Beta asymmetry parameter in the decay of 114In

The beta asymmetry parameter A for the pure Gamow-Teller decay of 114In is reported. The low temperature nuclear orientation method was combined with a GEANT4 based simulation code allowing for the first time to address in detail the effects of scattering and of the magnetic field. The result, A = -0.994 +/- 0.010stat +/- 0.010syst, constitutes the most accurate value for the asymmetry parameter of a nuclear beta transition to date. The value is in agreement with the Standard Model prediction of A = -1 and provides new limits on tensor type charged weak currents.Comment: 11 pages, 2 figures; additional information was added on systematic effects, the magnetic field map and the calculation of the Qcos(theta) value

Suspension of Mitotic Activity in Dentate Gyrus of the Hibernating Ground Squirrel

Neurogenesis occurs in the adult mammalian hippocampus, a region of the brain important for learning and memory. Hibernation in Siberian ground squirrels provides a natural model to study mitosis as the rapid fall in body temperature in 24 h (from 35-36°C to +4–6°C) permits accumulation of mitotic cells at different stages of the cell cycle. Histological methods used to study adult neurogenesis are limited largely to fixed tissue, and the mitotic state elucidated depends on the specific phase of mitosis at the time of day. However, using an immunohistochemical study of doublecortin (DCX) and BrdU-labelled neurons, we demonstrate that the dentate gyrus of the ground squirrel hippocampus contains a population of immature cells which appear to possess mitotic activity. Our data suggest that doublecortin-labelled immature cells exist in a mitotic state and may represent a renewable pool for generation of new neurons within the dentate gyrus

Air transportation for ensuring coherence territories of the Russian Federation

    Get PDF
The problem of definition of the optimum and balanced development of the air transportation for ensuring coherence of the territory of the Russian Federation (RF) is considered in the article. The analysis of domestic air-transport infrastructure and its comparison with foreign analogs is carried out. A transportation plays a crucial role in ensuring connectivity, which in turn has a significant impact on the economic development of the regions. New ambitious projects can be stopped due to absence of moving labor resources, energy capacity, materials, products, etc. from one point to another. Taking into account the peculiarity of the Russian Federation as a state with the largest territories in size and length the problem of connectivity is key for many business projects. Particular attention should be paid to ensuring the connectivity of the territories in the development of natural resources of Siberia, the Far East and the Arctic zone. When choosing a mode of transport, it is necessary to analyze the optimal costs in the construction of transport infrastructure and maintaining its serviceability. Given the large length of routes connecting the target regions and the European part of Russia, aviation is considered one of the optimal modes of transport. The article analyzes the domestic air transport infrastructure and compares it with foreign analogues. In addition to the traditional methods of air transportation the innovative types of air transport is considered. Conclusions about need of the state support of development both the modern aircraft equipment, and land transport infrastructure are drawn. The introduction of innovations in transport connectivity can significantly reduce the cost of disigning an aviation infrastructure and fundamentally reduce the duration of such projects. However, without both legislative and financial support from the state such innovative projects are not implemented. More active use of new types of the air transportation is offered

Precision measurements of the 60^{60}Co β\beta-asymmetry parameter in search for tensor currents in weak interactions

The β\beta-asymmetry parameter A~\widetilde{A} for the Gamow-Teller decay of 60^{60}Co was measured by polarizing the radioactive nuclei with the brute force low-temperature nuclear-orientation method. The 60^{60}Co activity was cooled down to milliKelvin temperatures in a 3^3He-4^4He dilution refrigerator in an external 13 T magnetic field. The β\beta particles were observed by a 500 μm{\mu}m thick Si PIN diode operating at a temperature of about 10 K in a magnetic field of 0.6 T. Extensive GEANT4 Monte-Carlo simulations were performed to gain control over the systematic effects. Our result, A~=1.014(12)stat(16)syst\widetilde{A} = -1.014(12)_{stat}(16)_{syst}, is in agreement with the Standard-Model value of 0.987(9)-0.987(9), which includes recoil-order corrections that were addressed for the first time for this isotope. Further, it enables limits to be placed on possible tensor-type charged weak currents as well as other physics beyond the Standard Model

The half-life of 221^{221}Fr in Si and Au at 4K and at mK temperatures

The half-life of the α\alpha decaying nucleus 221^{221}Fr was determined in different environments, i.e. embedded in Si at 4 K, and embedded in Au at 4 K and about 20 mK. No differences in half-life for these different conditions were observed within 0.1%. Furthermore, we quote a new value for the absolute half-life of 221^{221}Fr of t1/2_{1/2} = 286.1(10) s, which is of comparable precision to the most precise value available in literature

The WITCH experiment: completion of a set-up to investigate the structure of weak interactions with a Penning trap

The WITCH experiment aims to study a possible admixture of a scalar or tensor type interaction in beta decay by determining the beta-neutrino angular correlation from the shape of the recoil energy spectrum. The installation period was completed and intensive commissioning of the set-up was performed already. The lay-out of the WITCH set-up and results of commissioning tests performed until now are described here, showing that the full set-up up to the spectrometer is now operational, although several efficiencies are still to be improved. Due to its feature of being able to measure the energy spectrum for recoil ions, the WITCH experiment also opens possibilities for other observables.Comment: 31 pages, 18 figures. The Extracellular Vesicle Citrullinome and Signature in a Piglet Model of Neonatal Seizures

    Get PDF
Neonatal seizures are commonly associated with acute perinatal brain injury, while understanding regarding the downstream molecular pathways related to seizures remains unclear. Furthermore, effective treatment and reliable biomarkers are still lacking. Post-translational modifications can contribute to changes in protein function, and post-translational citrullination, which is caused by modification of arginine to citrulline via the calcium-mediated activation of the pep-tidylarginine deiminase (PAD) enzyme family, is being increasingly linked to neurological injury. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are lipid-bilayer structures released from cells; they can be isolated from most body fluids and act as potential liquid biomarkers for disease conditions and response to treatment. As EVs carry a range of genetic and protein cargo that can be characteristic of pathological processes, the current study assessed modified citrullinated protein cargo in EVs isolated from plasma and CSF in a piglet neonatal seizure model, also following phenobarbitone treatment. Our findings provide novel insights into roles for PAD-mediated changes on EV signatures in neonatal seizures and highlight the potential of plasma-and CSF-EVs to monitor responses to treatment

    Progress at the WITCH experiment

    Get PDF
The WITCH-experiment will measure the energy spectrum of the recoiling daughter ions in β\beta-decay to search for non-standard scalar and tensor type interaction. To facilitate this a Penning trap is used to store the radioactive ions. Thus the recoil ions can leave the source without any energy loss and their energy can be probed by the subsequent retardation spectrometer. The experiment is being set up at present at ISOLDE/CERN. The principle and the status of the WITCH-experiment will be presented. (12 refs)
