    Get PDF
In the modern globalised environment, the extended immigrant and refugee crisis is at the centre of the scientific, social, and political debate. Meanwhile, the field of Intercultural Education is of paramount importance for social cohesion as the education system is affected by the aforementioned crisis. Against this complicated backdrop, the double challenge of the promotion of educational inclusion of students with diverse cultural backgrounds and disability should be the focus of attention for teachers and policymakers. The present study examines the issue of inclusion of immigrant and refugee students with disability. It employs the qualitative method of thematic analysis, collecting data through semi-structured interviews with teachers who work in Reception Classes and Typical Classes of Intercultural schools in the Prefecture of Epirus, Greece. The data analysis revealed that the participants highlighted the need for restructuring the Greek education system on two levels: the macro level and the micro level. This study underlines the need for systemic change and cooperation to create an environment without exclusion.  Article visualizations

    Get PDF
Objective: The objective of this article is to explore the role of management control in enhancing the resilience of public hospitals during crises, particularly the Covid-19 pandemic through a literature review. It underscores the growing significance of management control in hospitals, especially in response to rising healthcare costs and the complex challenges of managing institutions that involve stakeholders with diverse, and at times, conflicting objectives.   Theoretical Framework: By examining how hospitals have adapted their management practices to better navigate emergency situations, the article provides a conceptual and theoretical framework to analyze how these practices influence hospital management and resilience.   Method: This article conducts a literature review to examine the role of management control in enhancing the resilience of public hospitals during crises, particularly the Covid-19 pandemic. A comprehensive search for scientific articles was conducted across specialized academic databases, including Scopus, and Google Scholar. The selected articles, published between 1963 and 2021, were filtered based on their relevance to themes such as management control, organizational resilience, and crisis management in hospitals. Based on thematic analysis of selected articles, this research identifies best management practices and proposes a theoretical framework that emphasizes the critical role of agility and structured performance evaluation in strengthening institutional resilience within complex environments.   Results and Discussion: The findings emphasize the need for clear objectives and comprehensive performance evaluation to effectively apply management control concepts in this context. This literature review proposes a framework for studying how hospitals can balance agility and performance during crises, ultimately bolstering their resilience.   Research Implications: The research has both theoretical and practical implications. It broadens the understanding of how management control systems enhance resilience in public hospitals during crises, offering a comprehensive framework integrating agility and performance evaluation.   Originality/Value: This research stands out by integrating management control, organizational agility, and performance evaluation to explore public hospital resilience during crises, especially the Covid-19 pandemic. It offers a comprehensive theoretical framework, unlike previous studies that focus on isolated aspects of crisis management, highlighting adaptive practices and contributing to future crisis-resilience strategies in healthcare

TEACHERS’ BELIEFS ABOUT EFFECTIVE FOREIGN LANGUAGE TEACHING OF STUDENTS WITH INTELLECTUAL DISABILITY IN A GREEK EFL CONTEXT

    Get PDF
Teachers’ beliefs are a central construct in education as they influence their teaching attitude, methods and practices, thus, their exploration becomes particularly important. The aim of the present study is to examine teachers’ beliefs regarding foreign language teaching of students with intellectual disability. The sample consisted of ten English as Foreign Language (EFL) teachers who teach at Greek special/vocational schools in secondary education. Semi-structured interviews were used as a tool for data collection. The research findings suggest a lack of training of EFL teachers regarding specialized foreign language teaching methods for students with intellectual disability. Furthermore, there is a notable lack of training in using digital technology. As a result, further training of EFL teachers in teaching methods and use of digital technology is deemed necessary. The present study is a Postgraduate Thesis in the framework of the Masters’ School Psychology Program and aims to adapt the Modified Taylor Complex Figures Test to a Greek population, more specifically of high school students, seven to 18 years old, while it aims to examine the gender effect at the same time. Initially, this study involved 182 typical developmental students, aged 7 to 18 years (90 girls and 92 boys), primary and secondary education, attending three different Attica-Piraeus schools, one Primary, one High School and one High School. . The following two trials were administered in the context of the present study: the MTCF with the copy condition and the immediate recall condition of a complex memory scheme and four British Ability Scales 3rd Edition (BAS III) scales evaluating the recall of shapes found in specific location within the space. As far as these tools are concerned, the MTCF evaluates direct visual and visuo-spatial memory, while the BAS III evaluates visuo-spatial memory. The results of the study showed that there is no statistically significant effect of gender on the two MTCF conditions, nor on their performance on BAS III. Furthermore, it was proved that there was no statistically significant interaction between gender and education level in the two MTCF conditions, nor in the BAS III immediate recall condition. Finally, the results are analyzed, discussed and linked to the corresponding literature

Genetics of decayed sexual traits in a parasitoid wasp with endosymbiont-induced asexuality.

Trait decay may occur when selective pressures shift, owing to changes in environment or life style, rendering formerly adaptive traits non-functional or even maladaptive. It remains largely unknown if such decay would stem from multiple mutations with small effects or rather involve few loci with major phenotypic effects. Here, we investigate the decay of female sexual traits, and the genetic causes thereof, in a transition from haplodiploid sexual reproduction to endosymbiont-induced asexual reproduction in the parasitoid wasp Asobara japonica. We take advantage of the fact that asexual females cured of their endosymbionts produce sons instead of daughters, and that these sons can be crossed with sexual females. By combining behavioral experiments with crosses designed to introgress alleles from the asexual into the sexual genome, we found that sexual attractiveness, mating, egg fertilization and plastic adjustment of offspring sex ratio (in response to variation in local mate competition) are decayed in asexual A. japonica females. Furthermore, introgression experiments revealed that the propensity for cured asexual females to produce only sons (because of decayed sexual attractiveness, mating behavior and/or egg fertilization) is likely caused by recessive genetic effects at a single locus. Recessive effects were also found to cause decay of plastic sex-ratio adjustment under variable levels of local mate competition. Our results suggest that few recessive mutations drive decay of female sexual traits, at least in asexual species deriving from haplodiploid sexual ancestors
