Impaired biotin status in anticonvulsant therapy
In 264 epileptics undergoing long-term therapy with anticonvulsants, significantly reduced plasma biotin levels were found compared with a normal control group: 74% of the epileptics had biotin levels for those treated with sodium valproate were higher than for those treated with phenytion, primidone, or carbamazepine. The observed reduction in biotin levels might be a factor influencing the efficacy of these three antionvulsants
An Inspiration-triggered Delivery System for Oxygen Therapy via a Nasal Cannula
Therapy for severe chronic lung disease currently includes the administration of supplemental oxygen to prevent breathlessness and tissue hypoxia. Although effective, this therapy is unnecessarily costly, because oxygen is administered to the patient during expiration as well as inspiration. To eliminate this inefficiency, a delivery system that senses the inspiratory effort and delivers oxygen to the patient only during inspiration was developed. The 11 5 8-cm flow control unit attaches easily to a portable oxygen supply. The components of the system have an expected life of five years, and the 9-Volt battery provides power for about one month of use. Manual controls permit accommodation to the respiratory pattern of the patient. Preliminary evaluation of the system showed that its effectiveness in producing tissue oxygenation is similar to that of continuous oxygen systems. The system has potential applications in ambulatory oxygen therapy and in other clinical settings to improve the cost/benefit ratio of oxygen treatment
Interactive agent generated architecture
Thesis (M.S.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Architecture, 1996.Includes bibliographical references (p. 54-55).The thesis explores architectural form generation through two behavior based artificial intelligence approaches: the communication of agents in an unpredictable simulation system, and the codification of information within an evolutionary process. Both concepts stem from the evaluation of potentially definable mental constructions involving the process of translation and generation through base-level procedural methods. The experiments look towards the implementation of alternative computational processes regarding knowledge encapsulation, process recording, simulation environments, agent communication and interpretation from bottom up design approaches. The experiment explores alternative approaches to design theory within the discipline of architectural computation.by Jeffrey Charles Stanley Krause.M.S

Morphological and Chemical Properties of Plastic Residues in Composts
The relative quantity of plastic film residues and other man-made materials in composts prepared from municipal solid wastes (MSW), biosolids, yard wastes, and pine bark was evaluated utilizing light and scanning electron microscopy equipped with energy dispersive X-ray analyzer. MSW composts screened through a 4 mm screen contained significant but highly variable quantities of plastic film residues and other man-made materials that escaped detection with the unaided eye. The other composts were free of such particles. We conclude that the database for evaluation of man-made materials in MSW composts is inadequate and must be developed further

Nonsupersymmetric brane vacua in stabilized compactifications
We derive the equations for the nonsupersymmetric vacua of D3-branes in the
presence of nonperturbative moduli stabilization in type IIB flux
compactifications, and solve and analyze them in the case of two particular
7-brane embeddings at the bottom of the warped deformed conifold. In the limit
of large volume and long throat, we obtain vacua by imposing a constraint on
the 7-brane embedding. These vacua fill out continuous spaces of higher
dimension than the corresponding supersymmetric vacua, and have negative
effective cosmological constant. Perturbative stability of these vacua is
possible but not generic. Finally, we argue that anti-D3-branes at the tip of
the conifold share the same vacua as D3-branes.Comment: 17 pages, 1 figure, LaTeX. v2: references added, typo fixed. v3:
