Eddy Currents in the NSLS Vacuum Chamber

As the applied magnetic fields are increased during acceleration, eddy currents are induced in the vacuum chamber. These result in magnetic field perturbations which we shall estimate for the Booster and X-Ray Rings. Our calculation follows that of Asner, in particular, we use image currents to satisfy the boundary conditions imposed by the iron poles of the magnets. The strength of the magnetic field perturbations is roughly three times greater with the iron poles present than absent

Anomalously high potentials observed on ISEE

Data from two electric field experiments and from the plasma composition experiment on ISEE-1 are used to show that the spacecraft charged to close to -70 V in sunlight at 0700 UT on March 17, 1978. Data from the electron spectrometer experiment show that there was a potential barrier of -10 to -20 V about the spacecraft during this event. The potential barrier was effective in turning back emitted photoelectrons to the spacecraft. The stringent electrostatic cleanliness specifications imposed on ISEE make the presence of differential charging unlikely. Modeling of this event is required to determine if the barrier was produced by the presence of space charge

Impedance of Electron Beam Vacuum Chambers for the Nsls-Ii Storage Ring.

In this paper we discuss computation of the coupling impedance of the vacuum chambers for the NSLS-II storage ring using the electromagnetic simulator GdfidL [1]. The impedance of the vacuum chambers depends on the geometric dimensions of the cross-section and height of the slot in the chamber wall. Of particular concern is the complex geometry of the infrared extraction chambers to be installed in special large-gap dipole magnets. In this case, wakefields are generated due to tapered transitions and large vertical-aperture ports with mirrors near the electron beam
