The contribution of the German building sector to achieve the 1.5 °C target

The melting greenhouse gas emissions budget of the German building sector for the 1.5 °C target requires fast counteraction. In this paper, an analysis of the applicable legal and regulatory framework, the funding situation as well as national and international strategies on a transformation towards climate neutrality elucidates that the suggested approaches do not take a holistic view into account. They neglect, that embodied emissions from construction and emissions from operations phases of buildings must be oriented on the remaining budget, as well as material and human resources associated with the required actions. Therefore a framework to decarbonise the German building sector with eleven recommendations for action, which addresses these findings, is developed with a panel of experts. The results clarify, that the focus must be on adapting the existing building stock since renovation processes release significantly fewer emissions than the construction of new buildings. Stricter legal requirements for building envelopes have no significant effect on the reduction of emissions. Instead, fast-acting measures, such as the usage of district heating, photovoltaics, heat pumps, the optimisation of building operation and digitalisation, must be implemented in a prioritised manner to save resources and maintain the emissions budget longer. To be able to align effective measures it is necessary to engage all Stakeholders and to establish reliable political guidance down to the building level

Clinically relevant depressive symptoms in young stroke patients - results of the sifap1 study

BACKGROUND Although post-stroke depression is widely recognized, less is known about depressive symptoms in the acute stage of stroke and especially in young stroke patients. We thus investigated depressive symptoms and their determinants in such a cohort. METHODS The Stroke in Young Fabry Patients study (sifap1) prospectively recruited a large multinational European cohort (n = 5,023) of patients with a cerebrovascular event aged 18-55. For assessing clinically relevant depressive symptoms (CRDS, defined by a BDI-score ≥18) the self-reporting Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) was obtained on inclusion in the study. Associations with baseline parameters, stroke severity (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale, NIHSS), and brain MRI findings were analyzed. RESULTS From the 2007 patients with BDI documentation, 202 (10.1%) had CRDS. CRDS were observed more frequently in women (12.6 vs. 8.2% in men, p < 0.001). Patients with CRDS more often had arterial hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and hyperlipidemia than patients without CRDS (hypertension: 58.0 vs. 47.1%, p = 0.017; diabetes mellitus: 17.9 vs. 8.9%, p < 0.001; hyperlipidemia: 40.5 vs. 32.3%, p = 0.012). In the subgroup of patients with ischemic stroke or TIA (n = 1,832) no significant associations between CRDS and cerebral MRI findings such as the presence of acute infarcts (68.1 vs. 65.8%, p = 0.666), old infarctions (63.4 vs. 62.1%, p = 0.725) or white matter hyper-intensities (51.6 vs. 53.7%, p = 0.520) were found. CONCLUSION Depressive symptoms were present in 10.1% of young stroke patients in the acute phase, and were related to risk factors but not to imaging findings

Un cas de censure politique au XVIIe siècle : la chronique de Śarṣa-Dəngəl

Abstract : The censorship appears to be a trait shared by the human tradition and the collective memory. The Ethiopian historiography is not different. Generally produced at the royal court, it was controlled by the powerful. Thus the chronicle of the Ethiopian Kings tell events that agree with the official views, which is to be taken in account by historians who want to use them as historical sources. The Chronicle of Sarsa-Dangəl offers a case of later censorship : the dramatic changes that occurred at the king's death required to modify some historical pieces referring to Sarsa-Dangəl or some of his favourites' actions. Therefore several reason to this censorship: first, the image of the king, who is now an absolute sovereign (Susanyos), has changed in the meanwhile, and it is no longer accepted that he could have listened (even in the telling of the past) the advices of his nobility; second, it is a case of damnatio memoriae of some dignitaries now out of favour. Nevertheless, the manuscript tradition of this chronicle has preserved, in some manuscripts, the original version of chapters 8 and 9. As for the evidences of practical censorship, one can notice in the ms. D'Abadie 42 that the original pages with the improper passages where probably replaced by others, written by someone else.Résumé : La censure semble bien être un trait commun à la tradition humaine et à la mémoire collective. Kropp Manfred.
