    The effect of the flexible modular schedule on student academic achievement, student behavior, and student development

    The purpose of this case study was to examine the effect the flexible modular schedule had on student achievement, student behavior, and student development. This study contained three questions that evaluated the effect flexible modular scheduling had upon academic [standardized testing analysis] and student behavior [student suspension analysis] as well as the developmental impact [faculty interviews] the schedule had on students within a particular school. A mixed methods approach was used to conduct a case study that allowed an in-depth analysis of both the qualitative and quantitative data. Quantitative findings of significance provide answers to the research questions as well as qualitative themes such as inconsistent stakeholder buy-in, student access: opportunities and challenges, and developmental outcomes, which offer insight into the impact the flexible modular schedule has had on student development. This study sought to examine the necessity for educational leaders to consider the developmental needs of students ahead of the allocation of time when structuring the school day. Recommendations for practice are presented to both the school district and high school employing the flexible modular schedule.Includes bibliographical reference

    The Real Disaster Is Above Ground: A Mine Fire and Social Conflict

    In the 1950s Centralia was a small town, like many others in the anthracite region of Pennsylvania. But since the 1960s, it has been consumed, outwardly and inwardly by a fire that has inexorably spread in the abandoned mines beneath it. The earth smokes, subsides, and breathes poisonous gases. No less destructive has been the spread of dissension and enmity among the townspeople. The Real Disaster Is Above Ground tells the story of the fire and the tragic failure of all efforts to counter it. This study of the Centralia fire represents the most thorough canvass of the documentary materials and the community that has appeared. The authors report on the futile efforts of residents to reach a common understanding of an underground threat that was not readily visible and invited multiple interpretations. They trace the hazard management strategies of government agencies that, ironically, all too often created additional threats to the welfare of Centralians. They report on the birth and demise of community organizations, each with its own solution to the problem and its diehard partisans. The final solution, now being put into effect, is to abandon the town and relocate its people. Centraliaā€™s environmental disaster, the authors argue, is not a local or isolated phenomenon. It warns of the danger lurking in our own technology when safeguards fail and disaster management policy is not in place to respond to failure, as the examples of Chernobyl and Bhopal have clearly demonstrated. The lessons in this study of the fate of a small town in Pennsylvania are indeed sobering. They should be pondered by a variety of social scientists and planners, by all those dealing with the behavior of people under stress and those responsible for the welfare of the public. J.     The endemic gastropod fauna of Lake Titicaca : correlation between molecular evolution and hydrographic history

    Lake Titicaca, situated in the Altiplano high plateau, is the only ancient lake in South America. This 2- to 3-My-old (where My is million years) water body has had a complex history that included at least five major hydrological phases during the Pleistocene. It is generally assumed that these physical events helped shape the evolutionary history of the lakeĀ“s biota. Herein, we study an endemic species assemblage in Lake Titicaca, composed of members of the microgastropod genus Heleobia, to determine whether the lake has functioned as a reservoir of relic species or the site of local diversification, to evaluate congruence of the regional paleohydrology and the evolutionary history of this assemblage, and to assess whether the geographic distributions of endemic lineages are hierarchical. Our phylogenetic analyses indicate that the Titicaca/Altiplano Heleobia fauna (together with few extralimital taxa) forms a species flock. A molecular clock analysis suggests that the most recent common ancestor (MRCAs) of the Altiplano taxa evolved 0.53 (0.28Ā–0.80) My ago and the MRCAs of the Altiplano taxa and their extralimital sister group 0.92 (0.46Ā–1.52) My ago. The endemic species of Lake Titicaca are younger than the lake itself, implying primarily intralacustrine speciation. Moreover, the timing of evolutionary branching events and the ages of two precursors of Lake Titicaca, lakes Cabana and BalliviĆ”n, is congruent. Although Lake Titicaca appears to have been the principal site of speciation for the regional Heleobia fauna, the contemporary spatial patterns of endemism have been masked by immigration and/or emigration events of local riverine taxa, which we attribute to the unstable hydrographic history of the Altiplano. Thus, a hierarchical distribution of endemism is not evident, but instead there is a single genetic break between two regional clades. We also discuss our findings in relation to studies of other regional biota and suggest that salinity tolerance was the most likely limiting factor in the evolution of Altiplano species flocks

    Zones of Gelatinous Fibers in Populus Balsamifera L.

