A general purpose HyperTransport-based Application Accelerator Framework

HyperTransport provides a flexible, low latency and high bandwidth interconnection between processors and also between processors and peripheral omponents. Therefore, the interconnection is no longer a performance bottleneck when integrating application specific accelerators in modern computing systems. Current FPGAs providing huge computational power and permit the acceleration of compute-intensive kernels. We therefore present a general purpose architecture based on HyperTransport and modern FPGAs to accelerate time-consuming computations. Further, we present a prototypical implementation of our architecture. Here we used an AMD Opteron-based system with the HTX Board [6] to demonstrate that common applications can benefit from available hardware accelerators. A cryptographic example showed that the encryption of files, larger then 50 kByte, can be successfully accelerated

Locally compact abelian p-groups revisited

Even though the structure of locally compact abelian groups is generally considered to be rather thoroughly known through a wealth of publications, one keeps encountering corners that are not elucidated in up-to-date literature. In a study of a particular class of metabelian locally compact groups (see [HHR17]) we encountered some issues about noncompact locally compact abelian groups which do not appear to be discussed in the literature even though some of them were anticipated in Braconnier's article on his local product [Bra48]. Here we treat some of them, notably some aspects of totally disconnected torsion-free locally compact abelian groups which one might consider unexpected if not pathological. However, firstly we deal with some points concerning noncompact locally compact abelian torsion groups. For compact abelian groups we often refer to the monograph [HM13]. It will be convenient to use additive notation for abelian groups

Exploiting the HTX-Board as a Coprocessor for Exact Arithmetics

Certain numerical computations benefit from dedicated computation units, e.g. providing increased computation accuracy. Exploiting current interconnection technologies and advances in reconfigurable logic, restrictions and drawbacks of past approaches towards application-specific units can be overcome. This paper presents our implementation of an FPGA-based hardware unit for exact arithmetics. The unit is tightly integrated into the host system using state-of-the-art HyperTransport technology. An according runtime system provides OS-level support including dynamic function resolution. The approach demonstrates suitability and applicability of the chosen technologies, setting the pace towards broadly acceptable use of reconfigurable coprocessor technology for application-specific computing

The Quantitative Distribution Of Gold In Skin During Chrysotherapy

Gold concentrations in epidermis, dermis, and whole skin were measured by neutron activation analysis after formation of suction bullae in 8 patients who had received protracted chrysotherapy. Epidermis contained 3% (median) of the gold content of whole skin. A direct correlation between cumulative gold dose and skin gold level was noted. These findings suggest that apparent gold concentrations in skin are influenced by the depth of the biopsy, the keratinous tissues have little affinity for gold, and that the gold storage capability of skin is not saturated by large cumulative doses of gold. The beneficial effect of gold in pemphigus may not be mediated at the site of blister formation

Fitness costs of resistance to \u3ci\u3eBacillus thuringiensis\u3c/i\u3e in the Indianmeal moth, \u3ci\u3ePlodia interpunctella\u3c/i\u3e

Genetic changes in insects that result in insecticide resistance can also affect their fitness. Here, we report measurements of development time and survival of the Indianmeal moth, Plodia interpunctella (Hübner), to compare the relative fitness of Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt)-susceptible and -resistant colonies. Measurements of larval development time and survival indicated that a fitness cost was associated with resistance to Bt in some Bt-resistant colonies but not others. Comparisons of geographically different populations revealed inherent differences in development time and survival. In most cases, Bt-resistant moths suffered no disadvantage when feeding on a Bt-treated diet. In many cases, the development of Bt-resistant moths on Bt-treated diet was slower than the unselected moths on untreated diet, but it is unclear whether these differences would affect the successful mating of susceptible and resistant moths

Damit sind Veränderungen im Arbeitsverständnis und den Arbeitsbeziehungen verbunden, die von erheblicher arbeitsmarkt-, beschäftigungs- und gesellschaftspolitischer Bedeutung sind. Dabei handelt es sich um innovative Gestaltungsansätze, die über den Dritten Sektor hinaus auch für andere Wirtschafts- und Unternehmensformen beispielhaft sein können
