    Topological Transitions in Metamaterials

    The ideas of mathematical topology play an important role in many aspects of modern physics - from phase transitions to field theory to nonlinear dynamics (Nakahara M (2003) in Geometry, Topology and Physics, ed Brewer DF (IOP Publishing Ltd, Bristol and Philadelphia), Monastryskiy M (1987) in Riemann Topology and Physics, (Birkhauser Verlag AG)). An important example of this is the Lifshitz transition (Lifshitz IM (1960) Anomalies of electron characteristics of a metal in the high-pressure region, Sov Phys JETP 11: 1130-1135), where the transformation of the Fermi surface of a metal from a closed to an open geometry (due to e.g. external pressure) leads to a dramatic effect on the electron magneto-transport (Kosevich AM (2004) Topology and solid-state physics. Low Temp Phys 30: 97-118). Here, we present the optical equivalent of the Lifshitz transition in strongly anisotropic metamaterials. When one of the components of the dielectric permittivity tensor of such a composite changes sign, the corresponding iso-frequency surface transforms from an ellipsoid to a hyperboloid. Since the photonic density of states can be related to the volume enclosed by the iso-frequency surface, such a topological transition in a metamaterial leads to a dramatic change in the photonic density of states, with a resulting effect on every single physical parameter related to the metamaterial - from thermodynamic quantities such as its equilibrium electromagnetic energy to the nonlinear optical response to quantum-electrodynamic effects such as spontaneous emission. In the present paper, we demonstrate the modification of spontaneous light emission from quantum dots placed near the surface of the metamaterial undergoing the topological Lifshitz transition, and present the theoretical description of the effect

    Pharmacokinetics of oral busulphan in children with beta thalassaemia major undergoing allogeneic bone marrow transplantation

    The pharmacokinetics of busulphan were studied in 23 thalassaemic children undergoing BMT. Patients received busulphan at a dose of either 16 mg/kg with cyclophosphamide and ATG (Group A) or 600 mg/m2 (with cyclophosphamide alone) (Group B) in 16 divided doses every 6 h over 4 days. Busulphan levels were analyzed by a modified GC-MS method. The dose of busulphan/kg for patients in group B was 64% (range 56-71%) higher than that for patients in group A. The mean AUC, Css, Cmax and MRV were significantly higher in group B as compared with group A for both doses 1 and 13. There was no significant difference in Vd/F, T1/2 and Kel between the two groups. A significant decrease in AUC and Css was found between 1st and 13th doses in group B, but not in group A. The Cl/F values in group A were significantly higher than those in group B after dose 1, but not after dose 13. No increase in toxicity due to the higher dose of busulphan was noted. We conclude that busulphan at 600 mg/m2 results in much higher systemic exposure to the drug as compared to 16 mg/kg, without increase in toxicity in children with beta thalassaemia major

    Liquid Xenon Detectors for Positron Emission Tomography

    PET is a functional imaging technique based on detection of annihilation photons following beta decay producing positrons. In this paper, we present the concept of a new PET system for preclinical applications consisting of a ring of twelve time projection chambers filled with liquid xenon viewed by avalanche photodiodes. Simultaneous measurement of ionization charge and scintillation light leads to a significant improvement to spatial resolution, image quality, and sensitivity. Simulated performance shows that an energy resolution of <10% (FWHM) and a sensitivity of 15% are achievable.     Discovering High-Utility Itemsets at Multiple Abstraction Levels

    High-Utility Itemset Mining (HUIM) is a relevant data mining task. The goal is to discover recurrent combinations of items characterized by high prot from transactional datasets. HUIM has a wide range of applications among which market basket analysis and service proling. Based on the observation that items can be clustered into domain-specic categories, a parallel research issue is generalized itemset mining. It entails generating correlations among data items at multiple abstraction levels. The extraction of multiple-level patterns affords new insights into the analyzed data from dierent viewpoints. This paper aims at discovering a novel pattern that combines the expressiveness of generalized and High-Utility itemsets. According to a user-defined taxonomy items are rst aggregated into semantically related categories. Then, a new type of pattern,namely the Generalized High-utility Itemset (GHUI), is extracted. It represents a combinations of items at different granularity levels characterized by high prot (utility). While protable combinations of item categories provide interesting high-level information, GHUIs at lower abstraction levels represent more specic correlationsamong protable items. A single-phase algorithm is proposed to efficiently discover utility itemsets at multiple abstraction levels. The experiments, which were performed on both real and synthetic data, demonstrate the effectiveness and usefulness of the proposed approach

    Vaccine-Induced Subcutaneous Granulomas in Goats Reflect Differences in Host–Mycobacterium Interactions between BCG- and Recombinant BCG-Derivative Vaccines

    Tuberculous granulomas are highly dynamic structures reflecting the complex host–mycobacterium interactions. The objective of this study was to compare granuloma development at the site of vaccination with BCG and its recombinant derivatives in goats. To characterize the host response, epithelioid cells, multinucleated giant cells (MNGC), T cell subsets, B cells, plasma cells, dendritic cells and mycobacterial antigen were labelled by immunohistochemistry, and lipids and acid-fast bacteria (AFB) were labelled by specific staining. Granulomas with central caseous necrosis developed at the injection site of most goats though lesion size and extent of necrosis differed between vaccine strains. CD4(+) T and B cells were more scarce and CD8(+) cells were more numerous in granulomas induced by recombinant derivatives compared to their parental BCG strain. Further, the numbers of MNGCs and cells with lipid bodies were markedly lower in groups administered with recombinant BCG strains. Microscopic detection of AFB and mycobacterial antigen was rather frequent in the area of central necrosis, however, the isolation of bacteria in culture was rarely successful. In summary, BCG and its recombinant derivatives induced reproducibly subcutaneous caseous granulomas in goats that can be easily monitored and surgically removed for further studies. The granulomas reflected the genetic modifications of the recombinant BCG-derivatives and are therefore suitable models to compare reactions to different mycobacteria or TB vaccines

    Genetic diversity analysis of Myristica and related genera using RAPD and ISSR markers

    Genetic diversity among seven species of Myristica, two of its related genera and an unidentified species was analyzed using 46 PCR markers (30 RAPD and 16 ISSR). This is the first study on molecular genetic diversity of the rare, endangered and endemic Myristica species and its related genera. RAPD and ISSR analyses yielded 497 and 262 bands with 98.1% and 97.3% polymorphism, respectively. By combining markers, a total of 759 bands were detected of which 743 (97.8%) were polymorphic with an average of 16.1 bands per primer. High level of existing genetic variability was evident from the high percentage of polymorphism. Combined analysis of RAPD and ISSR markers resulted in better distinction of species. The mean polymorphic information content (PIC) indicated that both the marker systems are effective in detecting polymorphism either individually or in combination. Similarity coefficient (Jaccards) varied from 0.22 to 0.62 when markers were combined and the pattern was similar to RAPD with a high Mantel matrix correlation (r=0.95). Principal Coordinates Analysis (PCA) conformed to cluster analyses. First three most informative PC components explained 51.1%, 49.3% and 46.5% of total variation. A maximum similarity of (63%) was observed between Gymnocranthera canarica and the unidentified species of Myristica. Knema andamanica and Myristica prainii were found to be the most distinct (17.7%). Similarities at molecular level were close to either the morphological traits (mace and fruit/seed characters) or the geographical location. Species specific bands could be identified from all the accessions under study, which has the potential for development into SCAR (Sequence Characterised Amplified Region) markers for genotype fingerprinting or development of specific DNA probes for identification and authentication. &nbsp
