    On the Stress Distribution in Slotted Cylinder Springs

    A critical analysis of the scientific literature shows that, contrary to helical and other springs widely used in practice, slotted cylinder springs have been insufficiently documented to date. Currently, given the under exploited potential of their particular mechanical properties, a further investigation is much necessary in order to extend their use to as many as possible areas of technology. This is quite possible thanks to the most recent state of mechanical design research and technology. This paper is a part of a project that aims at developing specific computer software tools allowing precise analytic stress state determination. It develops a statically indeterminate approach of the problem of the stress behaviour of such springs, following which previously and three newly proposed models are compared one with another on the basis of ratios between Von Mises’ stresses. Finally, for the case of two slots per section slotted cylinder springs, it is concluded that the analytical solution of the two degrees of freedom proposed primary system is in good agreement with empirical and Computer Aid Design res-olutions. A generalization to higher number of slots per section springs is foreseen using the same methodology

    WebGIS as boundary tools between scientific geoinformation and disaster risk reduction action in volcanic areas

    As the amount of spatial data is growing, there is increased interest in developing tools to explore, visualize and interpret them, with the final aim of informing decision making efficiently. Within the European MIAVITA project, we examined this issue in the case of volcanic areas, where existing geospatial databases are particularly complex due to the number of threats to be considered, including volcanic (e.g. lava flows, ash fall) and non-volcanic hazards, such as landslides or tsunamis. We involved a group of hazard and risk analysts and managers, civil security officers, GIS analysts and system developers to design a Web-based geographical information system (WebGIS). We tested the system at the Mount Cameroon volcano, taking advantage of a complex hazard and risk geographical database. This study enabled identifying key requirements for such tools in volcanic areas, such as the need to manage user privileges differently according to their profile and the status of the volcano. This work also highlights that, in addition to the development of large geoinformation clearinghouses, there is a need for site-specific information systems focused on working procedures of users, in order to fill the last gap between data producers and users

    Wind data modeling and energy mapping of the wind potential in the city of Douala (Cameroun)

    This work helps in the implementation of wind energy projects in the city of Douala. Wind data used (speed and direction) were collected from January 1, 2020, to December 31, 2020, at a height of 10m. The use of wind speed distribution laws allowed us to obtain predictions of the available wind energy on-site at different altitudes. Then, the wind direction is established for the orientation of the wind turbines and the turbulence analysis is done to highlight the exploitable wind periods. The results show that harnessing wind energy is possible on site from 10 AM to 06 PM. The wind potential at 138 m height has an average speed of 8.15 m/s for an overall energy density of 749.78 W/m2 for roughness class 0, and an average speed of 3.7 m/s for an overall energy density of 69.118 W/m2 for roughness class 4. The wind turbines will be installed in front of the north-north-east direction between 15 and 25°. Finally, the energy mapping of the city's wind resources allows us to estimate the total energy available at a reference height

    Virulence Characteristics and Phylogenetic Background of Ciprofloxacin Resistant Escherichia coli in the Urine Samples from Korean Women with Acute Uncomplicated Cystitis

    To clarify the characteristics of the virulence factors (VFs) of ciprofloxacin resistant Escherichia coli (CFRE) with acute uncomplicated cystitis (AUC), we determined the VFs and the phylogenetic background of all 54 CFRE strains and the 55 randomly selected ciprofloxacin sensitive E. coli strains (CFSE) from patients with AUC in 22 Korean hospitals. The prevalence of the VFs was as follows: fimA, papEF, papGIII, sfaI, dafaBC, cnf1, and hlyA were presented in 96%, 54%, 68%, 91%, 49%, 72%, and 29% of the samples, respectively. The expressions of papEF, cnf1, and hlyA were significantly more prevalent in the CFSE. Moreover, the expressions of cnf, and papEF significantly reduced the risk of ciprofloxacin resistance. The CFSE was also marginally associated with the group B2 (P=0.05). Although the presence of pyuria and a previous cystitis history were not related with the phylotyping and the expressions of VFs, group B2, and fimA and papEF were more expressed in the younger age patients (P<0.05). In conclusion, the CFRE exhibits a selective loss of VFs and the non-B2 phylotype in Korean AUC patients. The group B2 and the presence of fimA and papEF are associated with a younger age of AUC patients

    Achieving equity in UHC interventions: who is left behind by neglected tropical disease programmes in Cameroon?

