    Multistatic SAR Imaging: First Results of a Four Phase Center Experiment with TerraSAR-X and TanDEM-X

    Multichannel synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imaging offers the possibility to overcome the pulse repetition frequency (PRF) constraints inherent to single-channel SAR systems. The multichannel approach enables the acquisition of wide swathes with high azimuth resolution. Using a constellation or swarm of small satellites, a cost efficient, faulttolerant system can be envisaged. This paper describes the first results of a multistatic four phase center experiment conducted with TerraSAR-X and TanDEM-X. The experiment is intended to increase the know-how and demonstrate the capabilities for the design of future SAR systems. Key challenges are addressed, the experimental acquisition is described and an evaluation approach is presented. Finally, first results focusing on the azimuth ambiguity performance are shown

    Multistatic SAR Imaging: Comparison of Simulation Results and Experimental Data

    Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) systems in a multistatic configuration are a promising candidate for future Earth observation and reconnaissance radar systems. They overcome the sampling constraints inherent to single-channel SAR systems. Thus, a multistatic SAR system enables the acquisition of high-resolution images while maintaining wide-swath coverage. Employing several small satellites instead of a single large one, a cost-efficient system with graceful degradation characteristics can be envisaged. Additionally, such a constellation or swarm of sensors offers interferometric and tomographic capabilities, which a single-satellite system is not able to provide. This paper shows results of multistatic experiments obtained with TerraSAR-X and TanDEM-X and compares these results with theoretical simulations. The key parameters analyzed are the Doppler spectrum and the azimuth ambiguity suppression

    Has gambling changed after major amendments of gambling regulations in Germany? A propensity score analysis

    Aims: This study examined changes in general population gambling in the light of two major amendments of the German gambling regulation, the Fifth Amendment of the German Gambling Ordinance (AGO) for commercial amusement machines with prizes (AWP) and the State Treaty on Gambling (STG) for gambling activities subject to the state monopoly. Methods: Applying cross-sectional data from the 2006 and 2009 Epidemiological Survey of Substance Abuse (ESA), propensity-score-matched samples of 7,970 subjects and 3,624 12-month gamblers aged 18–64 years were used for analyses. Logistic regression was employed to examine changes in gambling controlling for possible confounding variables. Results: Overall participation in state gambling activities, participation in lotto as well as TV lottery decreased and gambling on Internet card games increased. No changes were found for any other gambling activity, 12-month prevalence of any gambling and pathological gambling. While weekly gambling declined, overall multiple gambling increased. Effects were similar in the total sample and among current gamblers. Conclusions: Prohibiting specific gambling activities, e.g., Internet gambling, seem to be insufficient approaches to change gambling behavior. Supply reduction might need to be enhanced by changes in game characteristics and implementation of early intervention measures. However, long-term consequences are uncertain and further monitoring is needed

    Gamblers seeking treatment: Who does and who doesn't?

    Abstract Background and aims As only a minority of pathological gamblers (PGr) presents for treatment, further knowledge about help-seeking behavior is required in order to enhance treatment utilization. The present study investigated factors associated with treatment participation in gamblers in Germany. As subclinical pathological gamblers (SPGr, fulfilling one to four DSM-IV-criteria) are target of early intervention due to high risk of transition to pathological gambling, they were subject of special interest. Methods The study analyzed data from a general population survey (n = 234, SPGr: n = 198, PGr: n = 36) and a treatment study (n = 329, SPGr: n = 22, PGr: n = 307). A two-step weighting procedure was applied to ensure comparability of samples. Investigated factors included socio-demographic variables, gambling behavior, symptoms of pathological gambling and substance use. Results In PGr, regular employment and non-German nationality were positively associated with being in treatment while gambling on the Internet and gaming machines and fulfilling more DSM-IV-criteria lowered the odds. In SPGr, treatment attendance was negatively associated with married status and alcohol consumption and positively associated with older age, higher stakes, more fulfilled DSM-IV criteria and regular smoking. Conclusions In accordance to expectations more severe gambling problems and higher problem awareness and/or external pressure might facilitate treatment entry. There are groups with lower chances of being in treatment: women, ethnic minorities, and SPGr. We propose target group specific offers, use of Internet-based methods as possible adaptions and/or extensions of treatment offers that could enhance treatment attendance

We defined a cold day using the World Meteorological definition of an ice day, which is a day with a maximum temperature below 0°C. Background: Recently, we have shown that heat waves increase the risk for IG and IBD flares. Study: We retrospectively collected data from 738 IBD and 786 IG patients admitted to the University Hospital of Zurich between 2001 and 2005 and from 506 patients with other noninfectious chronic intestinal inflammations as controls. Climate data were received by the Swiss Federal Office for Meteorology and Climatology. Results: There was no evidence for an increased risk of IBD flares (relative risk, RR = 0.99, 95% confidence interval, CI: 0.72-1.33, = 0.94) or IG flares (RR = 1.16, 95% CI: 087-1.52, = 0.30) on very cold days. This negative finding was confirmed in alternative formulations with lagged or cumulative (possibly lagged) effects. Conclusion: In this retrospective controlled observational study, no evidence for an increase in hospital admissions due to flares of IBD and IG during cold days was observed. This may be attributed to not relevantly altered bacterial growth conditions during cold days compared to heat waves

    Antecedents of successful internationalization in family and non-family firms: How knowledge resources and collaboration intensity shape international performance

    The internationalization of family firms has increasingly been recognized as an important field of inquiry for international business scholars. And yet, there is a noticeable paucity of original research on key issues, including the differences in antecedents of international performance between family and non-family firms. By drawing on the revised Uppsala model of internationalization from 2009 and the concept of socio-emotional wealth, the present study applies Fuzzy Set Qualitative Comparative Analysis as a methodological approach to identify different configurational sets of antecedents for international performance. Our results suggest that differences in causal configurations of certain antecedents (education, international market knowledge, international business experience, and collaboration intensity) between family and non-family firms exist. Furthermore, we found that the specific characteristics of family firms explain these differences

    Experimental Demonstration of Nadir Echo Removal in SAR Using Waveform Diversity and Dual-Focus Postprocessing

    Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) provides high-resolution images for remote sensing applications regardless of sunlight and weather conditions. The pulsed operation of SAR may lead to an occurrence of nadir echoes in SAR images that significantly affect the image quality in case the pulse repetition frequency (PRF) is not properly constrained within the SAR system design. As an alternative, pulse-to-pulse variation of the transmitted waveform and dual-focus postprocessing can be exploited to remove the nadir echo and alleviate the PRF constraints (also in ScanSAR operation). This work provides a demonstration of the latter concept through an experimental acquisition of the TerraSAR-X satellite. The experiment is designed by selecting the scene and the acquisition parameters in order to have the nadir echo appearing in the SAR image. The waveform variation is achieved by alternating up- and down-chirps on transmit. The analysis of the results shows the effectiveness of dual-focus postprocessing for nadir echo suppression