    Although balsam poplar (Populus balsamifera L.) is a logical supplement to the aspen (Fopulus tremuloides Michx.) resource for the manufacture of oriented strandboard (OSB), it has not been utilized extensively because of reported machining problems. The machining difficulties usually have been attributed to fibers with thick gelatinous layers in their cell walls. This study employed scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to observe the cell-wall structure of balsam poplar grown in Minnesota. In a previous study, balsam poplar samples were identified as difficult to waferize on the basis of wood fibers plugging the waferizing knives. The balsam poplar samples that were difficult to waferize often contained areas that appeared as "white rings" to the naked eye. Observation with the scanning electron microscope revealed that the "white rings" in the wood were zones that contained very high concentrations of gelatinous fibers. In these fibers, the cell wall typically consisted of a gelatinous layer that occupied 30 to 90% of the cell wall. In most cases, the initiation and termination of zones with high concentrations of gelatinous fibers took place within one annual growth increment or slightly more. Additional observation of trees within the sample showed that the "white rings" and the accompanying high concentrations of gelatinous layers were usually restricted to one side of the tree. This observation has led us to believe that the "white ring" areas and the corresponding zones of gelatinous fibers were the result of tension wood formation in the balsam poplar trees and not a part of normal wood formation

    Transcriptomic and proteomic analyses of the Aspergillus fumigatus hypoxia response using an oxygen-controlled fermenter

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p><it>Aspergillus fumigatus </it>is a mold responsible for the majority of cases of aspergillosis in humans. To survive in the human body, <it>A. fumigatus </it>must adapt to microenvironments that are often characterized by low nutrient and oxygen availability. Recent research suggests that the ability of <it>A. fumigatus </it>and other pathogenic fungi to adapt to hypoxia contributes to their virulence. However, molecular mechanisms of <it>A. fumigatus </it>hypoxia adaptation are poorly understood. Thus, to better understand how <it>A. fumigatus </it>adapts to hypoxic microenvironments found <it>in vivo </it>during human fungal pathogenesis, the dynamic changes of the fungal transcriptome and proteome in hypoxia were investigated over a period of 24 hours utilizing an oxygen-controlled fermenter system.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Significant increases in transcripts associated with iron and sterol metabolism, the cell wall, the GABA shunt, and transcriptional regulators were observed in response to hypoxia. A concomitant reduction in transcripts was observed with ribosome and terpenoid backbone biosynthesis, TCA cycle, amino acid metabolism and RNA degradation. Analysis of changes in transcription factor mRNA abundance shows that hypoxia induces significant positive and negative changes that may be important for regulating the hypoxia response in this pathogenic mold. Growth in hypoxia resulted in changes in the protein levels of several glycolytic enzymes, but these changes were not always reflected by the corresponding transcriptional profiling data. However, a good correlation overall (R<sup>2 </sup>= 0.2, p < 0.05) existed between the transcriptomic and proteomics datasets for all time points. The lack of correlation between some transcript levels and their subsequent protein levels suggests another regulatory layer of the hypoxia response in <it>A. fumigatus</it>.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Taken together, our data suggest a robust cellular response that is likely regulated both at the transcriptional and post-transcriptional level in response to hypoxia by the human pathogenic mold <it>A. fumigatus</it>. As with other pathogenic fungi, the induction of glycolysis and transcriptional down-regulation of the TCA cycle and oxidative phosphorylation appear to major components of the hypoxia response in this pathogenic mold. In addition, a significant induction of the transcripts involved in ergosterol biosynthesis is consistent with previous observations in the pathogenic yeasts <it>Candida albicans </it>and <it>Cryptococcus neoformans </it>indicating conservation of this response to hypoxia in pathogenic fungi. Because ergosterol biosynthesis enzymes also require iron as a co-factor, the increase in iron uptake transcripts is consistent with an increased need for iron under hypoxia. However, unlike <it>C. albicans </it>and <it>C. neoformans</it>, the GABA shunt appears to play an important role in reducing NADH levels in response to hypoxia in <it>A. fumigatus </it>and it will be intriguing to determine whether this is critical for fungal virulence. Overall, regulatory mechanisms of the <it>A. fumigatus </it>hypoxia response appear to involve both transcriptional and post-transcriptional control of transcript and protein levels and thus provide candidate genes for future analysis of their role in hypoxia adaptation and fungal virulence.</p
