Werkt XSA bij exploitatieniveaus die verschillen in verschillende deelgebiede? Product A9 van het F-project

Werkpakket F1 van het F-project richt zich op de verbetering van de toestandsbeoordeling. Dit rapport (A9) onderzoekt de vraag of het traditioneel door ICES gehanteerde model voor de toestandsbeoordeling (Extended Survivor Analysis – XSA) de bestandsontwikkeling juist kan schatten indien het visbestand in verschillende deelgebieden van het totale verspreidingsgebied op verschillende niveaus bevist wordt. Men kan hierbij denken aan een afname van de visserij-intensiteit in een deel van het verspreidingsgebied, zoals deze de laatste jaren afgenomen lijkt te zijn voor schol in de noordelijke Noordzee, of aan gebiedssluitingen zoals de sluiting van de scholbox. Hiertoe is een simpel model geconstrueerd dat de populatiedynamica simuleert bij verschillende exploitatieniveaus die in twee deelgebieden onafhankelijk van elkaar gevarieerd kunnen worden. Met de gesimuleerde vangstgegevens wordt dan een toestandsbeoordeling uitgevoerd, om te onderzoeken hoe goed XSA het (bekende) populatieverloop kan terugschatten. XSA wordt gedraaid met gegevens die een exacte en correcte afspiegeling zijn van de gesimuleerde populatie. Dit betekent dat elke afwijking veroorzaakt wordt door de modelaannames of modelkeuze

Linking catchability and fisher behaviour under effort management

Catchability is crucial for the economic performance of fisheries and their management. However, in many bio-economic simulation models it is assumed to be either constant or it is largely ignored, despite the fact that it is known to vary due to technical, environmental and behavioral factors. Such variation can cause the relationship between effort and fishing mortality to be nonlinear. This paper provides evidence for the possibility of nonlinear optimizing behavior from the Dutch beam trawl fishery, provides a methodology for estimating the curvature of the resulting relation, and a simple way of implementing these processes within a bio-economic model. Gender and early career status: variables of participation at an international marine science conference

Conference participation is an important part of academic practice and contributes to building scientific careers. Investigating demographic differences in conference participation may reveal factors contributing to the continued under-representation of women in marine and ocean science. To explore the gender and career stage dimensions of participation in an international marine science conference, preferences of presentation type (oral/poster) as well as acceptance and rejection decisions were investigated using 5-years of data (2015–2019) from an International Marine Science Conference. It was found that early career scientists were more likely to be women, while established scientists were more likely to be men. Although overall, gender did not show a significant effect on the decisions to “downgrade” requests for oral presentations to poster presentations, early career scientists were significantly more likely to be downgraded than established scientists. Given that more women were often early career scientists, more women than men had their presentations downgraded. Other indicators and evidence from conference prize-giving and recognition awards point to a gender gap remaining at senior levels, highlighting the need for further actions as well as monitoring and researching conference participation from a gender perspective.publishedVersio

Analysis of the ICES short-term forecasts of North Sea plaice and sole: dealing with the 'current year' assumption

The F1 working package of the F-project is concerned with the improvement of stock assessment of plaice and sole. The full range of problems of uncertainty and bias in the stock assessment will be analysed through a series of small investigations of single problems. The present report deals with the “current year” assumption in the short-term forecast. From this study we conclude that in order to minimise the prediction error in the short-term forecast, given the uncertainty and bias in the VPA, the status quo F assumption should be preferred. We also found that the quality of the outcome of the VPA itself plays a large role in the quality of the forecast. Further study of the uncertainty and bias in the stock assessment, as planned in the F-project, is clearly necessary
