The convective storm initiation project
Copyright @ 2007 AMSThe Convective Storm Initiation Project (CSIP) is an international project to understand precisely where, when, and how convective clouds form and develop into showers in the mainly maritime environment of southern England. A major aim of CSIP is to compare the results of the very high resolution Met Office weather forecasting model with detailed observations of the early stages of convective clouds and to use the newly gained understanding to improve the predictions of the model. A large array of ground-based instruments plus two instrumented aircraft, from the U.K. National Centre for Atmospheric Science (NCAS) and the German Institute for Meteorology and Climate Research (IMK), Karlsruhe, were deployed in southern England, over an area centered on the meteorological radars at Chilbolton, during the summers of 2004 and 2005. In addition to a variety of ground-based remote-sensing instruments, numerous rawin-sondes were released at one- to two-hourly intervals from six closely spaced sites. The Met Office weather radar network and Meteosat satellite imagery were used to provide context for the observations made by the instruments deployed during CSIP. This article presents an overview of the CSIP field campaign and examples from CSIP of the types of convective initiation phenomena that are typical in the United Kingdom. It shows the way in which certain kinds of observational data are able to reveal these phenomena and gives an explanation of how the analyses of data from the field campaign will be used in the development of an improved very high resolution NWP model for operational use.This work is funded by the National Environment Research Council following an initial award from the HEFCE Joint Infrastructure Fund
Co-designing inflammatory bowel disease (Ibd) services in Scotland : findings from a nationwide survey
Background: The Scottish Government’s ambition is to ensure that health services are co-designed with the
communities they serve. Crohn’s and Colitis UK and the Scottish Government acknowledged the need to review
and update the current IBD care model. An online survey was conducted asking IBD patients about their
experiences of the NHS care they receive. This survey was the first step of co-designing and developing a national
strategy for IBD service improvement in Scotland.
Aim: To explore IBD patients’ experiences of current services and make recommendations for future service
development.
Methods: This study was part of a wider cross-sectional on-line survey. Participants were patients with IBD across
Scotland. 777 people with IBD took part in the survey. Thematic analysis of all data was conducted independently
by two researchers.
Results: Three key themes emerged:
Quality of life: Participants highlighted the impact the disease has on quality of life and the desperate need for IBD
services to address this more holistically.
IBD clinicians and access: Participants recognised the need for more IBD nurses and gastroenterologists along with
better access to them. Those with a named IBD nurse reported to be more satisfied with their care.
An explicit IBD care pathway: Patients with IBD identified the need of making the IBD care pathway more explicit to
service users.
Conclusions: Participants expressed the need for a more holistic approach to their IBD care. This includes
integrating psychological, counselling and dietetic services into IBD care with better access to IBD clinicians and a
more explicit IBD care pathway.

The Drosophila Gap Gene Network Is Composed of Two Parallel Toggle Switches
Drosophila “gap” genes provide the first response to maternal gradients in the early fly embryo. Gap genes are expressed in a series of broad bands across the embryo during first hours of development. The gene network controlling the gap gene expression patterns includes inputs from maternal gradients and mutual repression between the gap genes themselves. In this study we propose a modular design for the gap gene network, involving two relatively independent network domains. The core of each network domain includes a toggle switch corresponding to a pair of mutually repressive gap genes, operated in space by maternal inputs. The toggle switches present in the gap network are evocative of the phage lambda switch, but they are operated positionally (in space) by the maternal gradients, so the synthesis rates for the competing components change along the embryo anterior-posterior axis. Dynamic model, constructed based on the proposed principle, with elements of fractional site occupancy, required 5–7 parameters to fit quantitative spatial expression data for gap gradients. The identified model solutions (parameter combinations) reproduced major dynamic features of the gap gradient system and explained gap expression in a variety of segmentation mutants
Social Media Collaboration in Software Projects
Social media has had a big impact on the way that software projects are managed and the way that stakeholders interact with each other: indeed, the nature of soft-ware projects has evolved substantially in keeping with the evolution of technology. A direct consequence of the ubiquity of the internet is the increasing trend towards cooperation outside the boundaries of an office. The interactions involved in soft-ware projects have changed accordingly and can be broadly divided into two types (1) interactions among stakeholders who are in a single location, (for example people sharing the same office space) and (2) interactions among stakeholders who are in distributed locations (for example software projects which are partly implemented offshore). Social media has been and remains a significant facilitator to these kinds of interactions. This chapter looks at the implications of the use of social media in 21st Century software projects