    Background: The UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) which pledge to leave no one behind for Universal health coverage (UHC) raise the importance of ensuring equitable health outcomes and healthcare delivery. As Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) affect the most disadvantaged and hard to reach populations, they are considered a litmus test for Universal health coverage. Objective: Here, we assess the challenges of implementing Mass Drug Administrations (MDAs) for schistosomiasis prevention and control, in a context of expanded treatment where both community and school-based distribution were carried out, assessing which groups are missed and developing strategies to enhance equity. Methods: This is a qualitative study applying ethnographic observations, in-depth interviews (109) and focus group discussions (6) with key informants and other community members. Participants included community drug distributors, teachers, health workers, and implementing partners across four schistosomiasis endemic regions in Cameroon. Data collected were analysed thematically. Results: Programme implementation gaps have created circumstances where indigenous farmers (originally from the region) and migrating farmers (not originally from the region known as ‘strangers’ and ‘farm hands’), women of reproductive age and school-aged children are continuously missed in MDA efforts in Cameroon. Key implementation challenges that limit access to MDA within this context include inadequate sensitization campaigns that don’t sufficiently build trust with different groups; limits in CDD training around pregnancy and reproductive health; lack of alignment between distribution and community availability and the exclusion of existing formal and informal governance structures that have established trusting community relationships. Conclusion: Through identifying key populations missed in MDAs within specific contexts, we highlight how social inclusion and equity could be increased within the Cameroonian context. A main recommendation is to strengthen trust at the community level and work with established partnerships and local governance structures that can support sustainable solutions for more equitable MDA campaigns

    Female Genital Schistosomiasis (FGS) in Cameroon: A formative epidemiological and socioeconomic investigation in eleven rural fishing communities

    Background Female Genital Schistosomiasis (FGS) is most often caused by presence of Schistosoma haematobium eggs lodged in the female reproductive tract which results in chronic fibrosis and scarring. In Cameroon, despite high community prevalences of urine-patent S. haematobium infections, FGS has yet to be studied in depth. To shed light on the clinical prevalence and socioeconomic effects of FGS, we undertook a formative community-based epidemiological and qualitative survey. Method A cross sectional multidisciplinary study of 304 girls and women from 11 remote rural fishing communities in Cameroon was undertaken using parasitological sampling, clinical colposcopy, and interviews. The lived experiences of those with FGS were documented using a process of ethnography with participant observation and in-depth interviews. Result Amongst 304 women and girls aged >5 years (Median age: 18; Interquartile range: 9.6–28), 198 females were eligible for FGS testing and 58 adult women were examined by clinical colposcopy. Of these, 34 were positive for FGS (proportion: 58.6%; 95% CI: 45.8–70.4), younger girls showing a higher FGS prevalence, and older women not shedding eggs showing a pattern for cervical lesions from earlier infection. In a subset of women with FGS selected purposively (12/58), in-depth interviews with participant observation revealed out-of-pocket expenditures of up to 500USD related health spending for repeated diagnosis and treatment of gynecological illnesses, and 9 hours daily lost reproductive labour. Psychosocial unrest, loss in social capital, and despair were linked with sub-fertility and persistent vaginal itch. Conclusion With our first formative evidence on prevalence, socioeconomic effects and experiences of FGS amongst women and girls in Cameroon, we have clarified to a new level of detail the deficit in provision of and access to peripheral health services in remote areas of Cameroon. Using this information, there is now strong evidence for national programs and services on women’s health and schistosomiasis to update and revise policies targeted on prevention and management of FGS. We therefore stress the need for regular provision of Praziquantel treatment to adolescent girls and women in S. haematobium endemic areas, alongside better access to tailored diagnostic services that can detect FGS and appropriately triage care at primary health level

    A new Vibrio cholerae sRNA modulates colonization and affects release of outer membrane vesicles

    We discovered a new small non-coding RNA (sRNA) gene, vrrA of Vibrio cholerae O1 strain A1552. A vrrA mutant overproduces OmpA porin, and we demonstrate that the 140 nt VrrA RNA represses ompA translation by base-pairing with the 5′ region of the mRNA. The RNA chaperone Hfq is not stringently required for VrrA action, but expression of the vrrA gene requires the membrane stress sigma factor, σE, suggesting that VrrA acts on ompA in response to periplasmic protein folding stress. We also observed that OmpA levels inversely correlated with the number of outer membrane vesicles (OMVs), and that VrrA increased OMV production comparable to loss of OmpA. VrrA is the first sRNA known to control OMV formation. Moreover, a vrrA mutant showed a fivefold increased ability to colonize the intestines of infant mice as compared with the wild type. There was increased expression of the main colonization factor of V. cholerae, the toxin co-regulated pili, in the vrrA mutant as monitored by immunoblot detection of the TcpA protein. VrrA overproduction caused a distinct reduction in the TcpA protein level. Our findings suggest that VrrA contributes to bacterial fitness in certain stressful environments, and modulates infection of the host intestinal tract
