Non-verbal Communication and Communicative Understanding of the Liturgy and Liturgical Signs in the Light of Charles Sanders Peirceās Theory of Signs
Ā The human person as a ātriadicā creature needs ritual at all three levels āĀ physical, psychological and spiritual ā of his or her being. At the physical level, ritual serves as support for a healthier life-style. At the psychological level, ritual regulates intrapersonal and interpersonal communicatio. At the level of spirituality, it places him or her in the context of transcendence and ārecent aimsā and both individually and communally gives meaning to human life. Therefore, the author of the paper first This paper starts by considering the human person as a ritual creature that already with his body requires certain ritual acts and various forms of nonverbal communication. In the central part of the discussion, the author focuses on Peirceās theory of signs and presents it as one model suitable for understanding and explaining liturgical signs. This is an interesting understanding of religious signs, which encourages an interpretative relationship between the human person and the liturgy, its signs and contents.Ā The human person as a ātriadicā creature needs ritual at all three levels āĀ physical, psychological and spiritual ā of his or her being. Understanding Some Parts of the Mass in the Light of Pierceās Theory of Signs
Peirce\u27s semiotics includes interpersonal messages in the broadest sense of the word: body language, movements, gestures, signs, language, etc., in short, everything in the liturgy that has a fundamental significance for accessing the "sanctuary of liturgy" or understanding the liturgy. Peirce tried to encompass all the phenomena with three phenomenological categories: Firstness, Secondness and Thirdness, which also in the area of liturgy provides a deeper understanding of ceremonial parts. That is why the author divided his discussion into two parts: the first part outlines the theory of Charles Sanders Peirce with examples that only indicate the way of applying the theory to the understanding of the liturgy; in the second part, he starts from the liturgy and tries to interpret some parts of the Mass with the help of Peirce\u27s triadic division of sign in view of three basic categories of conclusion that Peirce uses to define a person\u27s perception of meaning as such
Man Is a Ritual-Dialogical Being and a Being of Celebration
The author of the discussion (Man is a ritual-dialogical being and a being of celebration) focuses on the fact that man is a ritual being, independent of time and space, culture or religion, and presents how this homo liturgicus has been affirmed by ritual dialogue since antiquity, communicating through it with close ones and with the transcendent (God). The discussion shows how despite modern-day denials and the search for alternative rituals man remains a ritual being with a touch of transcendence, which has been and remains the āred threadā of human ritual engagement throughout history. This is supported by the fact that social rituals and festive practices have always been and are directly related to the worldview of a specific community or society and its perception of its own identity, since rituals and ritual dialogue with them have been an essential part of public and social life from prehistory to the present. At the end of the discussion, the author derives seven characteristics of ritual dialogue from the biblical passage about āthe two disciples on the road to Emmausā (Luke 24:13-35), which confirm that humans are ritual-dialogical beings and beings of celebration
Understanding of Liturgy under the Aspect of Wittgenstein\u27s Philosophy of Language
In the light of new evangelization a question is raised up: How to consider the liturgy and its role in Christian life? The author is seeking for the answer on the basis of two principles: the first is the dialogue with the contemporary thought; the second is the reflection about the essence and the role of liturgy in the life of believers on the bases of new methods. The paper deals with the problems of liturgy in the light of Wittgensteinās philosophy of language; the author presents Wittgensteinās considerations on faith, at the same time he uses his approach to language and his concepts as method for the analysis of liturgy and its language. As such the paper is the original contribution to the dialogue with modern culture, at the same time it means new and effective questioning about the essence and quality of liturgy
Research and pedagogical work of liturgist Karel JaÅ”
Since the life path of Karel JaÅ” (1901ā1999) and his liturgical work were discussed in two major discussions, the author put focus in this debate only on the research and pedagogical work of Karel JaÅ” in the time of his catechist service in the parishes and employment as lecturer of liturgy at the Maribor Unit of the Faculty of Theology. In the discussion professor JaÅ” is presented as a researcher in the liturgical movement in the 1930s as well as a remarkable expert on postconciliar worship. The main theme of his interest and research was active collaboration in worship. Therefore his research work focused primarily on the pastoral benefit. He also used his research findings and insights in his lecturing at the Faculty of Theology. Although he did not study liturgy at any scientific institution, his knowledge of liturgy was no less scientific and professional as he was subscribed to almost all of the liturgical magazines of that time, he regularly received all of the most important works on liturgy, translated many of them and used them in his pastoral work and his lectures. He tried to pass his enthusiasm for research and for a more active participation in worship onto his students, but he did not always succeed. Nevertheless he performed his mission as lecturer with a great deal of responsibility and dedication. It can be said that Karel JaÅ” is one of the greatest pioneers of the liturgical movement in the Church of Slovenia, a great liturg full of enthusiasm, with a great deal of responsibility as a professional lecturer of liturgy at the Faculty of Theolog
