On the role of turbulent large-scale streaks in generating sediment ridges

    Get PDF
The role of turbulent large-scale streaks or large-scale motions in forming subaqueous sediment ridges on an initially flat sediment bed is investigated with the aid of particle resolved direct numerical simulations of open channel flow at bulk Reynolds numbers up to 9500. The regular arrangement of quasi-streamwise ridges and troughs at a characteristic spanwise spacing between 1 and 1.5 times the mean fluid height is found to be a consequence of the spanwise organisation of turbulence in large-scale streamwise velocity streaks. Ridges predominantly appear in regions of weaker erosion below large-scale low-speed streaks and vice versa for troughs. The interaction between the dynamics of the large-scale streaks in the bulk flow and the evolution of sediment ridges on the sediment bed is best described as ‘top-down’ process, as the arrangement of the sediment bedforms is seen to adapt to changes in the outer flow with a time delay of several bulk time units. The observed ‘top-down’ interaction between the outer flow and the bed agrees fairly well with the conceptual model on causality in canonical channel flows proposed by Jiménez (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 842, 2018, P1, § 5.6). Mean secondary currents of Prandtl\u27s second kind of comparable intensity and lateral spacing are found over developed sediment ridges and in single-phase smooth-wall channels alike in averages over O(10) bulk time units. This indicates that the secondary flow commonly observed together with sediment ridges is the statistical footprint of the regularly organised large-scale streaks

Supersaturation in the Wake of a Precipitating Hydrometeor and its Impact on Aerosol Activation

The secondary activation of aerosols impacts the life cycle of a cloud. A detailed understanding is necessary for reliable climate prediction. Recent laboratory experiments demonstrate that aerosols can be activated in the wake of precipitating hydrometeors. However, many quantitative aspects of this wake-induced activation remain unclear. Here, we report a detailed numerical investigation of the activation potential of wake-induced supersaturation. By Lagrangian tracking of aerosols we show that a significant fraction of aerosols are activated in the supersaturated wake. These 'lucky aerosols' are entrained in the wake's vortices and reside in the supersaturated environment sufficiently long to be activated. Our analyses show that wake-induced activation can contribute at a level similar to other well known secondary production processes

Building synthetic worlds: lessons from the excessive infatuation and oversold disillusionment with the Metaverse

The metaverse comprises a range of technologies offering shared digital experiences based on immersive virtual worlds or decentralised economies. Brands, Big Tech, and investors made huge investments in the metaverse, but users did not share their excitement and the bubble duly burst. We explore this story by drawing on a wide range of data sources and first-hand knowledge. We consider the metaverse as a set of overlapping, partly competing ecosystems and expand the lens of industry architecture to Ecosystem Architecture to examine the rules, roles, and responsibilities involved. We find that incumbent firms rushed to embrace the metaverse in the hope of pre-empting disruption and safeguarding their competitive position, leading to over-investment. Greed among ecosystem orchestrators impeded contributors from creating value, while persistent technological shortcomings impaired the user experience. Our study throws new light on the dynamics of innovation and technology hypes and the challenges involved in cultivating and coordinating ecosystems

Kaspar Schott’s “encyclopedia of all mathematical sciences”

In 1661, Kaspar Schott published his comprehensive textbook “Cursus mathematicus” in Würzburg for the first time, his “Encyclopedia of all mathematical sciences”. It was so successful that it was published again in 1674 and 1677. In its 28 books, Schott gave an introduction for beginners in 22 mathematical disciplines by means of 533 figures and numerous tables. He wanted to avoid the shortness and the unintelligibility of his predecessors Alsted and Hérigone. He cited or recommended far more than hundred authors, among them Protestants like Michael Stifel and Johannes Kepler, but also Catholics like Nicolaus Copernicus. The paper gives a survey of this work and explains especially interesting aspects: The dedication to the German emperor Leopold I., Athanasius Kircher’s letter of recommendation as well as Schott’s classification of sciences, explanations regarding geometry, astronomy, and algebra

Thyroid hormone metabolism and environmental chemical exposure

Abstract

Background

Polychlorinated dioxins and –furans (PCDD/Fs) and polychlorinated-biphenyls (PCBs) are environmental toxicants that have been proven to influence thyroid metabolism both in animal studies and in human beings. In recent years polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) also have been found to have a negative influence on thyroid hormone metabolism. The lower brominated flame retardants are now banned in the EU, however higher brominated decabromo-diphenyl ether (DBDE) and the brominated flame retardant hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) are not yet banned. They too can negatively influence thyroid hormone metabolism. An additional brominated flame retardant that is still in use is tetrabromobisphenol-A (TBBPA), which has also been shown to influence thyroid hormone metabolism.

Influences of brominated flame retardants, PCDD/F’s and dioxin like-PCBs (dl-PCB’s) on thyroid hormone metabolism in adolescence in the Netherlands will be presented in this study and determined if there are reasons for concern to human health for these toxins. In the period 1987-1991, a cohort of mother-baby pairs was formed in order to detect abnormalities in relation to dioxin levels in the perinatal period. The study demonstrated that PCDD/Fs were found around the time of birth, suggesting a modulation of the setpoint of thyroid hormone metabolism with a higher 3,3’, 5,5’tetrathyroxine (T4) levels and an increased thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH). While the same serum thyroid hormone tests (- TSH and T4) were again normal by 2 years of age and were still normal at 8-12 years, adolescence is a period with extra stress on thyroid hormone metabolism. Therefore we measured serum levels of TSH, T4, 3,3’,5- triiodothyronine (T3), free T4 (FT4), antibodies and thyroxine-binding globulin (TBG) in our adolescent cohort.

Methods

Vena puncture was performed to obtain samples for the measurement of thyroid hormone metabolism related parameters and the current serum dioxin (PCDD/Fs), PCB and PBDE levels.

Results

The current levels of T3 were positively correlated to BDE-99. A positive trend with FT4 and BDE-99 was also seen, while a positive correlation with T3 and dl-PCB was also seen. No correlation with TBG was seen for any of the contaminants. Neither the prenatal nor the current PCDD/F levels showed a relationship with the thyroid parameters in this relatively small group.

Conclusion

Once again the thyroid hormone metabolism (an increase in T3) seems to have been influenced by current background levels of common environmental contaminants: dl-PCBs and BDE-99. T3 is a product of target organs and abnormalities might indicate effects on hormone transporters and could cause pathology. While the influence on T3 levels may have been compensated, because the adolescents functioned normal at the time of the study period, it is questionable if this compensation is enough for all organs depending on thyroid hormones.</p
