Constraints of mixing angles from neutrino oscillation experiments and neutrinoless double beta decay

    Get PDF
From the analyses of the recent data of neutrino oscillation experiments (especially the CHOOZ and the Super KAMIOKANDE experiments), we discuss how these data affect the neutrinoless double beta decay ((ββ)0ν(\beta \beta)_{0\nu}) rate and vice versa assuming that neutrinos are Majorana particles. For the case that m1m2m3m_1 \sim m_2 \ll m_3 (mim_i are neutrino masses), we obtain, from the data of the CHOOZ and Super KAMIOKANDE, 0.28sin2θ230.760.28 \le \sin^2\theta_{23} \le 0.76 and sin2θ130.05\sin^2\theta_{13} \le 0.05. Combining the latter constraint with the analysis of the "averaged" neutrino mass () appeared in (ββ)0ν(\beta \beta)_{0\nu}, we find that (\frac{-m_2}{m_3-m_2}<\sin^2 \theta_{13} \le 0.05), which leads to the constraint on () as ( \le 0.05 m_3+(1-0.05)m_2). For the case that m1m2m3m_1 \ll m_2 \sim m_3, we find that the data of neutrino oscillation experiments and(ββ)0ν(\beta \beta)_{0\nu} imply the constraints of mixing angles.Comment: 12pp, LaTeX, 6 Figure

<Original>ESCA Study on Improvements in Adhesive Ability of Dental Adhesive Resin to Ni-Cr Alloy Treated by HNO_3 Solution

The adhesive ability of dental adhesive resin (4-META/MMA-TBB) to Ni-Cr alloy improves remarkably when the alloy surface is treated by cone. HNO_3 solution. Both as -polished and cone. HNO_3 treated alloy surfaces were analyzed by Electron Spectroscopy for Chemical Analysis (ESCA) to explain the superior adhesive ability of the alloy surface treated with HNO_3. The surface of the HNO_3 treated specimen contains 25 at % Cr and 13% Ni and the as -polished specimen contains 17% Cr and 21% Ni. It shows that Cr, which has a good chemical affinjty for 4-META resin, is concentrated on the alloy surface. The Q lg spectra can be separated into three components: Component I is due to oxygen bonded with chromium in the passive film, Cr-OCr; II is due to oxygen bonded with both chromium and hydrogen in the passive film, Cr-OH ・ ・ ・ OH_2; and III is due to oxygen in physisorbed water molecules on the passive film. The area fractions are in the order II>I>III for the as-polished surface and I>II>III for the HNO_3 treated surface, indicating that a firm passive structure is formed on the surface treated by HNO_3 solution. This is the cause of the increase in the adhesive ability of the 4-META resin on the passive film

Fractional S^z excitation and its bound state around the 1/3 plateau of the S=1/2 Ising-like zigzag XXZ chain

We present the microscopic view for the excitations around the 1/3 plateau state of the Ising-like zigzag XXZ chain. We analyze the low-energy excitations around the plateau with the degenerating perturbation theory from the Ising limit, combined with the Bethe-form wave function. We then find that the domain-wall particles carrying Sz=±1/3S^z=\pm 1/3 and its bound state of Sz=±2/3S^z=\pm 2/3 describe well the low-energy excitations around the 1/3 plateau state. The formation of the bound state of the domain-walls clearly provides the microscopic mechanism of the cusp singularities and the even-odd behavior in the magnetization curve.Comment: 13 pages, 15 figure

Antiferromagnetic Zigzag Spin Chain in Magnetic Fields at Finite Temperatures

We study thermodynamic behaviors of the antiferromagnetic zigzag spin chain in magnetic fields, using the density-matrix renormalization group method for the quantum transfer matrix. We focus on the thermodynamics of the system near the critical fields in the ground-state magnetization process(MM-HH curve): the saturation field, the lower critical field associated with excitation gap, and the field at the middle-field cusp singularity. We calculate magnetization, susceptibility and specific heat of the zigzag chain in magnetic fields at finite temperatures, and then discuss how the calculated quantities reflect the low-lying excitations of the system related with the critical behaviors in the MM-HH curve.Comment: accepted for publication in Physical Review

Rapid resolution of femoral head osteonecrosis after rotational acetabular osteotomy

    Get PDF
The natural history of osteonecrosis of the femoral head is generally thought to be one of progressive deterioration if no intervention is undertaken. However, it is unknown whether surgical intervention is beneficial for patients with a small region of osteonecrosis. We observed rapid improvement of MRI findings after rotational acetabular osteotomy (RAO) was performed in a young patient with osteonecrosis of the femoral head. The band-like low signal area on T2-weighted images almost resolved by six months after surgery. He returned to work as an electrician by six months after surgery. Early surgical intervention such as RAO that alters the mechanical force acting on the necrotic region of the femoral head may accelerate the recovery of osteonecrosis and the improvement of symptoms
