    Recent progress in extrusion 3D bioprinting of hydrogel biomaterials for tissue regeneration: a comprehensive review with a focus on advanced fabrication techniques

    Over the last decade, 3D bioprinting has received immense attention from research communities for developing functional tissues. Thanks to the complexity of tissues, various bioprinting methods are exploited to figure out the challenges of tissue fabrication, in which hydrogels are widely adopted as a bioink in cell printing technologies based on the extrusion principle. Thus far, there is a wealth of the literature proposing the crucial parameters of extrusion-based bioprinting of hydrogel biomaterials (e.g., hydrogel properties, printing conditions, and tissue scaffold design) toward enhancing performance. Despite the growing research in this field, numerous challenges that hinder advanced applications still exist. Herein, the most recently reported hydrogel-based bioprinted scaffolds, i.e., skin, bone, cartilage, vascular, neural, and muscular (including skeletal, cardiac, and smooth), are systematically discussed with an emphasis on the advanced fabrication techniques from tissue engineering perspective. Methods covered include the multiple-dispenser, coaxial, and hybrid 3D bioprinting. The present work is a unique study to figure out the opportunities of the novel techniques to fabricate complicated constructs with structural and functional heterogeneity. Finally, the principal challenges of current studies and a vision of future research are presented

    Acceleration of wound healing in rats by modified lignocellulose based sponge containing pentoxifylline loaded lecithin/chitosan nanoparticles

    Dressing wounds accelerates the re-epithelialization process and changes the inflammatory environment towards healing. In the current study, a lignocellulose sponge containing pentoxifylline (PTX)-loaded lecithin/chitosan nanoparticles (LCNs) was developed to enhance the wound healing rate. Lecithin/chitosan nanoparticles were obtained by the solvent-injection method and characterized in terms of morphology, particle size distribution, and zeta potential. The lignocellulose hydrogels were functionalized through oxidation/amination and freeze-dried to obtain sponges. The prepared sponge was then loaded with LCNs/PTX to control drug release. The nanoparticle containing sponges were characterized using FTIR and SEM analysis. The drug release study from both nanoparticles and sponges was performed in PBS at 37 °C at different time points. The results demonstrated that PTX has sustained release from lignocellulose hydrogels. The wound healing was examined using a standard rat model. The results exhibited that PTX loaded hydrogels could achieve significantly accelerated and enhanced healing compared to the drug free hydrogels and the normal saline treatment. Histological examination of the healed skin confirmed the visual observations. Overall speaking, the in vivo assessment of the developed sponge asserts its suitability as wound dressing for treatment of chronic skin wounds

    Life table parameters and digestive enzymes activity of Helicoverpa armigera (Lep.: Noctuidae) on different tomato cultivars

    The tomato fruit borer, Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner), is a destructive insect pest of many host crops in Iran and worldwide. The effect of different tomato cultivars (SUN 6108 f1, Rio grande UG, Korral, CH falat, Hed rio grande and Cal JN3) was studied on life table parameters of H. armigera under laboratory (25 ± 1 °C, 65 ± 5% RH and a photoperiod of 16: 8 (L: D) hours), and on the activity of some digestive enzymes of its sixth larval instars under field conditions. The larval period was longest on Hed rio grande (35.500 ± 1.340 days) and shortest on Korral (24.290 ± 0.688 days). The intrinsic rate of increase (rm) ranged from 0.094 ± 0.003 to 0.159 ± 0.002 (day-1), which was lowest on Rio grande UG and highest on Korral. The larvae reared on the leaves of SUN 6108 f1 showed the highest amylolytic activity (0.062 ± 0.00004 mU mg-1), whereas the lowest activity was in the larvae fed on the leaves of Cal JN3 (0.027 ± 0.00004 mU mg-1) and Korral (0.027 ± 0.0001 mU mg-1). The amylolytic activity of larvae fed on the fruits of tomato cultivars was highest on Cal JN3 (0.047 ± 0.0001 mU mg-1). Also, the highest general proteolytic activity of H. armigera was in the larvae reared on the leaves of Hed rio grande (3.235 ± 0.004 U mg-1) and fruits of Rio grande UG (2.757 ± 0.135 U mg-1). It could be concluded that Rio grande UG is unsuitable host for the growth and development of H. armigera

    Role of efflux pump inhibitor in decreasing antibiotic cross-resistance of Pseudomonas aeruginosa in a burn hospital in Iran

