Analytical philosophy of history in Poland : inspirations and interpretations

    Get PDF
Analytic philosophy is sometimes understood in opposition to continental tradition. In this article, I would like to show that a Lviv‑Warsaw School shared many fundamental traits with analytic orientation. In afterwar Poland, this tradition clashed with the dialectical materialism that lacks strong scientific tradition but had the full support of the communist party. This situation produced a unique scenario in which the methodology of science could strive as a mainstream area. A crucial role was attributed to the theory of history

Powrót do przyszłości Paula A. Rotha : historia i nauka jako racjonalne działanie człowieka (ponownie)

The main goal of this paper is to present a fully developed concept of Paul A. Roth’s philosophy of history to the Polish reader. Of course, it is just an introduction, but with the interview it should be a good starting point for further analysis. These seem desirable given Roth’s very ambitious programme, which in addition is based on “old facts”; that is, an analytical philosophy of history and science. The rapprochement between the two “visions” is not only a philosophical consideration, but also responds to the often-raised voices of practitioners. This introduction refers primarily to Roth’s latest book, indicating a possible interpretation. This “reading” is conducted by indicating the historical context, recalling philosophical analyses and determining the validity of the proposed solutions in order to decide how much science there is in history and vice versa

Recenzja książki: Brzechczyn Krzysztof, red. New Perspectives in Transnational History of Communism in East Central Europe. Bern: Peter Lang Verlag, 2019. 386 s."Seria wydawnicza Dia-Logos. (fragm.

Comparison of circular- and linear-stapled gastrojejunostomy in laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass : a multicenter study

Introduction : Laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (LRYGB) is a common, well-established procedure, but no consensus regarding selection of the gastrojejunostomy (GJ) technique has been reached, and standardization of this precise technique is far from being achieved. Aim : To compare circular-stapled and linear-stapled GJ in LRYGB in terms of operative time and postoperative complications. Material and methods: This retrospective case-control study compared the perioperative and postoperative outcomes of LRYGB with a circular-stapled (LRYGB-CS) versus linear-stapled (LRYGB-LS) gastrojejunostomy. All patients, operated on in two academic referral care centers for bariatric surgery, were enrolled from April 2013 to June 2016. 457 patients were included (255 and 202 respectively in the LRYGB-CS and LRYGB-LS groups). After matching the groups for age, sex, body mass index, arterial hypertension, and presence of type 2 diabetes in a 1 : 1 ratio, 99 patients were enrolled in each. Results : The total operative time was longer in the LRYGB-LS group (140 vs. 85 min, p < 0.001). The postoperative hemorrhage and wound infection rates were lower in the LRYGB-LS group (2.1% vs. 10.3%, p = 0.021, and 1.0% vs. 9.3%, p = 0.011). The readmission rates were comparable (8.2% vs. 6.1%, p = 0.593). There was no significant difference in the incidence of gastrojejunostomy leakage, stricture, port-site hernia, or marginal ulcer. Conclusions : Both anastomosis types for LRYGB are safe and have low and comparable risks of postoperative complications. After LRYGB-CS, postoperative bleeding and wound infections are slightly more frequent; however, the operative time is shorter

Minimally-invasive surgery is more and more often considered to be an advisable treatment in case of patients with mitral or triscupid valve dysfunctions, as well as those with heart tumor. The incision is reduced to minimum. As a result, the blood loss, postoperative pain and cardiorespiratory complications are also reduced. Minimally-invasive techniques are being developed dynamically all over the world, although they are not available yet in many medical centres. In this article, a case of a female patient in extremely severe condition is described. The women had been diagnosed with left atrial myxoma and underwent a minimally-invasive surgery with alternative access used for the purpose of extracorporeal circulation.Minimally-invasive surgery is more and more often considered to be an advisable treatment in case of patients with mitral or triscupid valve dysfunctions, as well as those with heart tumor.
