Some remarks on the hyperelliptic moduli of genus 3

In 1967, Shioda \cite{Shi1} determined the ring of invariants of binary octavics and their syzygies using the symbolic method. We discover that the syzygies determined in \cite{Shi1} are incorrect. In this paper, we compute the correct equations among the invariants of the binary octavics and give necessary and sufficient conditions for two genus 3 hyperelliptic curves to be isomorphic over an algebraically closed field kk, chk2,3,5,7\ch k \neq 2, 3, 5, 7. For the first time, an explicit equation of the hyperelliptic moduli for genus 3 is computed in terms of absolute invariants.Comment: arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1209.044

New limit for the half-life of double beta decay of 94^{94}Zr to the first excited state of 94^{94}Mo

Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay is a phenomenon of fundamental interest in particle physics. The decay rates of double beta decay transitions to the excited states can provide input for Nuclear Transition Matrix Element calculations for the relevant two neutrino double beta decay process. It can be useful as supplementary information for the calculation of Nuclear Transition Matrix Element for the neutrinoless double beta decay process. In the present work, double beta decay of 94^{94}Zr to the 21+2^{+}_{1} excited state of 94^{94}Mo at 871.1 keV is studied using a low background \sim 230 cm3^3 HPGe detector. No evidence of this decay was found with a 232 g.y exposure of natural Zirconium. The lower half-life limit obtained for the double beta decay of 94Zr\rm^{94}Zr to the 21+2^{+}_{1} excited state of 94Mo\rm^{94}Mo is T1/2(0ν+2ν)>3.4×1019T_{1/2} (0\nu + 2\nu)> 3.4 \times 10^{19} y at 90% C.L., an improvement by a factor of \sim 4 over the existing experimental limit at 90\% C.L. The sensitivity is estimated to be T1/2(0ν+2ν)>2.0×1019T_{1/2} (0\nu + 2\nu) > 2.0\times10^{19} y at 90% C.L. using the Feldman-Cousins method.Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures, Accepted in Eur. Phys. J.

Randomized trial of two different conditioning regimens for bone marrow transplantation in thalassemia - the role of busulfan pharmacokinetics in determining outcome

In total, 94 patients with homozygous beta thalassemia were randomized to two different conditioning regimens: busulfan 600 mg/m2+cyclophosphamide 200 mg/kg or busulfan 16 mg/kg+cyclophosphamide 200 mg/kg and antilymphocyte globulin (47 in each group), for bone marrow transplantation, to see whether increased myeloablation or increased immunosuppression would reduce rejection. Busulfan pharmacokinetics in determining outcome was evaluated. There was no significant difference in engraftment, graft-versus-host disease, rejection, and overall and disease-free survival in the two groups. Systemic exposure to busulfan was significantly higher in the 600 mg/m2 group, but in both groups there was a wide interindividual variation in the busulfan kinetics. Six patients rejected the graft, two in the busulfan 600 mg group and four in busulfan 16 mg group (P=0.677 CI -0.17, 0.07), but in five patients (pharmacokinetic data not available in one patient) who rejected the graft busulfan first dose trough level (Cmin-1) was below 150 ng/ml while it was above this level in the 66 of 68 patients with successful engraftment (P0.001). This randomized trial shows that rejection is influenced by busulfan levels and suggests that monitoring of busulfan levels and dose adjustment based on first-dose kinetics may reduce the risk of rejection

Ideotype concept in black pepper (Piper nigrum L.)

    Get PDF
An attempt has been made to describe the crop ideotype characteristics for black pepper(Piper nigrum). It is proposed that the black pepper ideotype should have acute branch angles(450) at the top and more wider branch angles at the bottom (600). The fruiting branchesshould be well spread from top to bottom of the canopy.  To harvest maximum light especiallyby the bottom canopy, the leaf angle should be more at the bottom (130-1400) compared tothe top (100-1100). It is desirable that within a branch, the bottom leaves have lengthierpetioles than the top leaves. The vine should have a high photosynthetic rate (minimum of3.0–3.5 μ moles), more than 90% bisexual flowers with >95% self pollination, increased spikelength (≥12 cm) and more number of berries spike-1 (≥70). Fruit set should be  ≥80% andshould yield at least 2.5–3.0 kg dry berries vine-1. Among the cultivars/varieties studied,Panniyur 1 was found to possess more number of traits for the proposed ideotype comparedto other cultivars/varieties. &nbsp

Liquid Xenon Detectors for Positron Emission Tomography

PET is a functional imaging technique based on detection of annihilation photons following beta decay producing positrons. In this paper, we present the concept of a new PET system for preclinical applications consisting of a ring of twelve time projection chambers filled with liquid xenon viewed by avalanche photodiodes. Simultaneous measurement of ionization charge and scintillation light leads to a significant improvement to spatial resolution, image quality, and sensitivity. Simulated performance shows that an energy resolution of <10% (FWHM) and a sensitivity of 15% are achievable. First tests with a prototype TPC indicate position resolution <1 mm (FWHM).Comment: Paper presented at the International Nuclear Physics Conference, Vancouver, Canada, 201

Effective Scheduling of Multi-Load Automated Guided Vehicle in Spinning Mill: A Case Study

    Get PDF
In the Flexible Manufacturing System (FMS), where material processing is carried out in the form of tasks from one department to another, the use of Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) is significant. The application of multiple-load AGVs can be understood to boost FMS throughput by multiple orders of magnitude. For the transportation of materials and items inside a warehouse or manufacturing plant, an AGV, a mobile robot, offers extraordinary industrial capabilities. The technique of allocating AGVs to tasks while taking into account the cost and time of operations is known as AGV scheduling. Most research has exclusively addressed single-objective optimization, whereas multi-objective scheduling of AGVs is a complex combinatorial process without a single solution, in contrast to single-objective scheduling. This paper presents the integrated Local Search Probability-based Memetic Water Cycle (LSPM-WC) algorithm using a spinning mill as a case study. The scheduling model’s goal is to maximize machine efficiency. The scheduling of the statistical tests demonstrated the applicability of the proposed model in lowering the makespan and fitness values. The mean AGV operating efficiency was higher than the other estimated models, and the LSPM-WC surpassed the different algorithms to produce the best result

Transition metal saccharide chemistry and biology: syntheses, characterization, solution stability and putative bio-relevant studies of iron-saccharide complexes

A number of Fe(III) complexes of saccharides and their derivatives, and those of ascorbic acid were synthesized, and characterized by a variety of analytical, spectral (FT-IR, UV-Vis, EPR, Mossbauer and EXAFS), magnetic and electrochemical techniques. Results obtained from various methods have shown good correlations. Data obtained from EPR, magnetic susceptibility and EXAFS techniques could be fitted well with the mono-, di- and trinuclear nature of the complexes. The solution stability of these complexes has been established using UV-Vis absorption and cyclic voltammetric techniques as a function of pH of the solution. Mixed valent, Fe(II,III) ascorbate complexes have also been synthesized and characterized. Reductive release of Fe(II) from the complexes using sodium dithionite has been addressed. In vitro absorption of Fe(III)-glucose complex has been studied using everted sacs of rat intestines and the results have been compared with that of simple ferric chloride. Fe(III)-saccharide complexes have shown regular protein synthesis even in hemin-deficient rabbit reticulocyte lysate indicating that these complexes play a role that is equivalent to that played by hemin in order to restore the normal synthesis of protein. These complexes have exhibited enhanced DNA cleavage properties in the presence of hydrogen peroxide with pUC-18 DNA plasmid
