INVESTIGATION OF SEGMENTAL CHARACTERISTICS IN POWERFUL SOCCER HEADING

The aim of this study was to investigate segmental characteristics of the jumping header in soccer, with prime focus on the arms, legs and the head. To accomplish this a standardization of the skill was also created. Five skilled subjects impacted soccer balls delivered at 13.1 [±0.22] m/s from a ball canon. The body and ball movement were video filmed at 120/240 Hz. It was concluded that the head accelerates forward, relative to the torso, throughout the impact phase and that the mass impacting the ball (13.8 % of the whole body mass) was a significant larger mass than the head's mass alone. Furthermore, the segmental angular momentum of the legs indicated that these segments were used mechanically well in the execution of the skill, while this was not the case with the arms. From the development of the segmental velocity and angular momentum throughout the heading phase, it could also be concluded, that the over all timing of the skill was not optimum

New optimized technique for mechanical control of Elymus repens

    Get PDF
Elymus repens (coach grass) is traditionally controlled by repeated and prolonged stubble cultivation. However, the efficacy is strongly depending on weather and secondly on the exposure of rhizomes. The shorter the required period of cultivation stays the more compliance with the objective in organic farming where farmers aim at minimizing leaching of nutrients by keeping the soil plant-covered during autumn and winter. Effective technique and strategies for uprooting, exposing and destroying Elymus repens are needed. In a Danish organic research project the focus is on technological solutions for uprooting, exposing and destroying of the rhizomes within a short time span. Machines of standard type, modified machines and machines constructed for other purposes have been studied. The results show that it is difficult to achieve a high percentage of uprooting when using machines giving a high area capacity, e.g. spring loaded tine cultivator and rigid tine cultivator with modified spike discs at the rear

Environmental Improvement Potentials of Meat and Dairy Products

    Get PDF
The report is a scientific contribution to the European Commission¿s Integrated Product Policy framework, which seeks to minimise the environmental degradation caused throughout the life cycle of products. This report first presents a systematic overview of the life cycle of meat and dairy products and their environmental impacts, covering the full food chain. It goes on to provide a comprehensive analysis of the improvement options that allow reducing the environmental impacts throughout the life cycle. Finally, the report assesses the different options regarding their feasibility as well as their potential environmental and socioeconomic benefits and costs. The report shows that meat and dairy products contribute on average 24% to the environmental impacts from the total final consumption in EU-27, while constituting only 6% of the economic value. The main improvement options were identified in agricultural production, in food management by households (avoidance of food wastage), and related to power savings. When all environmental improvement potentials are taken together, the aggregated environmental impacts (external costs) of meat and dairy products may be reduced by about 20%.JRC.J.2-Competitiveness and Sustainabilit

Empirically analysing design reasoning patterns: Abductive-deductive reasoning patterns dominate design idea generation

    Get PDF
Reasoning is a fundamental process in design activity, and it provides a way to understand design behaviour. Theories and models of design propose reasoning that follows abductive-deductive patterns. At the micro-level, these patterns are untested. This study analyses verbal reasoning patterns at the micro-level for group idea generation using protocol analyses of concurrent verbalisations from five design teams with industry participants. The results show that reasoning in design activity across 218 ideas follows general patterns of abductive-deductive reasoning. At the individual idea level, the reasoning patterns are disorderly and enter into micro-patterns of inference. The study concludes that understanding reasoning at early-stage idea generation processes is indicative of the mental models and abductive-deductive reasoning that are prevalent in design activity
