This paper presents an opportunity for the uncertainty that has plagued the novel's criticism to appear as absences in the body of historical knowledge, particularly regarding the notion of life after death. Taking appearance (eg. proof of existence), as opposed to disappearance, as a universally accepted value allows this analysis to interrogate the novel's logic in relation to a variety of conventional systems whose very existence depends on the reproduction of their systems. The ineffectuality of Foucauldian disciplinary institutions in the novel establishes the threat of nonexistence. A significant relationship to Dante's Inferno is rendered, lending the appearance of language an 'enchanted' value through allusions to Dante's intentional invocation of Augustinian corporeal vision. The novel's metalanguage appears enchanted by the body of historical knowledge, particularly as the product of capitalism, discipline and Judeo-Christianity, and programmed by literary precursors William S. Burroughs, Gertrude Stein and Ernest Hemingway. A subsurface geologic study of petroleum possibilities in the Pennsylvanian rocks of Concho County, Texas

During early Pennsylvanian time the area now occupied by Concho County was a portion of the Texas peninsula, a broad, low arch with a karst topography developing on its exposed Ellenburger surface. A mid-Pennsylvanian marine transgression inundated the arch and it became an area of clear, shallow water deposition favorable to limestone development. Local sedimentation during Strawn time was largely controlled by its position relative to the Llano uplift and surrounding basins. A variety of subsurface maps were constructed for this study essentially utilizing electric log data. The results indicate that limestones of the Strawn platform facies rapidly change in character and reefing appears to be associated with local pre-Strawn orogenic features. Three main parallel northeast-southwest trends apparently prevail in the western portion of the mapped area. The eastern-most trend is a prolific producer, but scattered drilling has failed to locate further potential. Accumulation is generally controlled by the absence of porosity on the updip side of fields where the limestones reef up, and where sandstones clean up over and wedge out against structural highs. The greatest deterrent to success in the exploration effort is the subtlety of the trap and lack of well control. If more petroleum accumulations are to be discovered in the area it will, in all probability, be due to the consideration of prevailing subsurface stratigraphic conditions --Abstract, page [i]

Changing Patterns of Ownership Rights in the People\u27s Republic of China: A Legal and Economic Analysis in the Context of Economic Reforms and Social Conditions

This Article analyzes the legal and economic effects of privatization and the changing patterns of ownership rights in the People\u27s Republic of China. After an overview of Chinese concepts of property rights, the authors discuss the history of China\u27s post-liberation nationalization process and the movement back toward privatization and decentralization. Privatization has led Chinese law toward the recognition of private rights and duties in property law matters. The authors examine China\u27s basis for altering ownership rights and moving in the direction of a market-oriented economy. The Constitution of the People\u27s Republic of China and Chinese statutes contain specific language delineating domestic ownership rights and protection of foreign investment in China. Despite China\u27s expanding constitutional and statutory protection of private property ownership rights, the authors state that the Chinese legal system still lacks international and domestic credibility. The authors evaluate the socioeconomic impact of the rapid emergence of private ownership in China. For the average Chinese citizen, the authors believe the expansion of property rights and freedom of choice has brought forth insecurity, uncertainty, unfamiliar financial burdens, inflation, a relative abundance of consumer goods, and broad questions concerning the future of Chinese socialism, socialist ideals, and the usefulness of supporting collective action in Chinese society. The authors compare similar privatization practices in Chile and the Soviet Union to contrast these states\u27 economic growth rates and experiences with those in China. The authors also assess the results of China\u27s experiment with ownership rights, using comparative lessons from Chile and the Soviet Union as the basis for predicting the outcome of China\u27s effort at transformation. The authors conclude that China will be compelled, perhaps through the threat of social unrest caused by growing income inequality and loss of social welfare benefits, to move more slowly towards privatization and freer markets

An exploration of the role and contribution of entrepreneurship centres in UK higher education institutions

This study evaluates current and future roles of UK entrepreneurship centres (ECs) within Higher Education institutions. Literature suggests current activity in entrepreneurship education is strongly associated with the contribution of ECs. However, ECs experience resource limitations and high stakeholder's expectations, leading to a proliferation of aims, roles and identity issues. The study evaluates five UK EC using evidence from a range of stakeholders within each centre. The study considers the strategic direction of ECs, their aim and roles, resourcing and the leadership role they adopt. The study assesses the role ECs are fulfilling in the promotion of entrepreneurship and the resource constraints limiting future development. The need for EC identity and community contribution are identified as a determinant of success. This study offers novel insight into factors influencing EC behaviour and future strategy, which will be of value for UK HEI and Entrepreneurship educators

Re-examining LGBT Resources on College Counseling Center Websites: An Over-time and Cross-country Analysis

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) students continue to perceive a hostile climate on college campuses. For students facing these challenges, the university college counseling center website (CCW) may serve as a critical resource. This study provides an updated content analysis of the prevalence of LGBT communication on CCWs. Results showed that there remains a lack of LGBT-specific information about services provided on US CCWs. Furthermore, over-time analyses of 2008 and 2013 data showed that there have been no significant increases in any LGBT communication, and CCWs from religious schools continue to provide significantly less LGBT-related communication than nonreligious institutions. Separate analyses of UK CCWs showed that these websites were more likely than US CCWs to make any mention of LGBT issues but less likely to note group counseling services, links to LGBT-specific pamphlets, and educational outreach services offered. Overall, given attractive features of online health information, as well as the extent that students value CCWs, institutions must pursue stronger efforts to promote LGBT-related web counseling information. Entrepreneurial leadership: An experimental approach investigating the influence of eye contact on motivation

Small, new firms lack the resources of most larger, established firms, which makes effectively motivating employees challenging. Charismatic leadership is effective in increasing the performance of both groups and entire organizations. Specifically, the impact of charismatic leadership practices on followers stems from nonverbal communication and construed immediacy. The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of an entrepreneurial leader’s eye contact and smiling on followers’ objective motivation in an experimental leadership situation. A sample of 129 young adults was tested in a 2×2 (nonverbal tactics: high eye contact/low eye contact × high smile/low smile) experimental design. Motivation was measured by objective performance in a motoric reaction time task. The conditions were operationalized by manipulating gaze behavior and facial expressions of the leader in a staged instructional video, showing a start-up entrepreneur attempting to enhance the performance of his employees as part of a competitive comparison. Regardless of whether the leader smiled or not, participants showed faster responses and therefore performed more effectively when the leader maintained high eye contact.These findings support the hypothesis that increased eye contact is a strong nonverbal signal, which in the immediate context of leader-follower interactions, stimulates an increase in performance. In fact, eye contact could induce an increased level of motivational arousal in followers, resulting in improved confidence and self-reference when taking instructions. This study advances the existing research on learnable skills that can be used to appear more charismatic and thus potentially increasing follower performance by adopting simple nonverbal rules in communication behavior.
