Dental students providing oral hygiene instruction and supplies to community children

poster abstractBackground: Lack of understanding of the need for oral care may be the cause of the high caries rate in inner-city children. IUSD “Kids Club” offers dental students an opportunity to provide oral hygiene instructions and supplies to children around Indianapolis. The members of “Kids Club” travel to elementary schools and after-school programs in the Indianapolis area to educate children and their families. Education is provided in ways which engage the children via interactive puppet-use and stories. The ultimate goal of “Kids Club” is to aid in oral disease prevention by promoting proper oral hygiene. Methods: In two weeks’ time, “Kids Club” members visited six pre-school classes in Indianapolis to promote proper oral hygiene, oral health care, and better understanding of oral disease. At the beginning of a session, the children were asked six questions regarding oral health care. Oral hygiene education was then performed using interactive puppet play and story-telling. After the oral hygiene demonstration, the same six questions were repeated. Results: The largest difference in correct answers prior to the lesson and after was 29% (from 71% to 100%). By comparing the responses before and after the lesson, it can be seen that “Kids Club” members are improving the oral health care knowledge of the children. Not only are these lessons positive learning experiences for the children, but they are also positive learning experiences for the “Kids Club” members. By assessing the effectiveness of the oral hygiene lesson given at previous events, members are able to perfect their teaching abilities for future oral hygiene instruction. Conclusion: By providing oral hygiene education, “Kids Club” members are helping to increase the oral health care knowledge of school-aged children and helping to prevent future disease among the children of the Indianapolis

Attenuation of hedgehog/GLI signaling by NT1721 extends survival in pancreatic cancer.

BackgroundPancreatic cancer is one of the most lethal malignancies due to frequent late diagnosis, aggressive tumor growth and metastasis formation. Continuously raising incidence rates of pancreatic cancer and a lack of significant improvement in survival rates over the past 30 years highlight the need for new therapeutic agents. Thus, new therapeutic agents and strategies are urgently needed to improve the outcome for patients with pancreatic cancer. Here, we evaluated the anti-tumor activity of a new natural product-based epidithiodiketopiperazine, NT1721, against pancreatic cancer.MethodsWe characterized the anticancer efficacy of NT1721 in multiple pancreatic cancer cell lines in vitro and in two orthotopic models. We also compared the effects of NT1721 to clinically used hedgehog inhibitors and the standard-of-care drug, gemcitabine. The effect of NT1721 on hedgehog/GLI signaling was assessed by determining the expression of GLI and GLI target genes both in vitro and in vivo.ResultsNT1721 displayed IC50 values in the submicromolar range in multiple pancreatic cancer cell lines, while largely sparing normal pancreatic epithelial cells. NT1721 attenuated hedgehog/GLI signaling through downregulation of GLI1/2 transcription factors and their downstream target genes, which reduced cell proliferation and invasion in vitro and significantly decreased tumor growth and liver metastasis in two preclinical orthotopic mouse models of pancreatic cancer. Importantly, treatment with NT1721 significantly improved survival times of mice with pancreatic cancer compared to the standard-of-care drug, gemcitabine.ConclusionsFavorable therapeutics properties, i.e. 10-fold lower IC50 values than clinically used hedgehog inhibitors (vismodegib, erismodegib), a 90% reduction in liver metastasis and significantly better survival times compared to the standard-of-care drug, gemcitabine, provide a rational for testing NT1721 in the clinic either as a single agent or possibly in combination with gemcitabine or other therapeutic agents in PDAC patients overexpressing GLI1/2. This could potentially result in promising new treatment options for patients suffering from this devastating disease

That modest chapter seems to remind the first years of creating the University of Silesia Library and its activity. For some objective reasons – fallible memory, 40 year-long lapse of time, and mainly the passing away of the people who created its beginnings – the article is rather a draft of recollections than an assessment or analysis of those years. Prof. zw. dr hab. Wanda Bobrowska-Nowak : pedagog i historyk wychowania

Prof. zw. dr hab. Wanda Bobrowska-Nowak urodziła się 24 grudnia 1925 roku w Wilnie w środowisku inteligencji pracującej. W kwietniu 1945 roku przyjechała do Łodzi jako repatriantka, gdzie po ukończeniu Kursu dla Wychowawców rozpoczęła w sierpniu tego roku pracę w placówkach opieki nad dzieckiem. Pracując zawodowo uzyskała świadectwo dojrzałości, po czym podjęła studia wyższe na Wydziale Humanistycznym Uniwersytetu Łódzkiego w zakresie pedagogiki i psychologii. Studia te ukończyła w roku akademickim 1951/52 uzyskując stopień magistra filozofii w zakresie pedagogiki. Praca magisterska z zakresu historii wychowania na temat: Szkolnictwo elementarne w Księstwie Warszawskim i Królestwie Kongresowym została napisana pod kierunkiem prof. dr. hab. Józef Syska (1890-1982) prekursor edukacji elementarnej na Śląsku

Józef Syska, syn Józefa i Katarzyny z Krzemieńców, urodził się 12 marca 1890 roku w Bobrku w ówczesnym powiecie chrzanowskim w rodzinie rzemieślniczo-rolniczej. Uczęszczał do gimnazjum w Krakowie, gdzie brał czynny udział w polskim życiu organizacyjnym. Należał do tajnej uczniowskiej organizacji socjalistycznej, która przygotowała strajk szkolny. Ukończył trzy klasy gimnazjum. W latach 1907-1911 uczęszczał do seminarium nauczycielskiego w Kętach. Odbył praktykę pedagogiczną w charakterze tymczasowego nauczyciela szkoły ludowej w Bachowicach i Polance Wielkiej w latach 1911-1913. W październiku 1913 roku w Krakowie Józef Syska złożył przed komisją egzamin i otrzymał „PATENT” na nauczyciela szkół ludowych pospolitych. Patent ten upoważniał do samodzielnego sprawowania urzędu nauczycielskiego w szkołach ludowych pospolitych z językiem wykładowym polskim. W 1914 roku wyjechał na studia pedagogiczne do Brukseli. Ukończył Międzynarodowy Wydział Pedologii w Brukseli kierowany przez dr Józefę Joteyko (...)

Bolesław Hornowski (1914-1983)

Profesor Bolesław Hornowski urodził się 6 maja 1914 roku w Studziance koło Białej Podlaskiej. Po ukończeniu w 1934 roku Państwowego Seminarium Nauczycielskiego Męskiego w Leśnej Podlaskiej uzyskał dyplom nauczyciela publicznych i prywatnych szkół powszechnych. W roku 1936 podjął pracę jako nauczyciel, najpierw jako mianowany nauczyciel tymczasowy, później jako nauczyciel etatowy. Wybuch II wojny światowej przerwał jego działalność zawodową. Hornowski uczestniczył w kampanii wrześniowej, po czym rozpoczął żołnierską tułaczkę po Europie. Walczył na Węgrzech w szeregach Polskich Sił Zbrojnych we Francji, a później w Szkocji. W 1943 roku podjął studia na Uniwersytecie w Edynburgu na kierunkach: psychologia, pedagogika i biologia. Psychologię studiował m.in., u Jamesa Drevera. 1(...