A retrospective analysis of glycol and toxic alcohol ingestion: utility of anion and osmolal gaps
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Patients ingesting ethylene glycol, isopropanol, methanol, and propylene glycol ('toxic alcohols') often present with non-specific signs and symptoms. Definitive diagnosis of toxic alcohols has traditionally been by gas chromatography (GC), a technique not commonly performed on-site in hospital clinical laboratories. The objectives of this retrospective study were: 1) to assess the diagnostic accuracy of the osmolal gap in screening for toxic alcohol ingestion and 2) to determine the common reasons other than toxic alcohol ingestion for elevated osmolal gaps.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Electronic medical records from an academic tertiary care medical center were searched to identify all patients in the time period from January 1, 1996 to September 1, 2010 who had serum/plasma ethanol, glucose, sodium, blood urea nitrogen, and osmolality measured simultaneously, and also all patients who had GC analysis for toxic alcohols. Detailed chart review was performed on all patients with osmolal gap of 9 or greater.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>In the study period, 20,669 patients had determination of serum/plasma ethanol and osmolal gap upon presentation to the hospitals. There were 341 patients with an osmolal gap greater than 14 (including correction for estimated contribution of ethanol) on initial presentation to the medical center. Seventy-seven patients tested positive by GC for one or more toxic alcohols; all had elevated anion gap or osmolal gap or both. Other than toxic alcohols, the most common causes for an elevated osmolal gap were recent heavy ethanol consumption with suspected alcoholic ketoacidosis, renal failure, shock, and recent administration of mannitol. Only 9 patients with osmolal gap greater than 50 and no patients with osmolal gap greater than 100 were found to be negative for toxic alcohols.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Our study concurs with other investigations that show that osmolal gap can be a useful diagnostic test in conjunction with clinical history and physical examination.</p

Are all ‘research fields’ equal? Rethinking practice for the use of data from crowd-sourcing market places
New technologies like large-scale social media sides (e.g., Facebook and Twitter) and crowdsourcing services (e.g., Amazon Mechanical Turk, Crowdflower, Clickworker) impact social science research and provide many new and interesting avenues for research. The use of these new technologies for research has not been without challenges and a recently published psychological study on Facebook led to a widespread discussion on the ethics of conducting large-scale experiments online. Surprisingly little has been said about the ethics of conducting research using commercial crowdsourcing market places. In this paper, I want to focus on the question of which ethical questions are raised by data collection with crowdsourcing tools. I briefly draw on implications of internet research more generally and then focus on the specific challenges that research with crowdsourcing tools faces. I identify fair-pay and related issues of respect for autonomy as well as problems with power dynamics between researcher and participant, which has implications for ‘withdrawal-withoutprejudice’, as the major ethical challenges with crowdsourced data. Further, I will to draw attention on how we can develop a ‘best practice’ for researchers using crowdsourcing tools
Canalization of Gene Expression and Domain Shifts in the Drosophila Blastoderm by Dynamical Attractors
The variation in the expression patterns of the gap genes in the blastoderm of
the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster reduces over time as a
result of cross regulation between these genes, a fact that we have demonstrated
in an accompanying article in PLoS Biology (see Manu et al.,
doi:10.1371/journal.pbio.1000049). This biologically essential process is an
example of the phenomenon known as canalization. It has been suggested that the
developmental trajectory of a wild-type organism is inherently stable, and that
canalization is a manifestation of this property. Although the role of gap genes
in the canalization process was established by correctly predicting the response
of the system to particular perturbations, the stability of the developmental
trajectory remains to be investigated. For many years, it has been speculated
that stability against perturbations during development can be described by
dynamical systems having attracting sets that drive reductions of volume in
phase space. In this paper, we show that both the reduction in variability of
gap gene expression as well as shifts in the position of posterior gap gene
domains are the result of the actions of attractors in the gap gene dynamical
system. Two biologically distinct dynamical regions exist in the early embryo,
separated by a bifurcation at 53% egg length. In the anterior region,
reduction in variation occurs because of stability induced by point attractors,
while in the posterior, the stability of the developmental trajectory arises
from a one-dimensional attracting manifold. This manifold also controls a
previously characterized anterior shift of posterior region gap domains. Our
analysis shows that the complex phenomena of canalization and pattern formation
in the Drosophila blastoderm can be understood in terms of the
qualitative features of the dynamical system. The result confirms the idea that
attractors are important for developmental stability and shows a richer variety
of dynamical attractors in developmental systems than has been previously
recognized