    Introduction: Multidrug resistance in Pseudomonas aeruginosa may be due to efflux pump overexpression. This study phenotypically examined the role of efflux pump inhibitors in decreasing antibiotic cross-resistance between beta-lactams, fluoroquinolones, and aminoglycosides in P. aeruginosa isolates from burn patients in Iran. Methodology: A total of 91 phenotypically and genotypically confirmed P. aeruginosa samples were studied. Multidrug cross-resistance was determined using the disk diffusion method and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) test. The contribution of efflux pumps was determined by investigating MIC reduction assay to markers of beta-lactams, fluoroquinolones, and aminoglycosides in the absence and presence of an efflux pump inhibitor. All the isolates were also tested by polymerase chain reaction for the presence of mexA, mexC, and mexE efflux genes. Results: Of the isolates, 81 (89) and 83 (91.2) were multidrug resistant according to the disk diffusion and MIC method, respectively. Cross-resistance was observed in 67 (73.6) and 68 (74.7) of isolates according to the disk diffusion and MIC method, respectively. In the presence of the efflux pump inhibitor, twofold or higher MIC reduction to imipenem, cefepime, ciprofloxacin, and gentamicin was observed in 59, 65, 55, and 60 isolates, respectively. Except for two isolates that were negative for mexC, all isolates were positive for mexA, mexC, and mexE genes simultaneously. Conclusion: Efflux pumps could cause different levels of resistance based on their expression in clinical isolates. Early detection of different efflux pumps in P. aeruginosa could allow the use of other antibiotics and efflux pump inhibitors in combination with antibiotic therapy. © 2016 Talebi-Taher et al

    Diagnostic Performance of 64-Channel Multislice Computed Tomography in Assessment of Significant Coronary Artery Disease in Symptomatic Subjects

    The recent development of 64-channel multislice computed tomography (MSCT) has resulted in noninvasive coronary artery imaging improvement. This study was conducted to determine the accuracy of 64-slice MSCT in a relatively unselected group of 143 patients with presentations suggestive of coronary artery disease, including those with unstable angina pectoris, who underwent both coronary computed tomographic angiography and invasive coronary angiography. No arrhythmia was considered an exclusion criterion except for atrial fibrillation or frequent extrasystoles. In patients with fast heart rates, a β blocker was administered orally. Data were obtained using electrocardiography gated 64-slice MSCT. Computed tomographic angiography and invasive coronary angiography findings of each coronary segment were compared to determine the sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value of MSCT in the detection of their normalcy or insignificant (<50 diameter decrease) stenosis versus significant (�50 diameter decrease) stenosis or total occlusion. In per-patient assessment, the calculated sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value of MSCT were 96, 67, 91, and 83, respectively. These values in per-artery evaluation were 94, 94, 87, and 97, and corresponding values in per-segment analysis were 92, 97, 77, and 99, respectively. In conclusion, computed tomographic angiography has high diagnostic performance in the assessment of significant coronary artery disease in most patients in a daily routine practice, including those presenting with unstable angina pectoris symptoms. © 2007 Elsevier Inc.     Identification of New Alleles and the Determination of Alleles and Genotypes Frequencies at the CYP2D6 Gene in Emiratis

    CYP2D6 belongs to the cytochrome P450 superfamily of enzymes and plays an important role in the metabolism of 20–25% of clinically used drugs including antidepressants. It displays inter-individual and inter-ethnic variability in activity ranging from complete absence to excessive activity which causes adverse drug reactions and toxicity or therapy failure even at normal drug doses. This variability is due to genetic polymorphisms which form poor, intermediate, extensive or ultrarapid metaboliser phenotypes. This study aimed to determine CYP2D6 alleles and their frequencies in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) local population. CYP2D6 alleles and genotypes were determined by direct DNA sequencing in 151 Emiratis with the majority being psychiatric patients on antidepressants. Several new alleles have been identified and in total we identified seventeen alleles and 49 genotypes. CYP2D6*1 (wild type) and CYP2D6*2 alleles (extensive metaboliser phenotype) were found with frequencies of 39.1% and 12.2%, respectively. CYP2D6*41 (intermediate metaboliser) occurred in 15.2%. Homozygous CYP2D6*4 allele (poor metaboliser) was found with a frequency of 2% while homozygous and heterozygous CYP2D6*4 occurred with a frequency of 9%. CYP2D6*2xn, caused by gene duplication (ultrarapid metaboliser) had a frequency of 4.3%. CYP2D6 gene duplication/multiduplication occurred in 16% but only 11.2% who carried more than 2 active functional alleles were considered ultrarapid metabolisers. CYP2D6 gene deletion in one copy occurred in 7.5% of the study group. In conclusion, CYP2D6 gene locus is heterogeneous in the UAE national population and no significant differences have been identified between the psychiatric patients and controls
