset of VUR
Neutrino-induced deuteron disintegration experiment
Cross sections for the disintegration of the deuteron via neutral-current
(NCD) and charged-current (CCD) interactions with reactor antineutrinos are
measured to be 6.08 +/- 0.77 x 10^(-45) cm-sq and 9.83 +/- 2.04 x 10^(-45)
cm-sq per neutrino, respectively, in excellent agreement with current
calculations. Since the experimental NCD value depends upon the CCD value, if
we use the theoretical value for the CCD reaction, we obtain the improved value
of 5.98 +/- 0.54 x 10^(-45) for the NCD cross section. The neutral-current
reaction allows a unique measurement of the isovector-axial vector coupling
constant in the hadronic weak interaction (beta). In the standard model, this
constant is predicted to be exactly 1, independent of the Weinberg angle. We
measure a value of beta^2 = 1.01 +/- 0.16. Using the above improved value for
the NCD cross section, beta^2 becomes 0.99 +/- 0.10.Comment: 22pages, 9 figure
Reverse Genetics Modification of Cytomegalovirus Antigenicity and Immunogenicity by CD8 T-Cell Epitope Deletion and Insertion
The advent of cloning herpesviral genomes as bacterial artificial chromosomes (BACs) has made herpesviruses accessible to bacterial genetics and has thus revolutionised their mutagenesis. This opened all possibilities of reverse genetics to ask scientific questions by introducing precisely accurate mutations into the viral genome for testing their influence on the phenotype under study or to create phenotypes of interest. Here, we report on our experience with using BAC technology for a designed modulation of viral antigenicity and immunogenicity with focus on the CD8 T-cell response. One approach is replacing an intrinsic antigenic peptide in a viral carrier protein with a foreign antigenic sequence, a strategy that we have termed “orthotopic peptide swap”. Another approach is the functional deletion of an antigenic peptide by point mutation of its C-terminal MHC class-I anchor residue. We discuss the concepts and summarize recently published major scientific results obtained with immunological mutants of murine cytomegalovirus
